TROMP (TREMPE) FAMILY

TROMP (TREMPE) FAMILY

It would be of particular interest to identify the origins of this family because of the existence of the place name "Tromp's Point" in Grand Isle County, Vt. However, so far even advertisements placed in the Memoires de la Societe Genealogique Canadienne-Francaise have failed to elicit an identification of the marriage.

1. Francis Tromp, b. c. 1761-1764. m. Margaret _____, b. c. 1788-94. Mr. Tramp had children in school 1843, Grand Isle, Vt.: Elizabeth, Joseph, and Joseph Patnow; later Francis and Margaret Tromp were listed with Joseph Tromp or Gardner, Joseph Tromp or Patnode. 1840 census, 1860 census, Grand Isle, Vt.

He is probably found on the 1830 census, Champlain Township, Clinton Co., N.Y., with the following family members:

1 male 10-15

1 male 50-60

1 female under 5

1 female 10-15

1 female 30-40

These were probably the same people as Francois Trempe and his wife Marguerite Germain, parents of Henriette Trempe, the first wife of Leon Patnode. For her descendents, see under the Patnode family. Henriette Trempe was born after 1804, married in 1825, and died in 1837.Her name in the Canadian registers was sometimes spelled as Trahan.

Old Man Francis Tromp, about 105 years, birthplace supposed to be Canada, died January 1866, Grand Isle, Vt. The 1860 census, Grand Isle, he was listed as age 97, born Canada; she age 72, born Canada. 1870 census, Grand Isle, she age 76, born Canada; 1880 census, Grand Isle, she age 87, born Canada.

On 4 October 1847, St. Joseph's Corbeau, Coopersville, Clinton Co., N.Y., Francois Trempe witnessed the marriage of Joseph Pontbriand (son of Eustache Pontbriand and Felicite Vandal) to Angelle Lepine, daughter of Antoine Lepine and Marguerite Belisle dit Germain.

Also in Grand Isle Co. was Narcisse Trempe/Trean/Trahan married to Veronique Robillard. Narcisse Trean, husband of Veronique Robillard, age 37 years, d. 4 and was buried 6 January 1856, St. John the Baptist, Keeseville, N.Y.

Their daughter, Elizabeth Trempe, born 28 April 1851, was baptized 29 April 1851, St. Joseph's, Burlington, Vt. Godparents were Pierre Robillard and Therese Billele(?).

Their son, Gedeon Trahan, legitimate son of Narcisse Trahan and Veronique Robillard of Grande Isle, baptized 16 August 1853, St. Peter's, Plattsburgh, N.Y. Godparents: Gedeon Audet and Magdeleine Robillard.

A possible clue to the connection between the two families, but not the marriage of Francois and Marguerite, is:

Antoine Piette-Trempe (Joseph Piette Trempe and Charlotte Dupuis) of Maskinonge

4 April 1811, Berthier

Marie-Archange Germain-Belisle (Charles-David Germain-Belisle and Marie-Archange Neveu)

Bonjour !

Yes, this text, the data in it and this family was and still is a brickwall in my research.

Although I am quite sure Francis is a son of Joseph and Charlotte Dupuis, I really can't make the connection. Age of Francis children would match the marriage date of 1811. But his age in census and at death does not match the birthdate of 1778 I have, unless there was a consistent error of 10 years in his age count.

Also, I wonder if some descendants have changed the name to Tromp, Thahan or whatever. I still have to find descendants.

Your 300 page text seems to be interesting. Although I don't record data on collateral lines, I may find in it some information I can make good use of in all families I am working on. If you can zip it in some way, I would be happy to receive it and peruse through this information.

Best regards

Jacques Trempe
