The relationship between the Savage/Sauvage families of Clinton Co., N.Y. and the Savage families of Grand Isle Co., Vt. is not yet totally clear. The following information may provide some clues.

There was a PIERRE Sauvage (son of Gilles Sauvage and Marie Leblanc) who married 21 September 1750, Longue-Pointe, Montreal, Marie-Josephte Pepin (dau. of the late Jacques Pepin and Elisabeth Dufresne). Pierre m. (2), age 36, 16 July 1764, Notre-Dame-de-Montreal, Marie-Agathe Vallieres, age 36, (the late Pierre and Marguerite Gabory), widow of Jean Carre.

A JEAN-BAPTISTE Sauvage m. 23 November 1782, Chambly, Marie-Anne Robert (dau. of Joseph Robert and Madeleine Bourdon). This is one of those cases where dependence on the published repertoire leads to error. The Chambly repertoire identified this man as widower of Marie-Josette Pepin, but consultation of the original registers indicates that he was SON of Pierre Sauvage and the LATE Marie-Josette Pepin of the city and parish of Montreal. Witnesses to his marriage were his father Pierre Sauvage and his brother Pierre Sauvage. They had several children baptized at St-Mathias-

sur-Richelieu.

JOSEPH Sauvage (Pierre Sauvage and Marie-Josephte Pepin) m. 27 November 1791, Chambly, Marguerite Rocheleau (dau. of Antoine Rocheleau and Marie Dubord). He had many children who married at Chambly.

1. Thomas Sauvage/Lesauvage m. Marguerite Marney dit Richelieu. According to family traditions in papers provided to this compiler by Mr. John Bilow of Plattsburgh, N.Y., he was said to be French or from the Island of Guernsey, to have come with Lafayette and have served in the Revolution, and to have changed his name to Sauvage from Gardiner or LeIndien. The validity of any or all of the above is questionable. Thomas Savage d. 30 December 1817 in Plattsburgh, N.Y., "has left a family of 10 children" Plattsburgh Republican, 3 January 1818 (Bowman, Vital Statistics of Eastern New York).

Thomas Savage/Lesauvage/Sauvage married Marguerite Marney dit Richelieu, dau. of Louis Marney dit Richelieu, a French-Canadian soldier of the American Revolution settled in the Refugee Tract at Chazy, Clinton Co., N.Y., and later living nearer to Champlain.
