1820 Census

The fourth census of the United States was taken in 1820. This census gathered considerably more data than previous years. Thirty three information fields were recorded.

Fields collected and shown below: 1)Name of heads of families; 2) Free white males under 10 years; 3) Free white males of 10 and under 16; 4) Free white males between 16 and 18; 5) Free white males of 16 and under 26 including heads of families; 6) Free white males of 26 and under 45 including heads of families; 7) Free white males of 45 and upwards including heads of families; 8) Free white females under 10 years; 9) Free white females of 10 and under 16; 10) Free white females of 16 and under 26 including heads of families; 11) Free white females of 26 and under 45 including heads of families; 12) Free white females of 45 and upwards including heads of families; 13) Foreigners not naturalized; 14) Number of persons engaged in Agriculture; 15) Number of persons engaged in Commerce; 16) Number of persons engaged in Manufactures.

Fields not collected and not shown: Fields 17 through 24 collected information on slaves. 17) Males under 14; 18) Males of 14 and under 26; 19) Males of 26 and under 45; 20) Males of 46 and upwards; 21) Females under 14; 22) Females of 14 and under 26; 23) Females of 26 and under 45; 24) Females of 46 and upwards; Fields 25 through 24 collected information on Free Colored Persons. 25) Males under 14; 26) Males of 14 and under 26; 27) Males of 26 and under 45; 28) Males of 46 and upwards; 29) Females under 14; 30) Females of 14 and under 26; 31) Females of 26 and under 45; 32) Females of 46 and upwards; Field 33 gathered data on All other Persons except Indians not taxed.

At the time of the 1820 census, the town of Newark was located in Essex County.
