The Secretary of State has developed a web page that contains copies of early Vital Records and Washington Territorial Census for 1857-1892, 1872-1888.

Washington State Library "Ask a Librarian" program allows the library staff to conduct up to one hour of basic research. Such research includes: searching death dates, obituaries, city directories and other tasks related to the history and genealogy of Washington State. Please be specific with your requests.

This Library was the first American library north of the Columbia River. The Washington State Library was established by the Organic Act of the Territory of Washington passed on March 2, 1853

The State Library holds over 40,000 rolls of microfilm for Washington newspapers from the territorial period in the 1850s to the present. Most newspapers microfilms are available for interlibrary loan through your local library.

Currently, nine microfilm reader/printers are available on site. Because we do loan microfilm, not every reel is available for in-library use every day. Please check our online catalog or call the Library (phone number above) for information. Online catalogue

Federal Census Records for the State of Washington are available for the following years: 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, & 1930

Federal Mortality Schedules are available for 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880

Union Veteran and Widows Census available for 1890.

Washington State Vital Records are at the following Locations:
Birth and Death Reocrds at State Department of Health, Center for Health Statistics since 1907. Records prior to that are in the offices of the County auditors, and usually go back to 1891. City Health departments in Seattle, Spokane, Bellingham, and Tacoma also have birth and death records.
