Some emigrants arrived by boat, but most came by wagon train on the Oregon Trail, but taking the Whitman Cutoff into Eastern Washington Territory. A few later came by wagon trains following the northern trail on which the railroad to Seattle was later built.
Other settlers came by wagon train to Oregon City, crossed the Columbia River to Fort Vancouver, then north up the current I-5 corridor.
After the Bozeman Trail was safe from Indian attacks, some wagon trains on the Oregon Trail in Wyoming turned north on the Bozeman Trail to join the northern trail, then turned west through Idaho to north-eastern Washington.
One of the first economies besides of farming was timber. Processed timber was barged down the coast to markets as far south as San Diego.
