The Ladies Bedroom occupies the room which would have probably been the Master Bedroom
when the house was lived in. Mrs Dennis the last occupant of the house had the wardrobes installed for her use. They were built in either side of the fireplace during the 1940s. They are very shallow. The clothes were hung on hooks fitted to the back of the cupboard to allow them to fit in. The maid servant manequin is holding a corset over her arm. She would have been preparing to help her mistress dress. Corsets were worn hooked up at the front and then laced up firmly at the back. They were commonly used by women to give them narrow waists which were the fashion of the period. Many women put up with extreeme discomfort in order to look slim and be fashionable. They would even faint while wearing these tight fitting garments. |
