COOTWARE, COOTWIRE (COURTOIS) FAMILY

COOTWARE, COOTWIRE (COURTOIS) FAMILY

1. Charles Cootware, b. c. 1786, France, is in the 1820 census, South Hero, Vt., with 2 children. He had three children in school, 1825-26, South Hero, Vt., and appears in the 1830 census, South Hero, Vt. He had moved to Plattsburgh, N.Y., by 1840; the family, however, continued to have many connections to the Lake Champlain islands and several of his descendents returned and resided there.

His obituary appeared in the St. Albans Vt. "Weekly Messenger", 12 February 1875.His death had been noticed the previous week.

He married Mary Ann Lajeunesse, daughter of Louis Lajeunesse, b. c. 1796/99, Canada. The marriage of her parents is:

Louis Lajeunesse (Antoine Lajeunesse and Marguerite Riendeau) of Chambly

m. 8 April 1799, St-Mathias-sur-Richelieu

Marie-Anne Benjamin (Joseph Benjamin dit St-Aubinand Marie-Anne Leblanc)

For additional information on her parents, see "Young (Lajeunesse) Family" in this compilation.

The 1840 census, Plattsburgh Village, New York, lists him as a "War Pensioner". These records can be found under Index, Pension Application Files, War of 1812, Death or Disability, the National Archives "Old War" Invalid, File No. 28435 under the name of Charles Cortwite, 1812, Grade Private, Service Cap. Little--4th U.S. Rifles, Bundle No. 23, Can No. 136.

He and his wife had eleven children, nine of whom were living in 1846. He is on the 1850 census, Plattsburgh, as Charles Corduor; 1860 census, Village of Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., N.Y. as Charles Coutware; 1870 census, Plattsburgh, as Charles Courtwright.

According to the obituary, Charles Cootware was born in 1779 in Belle Isle, France. (It would probably be worthwhile to check out Milton P. Rieder, Jr., The Acadians in France, Vol. II, Belle-Isle-en-Mer Registers.) However, Beloeil, Quebec, is also a possibility.

At age 14, he enlisted in the French service under Napoleon. In 1808, he was taken prisoner by the British near Cadiz, Spain, and joined a British regiment which spent five years on Malta. His regiment was then sent to Canada. He deserted in 1813 and came to Burlington, Vt., where he enlisted in the U.S. dragoons. He served in nearly all the battles on the northern frontier until he lost a leg at Lake Erie in 1814.

For additional information on him and on his wife's family, see the affidavit he executed in 1846, located in the U.S. National Archives, Revolutionary War Pension Files (microfilm series M804), in the fils of Prudent LaJenness (His wife's great-uncle).
