Alexander Barnhill , son of John Barnhill and Unknown , was born in 1784 in New Hanover County, NC, died in 1846-1849 in Bladen County, NC, at age 62, and was buried in Bladen County, NC.

General Notes:

1800 Federal Census - New Hanover county, NC.
Alexander,16 years of age, appears with his parents and siblings.

1803 Nov. 14 - Alexander applied for a land grant of 200 acres on the east side of Black River - Did not find anything to substantiate his getting grant, but he did live near the Black River in the area known as "Frenches Creek" with his family. Later deed records do indicate that he must have owned a very large acreage of land during his lifetime.

Alexander and Darkis are believed to have married prior to 1808 in New Hanover County, NC.

After their marriage, they lived in New Hanover County for twenty plus (20+) years prior to moving into Bladen County, which took place prior to the census taken in 1830.

1812 War
Alexander served as a soldier with the New Hanover Regiment (Nixon's) in the War of 1812. He was inducted as a Private and discharged as a Private.
(Roll Box 11, Roll Exc 602).

1830 Federal Census - Bladen County, NC (Northeast side of Cape Fear River).
Alexander and Darkis are living in French Creek, Bladen County, NC with their children.
The records indicate the following:
1 male and 1 female between the ages of 40 - 50
2 males and 1 female under the age of 5
1 male between the age of 5 - 10
2 males and 2 females between the ages of 10 - 15
2 males and 1 female between the ages of 15 - 20
1 female between the age of 20 - 30

1840 Federal Census - Alexander appears with his wife and children in Bladen County, NC (area known then as French Creek - now known as Kelly, NC).
1 male and female between the ages of 50 - 60
1 male between 5 - 10
2 males and 2 females between 10 - 20
2 males between 15 - 20
3 females between 20 - 30

2 children have left home and married.

1844 July 18 - Alexander Barnhill for the love and natural affection I have for my grandchildren, the heirs of Louis Boswell, living with him, namely: Mary Eliza, Thomas, Carrissa, Susannah Rebecca,, William Alexander, Elizabeth Ann and any that his present wife Mary Jane Boswell may have, legal heirs of said Louis Boswell - 150 acres where he now lives & all the cattle...Wit: Enoch Hawes, Thomas Barnhill. 1846 Bladen County Deed Book #8 (558) Alexander Barnhill to Hulin G. Barnhill $325.00 - 200 acres on E side of Colly Swamp & another tract lying between Colly and Black River...adj lands of Alexander Barnhill. Wit: Enoch Hawes, R. P. DeVane. March Term 1846. Jno. M. Dech. JSCL&E.

It appears that Alexander and Darkis died after 1846 and prior to 1850. It is not known where they are buried, but they are believed to be buried in Bladen County, in the Haw Bluff area where they lived.

Alexander and Darkis were the parents of 11 known children, possibly 12, according to information in the census records. The 1830 census shows 7 malesand 5 females plus the parents. Another son is thought to possibly be Robert H. Barnhill, who moved to the Lincoln Township area and lived there and in Long Creek after his marriage to Elizabeth Lewis.

Alexander was a farmer.

Alexander married Darkis Phillips about 1807 in New Hanover County, NC. Darkis was born in 1786 in New Hanover County, NC, died after 1840 in Bladen County, NC, and was buried in Bladen County, NC.

Priscilla Barnhill was born in New Hanover County, NC, died in Bladen County, NC, and was buried in NC.

William A. Barnhill was born in 1811 in New Hanover County, NC, died in Bladen County, NC, and was buried in Bladen County, NC.

Hulen G. Barnhill was born on 10 Oct 1812 in New Hanover County, NC, died on 16 Mar 1872 in Bladen County, NC, at age 59, and was buried in Mar 1872 in Haw Bluff Church Cem., Kelly, Bladen County, NC.

Thomas Haywood Barnhill was born on 17 Aug 1812 in New Hanover County, NC, died on 27 Nov 1898 in Bladen County, NC, at age 86, and was buried in Nov 1898 in Haw Bluff Church Cem., Kelly, Bladen County, NC.
