1897 CENSUS
EVERETT, WASHINGTON
INTRODUCTION

Leonard Gurian
All too often, original documents stored at courthouses and other repositories seem to vanish into thin air. In a housekeeping frenzy, perhaps, those priceless documents were examined ("Who needs all this old stuff? No one ever uses it anyway!") and consigned to the trash bin. Decades later, researchers long for those documents, knowing that the information they contained might well provide "brick wall busters", or at the least, a clue or two that would move their research forward.

In 1897, a census was taken in the City of Everett. Names, addresses and city wards were included, and the enumerator asked how long the individual had lived in Everett. No "personal" information was collected, although occasionally an occupation was included. The census pages were stored in a municipal building, and somehow escaped the above-mentioned Housekeeping Frenzy.

Decades later, the census pages resurfaced, and the late Leonard Gurian recognized the value of the document, and transcribed the entire census for the Northwest Room of the Everett Public Library.  All Family Historians (even those without roots in "The City of Smokestacks") owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Gurian for helping to preserve this priceless document and to the Northwest Room for allowing SIGS to upload the census  transcription to the SIGS web site.

Included in the 1897 Everett Census Project is a map of the City, showing the 6 wards that made up the City of Everett in 1897. This map is included at the top of each census data page.
