The logic for the explanation of this suggestion for the origin of the Duell/Wells family name is trilingual and convoluted. The Rivest index of Berthier marriages indexes the beginning marriage as that of Laurent Hern [sic] to Marguerite Gauthier, but the parentage makes it clear that Rivest misread a beginning "St" as an "H", which is frequently done.

In German, the word "Stern" means "star". Translated into French, it would be "etoile". Since the most famous star in history was the Star of Bethlehem, almost inevitably this became "Etoile dit Noel". When the French name was bastardized into English, it was mispronounced as Doile or Doualle and the dit of Noel also turned into Denoel. As emphasis was placed on the final syllable, it was anglicized not only into Newell, but also into Wells.

I believe that the Duell/Duel spelling may be the result of the fact that there was early in Isle la Motte and Alburgh, Vt., a Duel family which seems to have been English in origin and to have borne no relation whatsoever to the family that follows. However, its existence made the name familiar to local people.

Information received from Dale Burnett on 4 April 1994 indicates that his branch of the family had retained an oral tradition of the name change from Stern, but thought it was spelled Stearns.

---------------------------------------------------------

1. Jean/Johann Stern/Stirn/Stiern, m. 1783 at Repentigny to Marguerite Grenon. This couple did not settle in Vermont, but at least two of their sons did.

1.1 Lawrence Wells/Dual, Dewell, born in Germany. m. Margaret Gokey, b. in France (sic). Also referred to as Lorent Douelle/Douele m. to Marguerite Gauthier. She was b. c. 1798/1802, Canada. Margaret Deuel, age 68, b. Canada, 1870 census, North Hero, Vt., in household of Joseph and Margaret (Deuell) Young; Margaret Wells, 82, mother, 1880 census in household of Laurence Wells. Margaret Dewells, b. Canada--d. 20 March 1883, North Hero, Vt. No age or parents given in the Vital Records. Margret, wife of Lawrence Duell, d. 4 March 1883, age 85 years. Buried St. Amadeus Cemetery, Alburgh, Vt. She may POSSIBLY have been the Margaret "Cole", age 60, born Vt., with Angeline Young, age 7, born Vt., in her household, on the 1860 census, North Hero, Vt.

At their marriage, Laurent Stern and Marguerite Gauthier recognized as legitimate their son Charles, baptized the 4th of August of the year past. He had been baptized as a legitimate child (see below), so there may possibly have been an earlier civil or Protestant marriage ceremony. Witnesses to the marriage were Amable Stern, brother; Louis Gamache pere; Jean-Baptiste Manuel; Jean-Baptiste Archambault.

Much of the following information pertaining to this family is guesswork based on evidence located, and is so designated by the use of question marks.

1.1.1 Charles Douelle/Doualle. Baptized 4 August 1825, Berthier, Charles, born yesterday of the legitimate marriage of Laurent Stern, cultivator, and of Marguerite Gauthier. Godparents Charles Germain and Marianne Mongle.

Charles Wells, age 76 years 11 months 20 days, b. Canada, son of Lawrence Wells and Marguerite Gauthier, died 12 July 1895, Swanton, Vt.

Mentioned as Joseph/Charles Duel married to Lydia _____. m. (1) as a minor, 30 June 1845, St. Joseph's, Corbeau, Coopersville, Clinton Co., N.Y., Adelaide Baltasard dit St. Martin, dau. of Joseph Baltasard dit St. Martin and Ange/Desanges Hall. Witnesses Joseph Balthazard, Laurent Douelle, Aimable Douell, Andre Meree, Joseph Baltazard, Emerie Baltazard.

According to Dale Burnett, Joseph Balthazar and Marie Desanges hall were married 24 April 1826; he son of Louis Balthazar and Marie Beleau; she daughter of Andre Hall and Marie Archange Valentin.

m. (2) by 1860, Rosella LaDuc/LaDuke, b.c. 1842/43, N.Y. or Canada.

POSSIBLY the Charles Duell, age 27, resident of Champlain, naturalized 23 October 1852, Clinton Co., N.Y.

Probably the same man as Charles Wells/Duell/

Duwel/Dehoel m. to Mary _____. His wife died c. 1855.

On the 1860 census, Dickinson, Franklin Co., N.Y., we find Charles Duell, age 37, male, farmer, born Vermont; Rosella, 17, born New York; Mary, ll, born Vermont; Charles, 10, born Vermont, and Lydia, 8, born Vermont.

This man has not been located on the 1850 or 1870 census. He reappears on the 1880 census of Alburgh, Vt., as Charles Wells, 60, laborer, born Canada, with a wife Rosella, 38, born Canada, and children: Frank, age 18; Ellen, age 15; Flora, age 13; Napoleon, age 12; Josephine, age 9; Angelina, age 8, George, age 6; William, age 3, and Julian, age 1.

1.1.1.1 Charles Douel, bap. 31 August 1846, St. Joseph's, Coopersville, N.Y., born the 30th. Godparents Laurent Douel and desAnges Hales. Possibly the same as Charles Wells, b. c. 1851, brother of Mary E. Duel, #1.1.1.2 below. However, it is possible that the child born in 1846 died as a child and that Mary's brother "Charles" was born c. 1850/51, baptized as Guillaume and later called by the name of Charles.

1.1.1.2 Mary E. Duel/Wells/Noel/Larock/Duell/

Duwel, b. c. 1848/50. She stated that she was born 18 July 1846, St. Albans, Vt. and that her mother died when she was nine years old. The baptism as located by Albert Smith in the records of St. Mary's/Immaculate Conception, St. Albans, Vt., reads: Reg. I, f. 41, no. 295, baptized 20 August 1848, Maria Duel, born 18 July, dau. of Charles Duel and Adelaide Beltassore. Godparents: Jeufireum Mignolt(?) and Margt. Gageu.

At age 17, m. (1) July 1865, Grand Isle, Vt., Joseph Rock/LaRock/Durock, 16, b. Canada, son of Joseph Rock. Other records give his birthdate as c. 1842/45/50/51, Canada. 1870 census, Alburgh, Vt. as Joseph Durock.

Joseph Rock may have been a brother of Rose Roc, wife of Francois Beaumartin/Frank Burta. If so, he was on the census with their household in 1860, Isle la Motte, Vt. He abandoned his wife at Alburgh, N.Y. or Vt., c. 1877. She had an aunt Sarah Vaundel in Lawrenceville, N.Y. in 1879. In the 1880 census, Joseph LaRock, age 38, and Sarah LaRock, 14, are at North Hero, Vt., working as servants of George Tudhope. The three youngest sons are on the 1880 census of Alburgh, Vt., paupers, with Robert Hislop their keeper. William had apparently died by this time. Mary Rock, age 30, and son Rodrick, age 1, are in the household of Dexter B. Town at North Hero, Vt., where she is working as a servant.

She m. Cf. Civil War pension file of Eli Brown, which indicates that this second marriage may not have been legally valid.

1.1.1.2.1 Sara Jane Rock/Durock/LaRock, b. 25 April 1866 Grand Isle, Vt., bap. 8 April 1867, born 25 November, St. Rose de Lima, South Hero, Vt. Godparents Charles DeHoel/DeNoel and Sara Denoel/Dehoel.
