Yohogania, Monongalia, and Ohio Counties were created in 1776 from the District of West Augusta, the western territory of Augusta County, VA that was treated like a separate county. West Augusta was administered from Fort Dunmore, Virginia'a name for what is now Pittsburgh, beginning in 1775. The northern portion of Monongalia County, the northeastern portion of Ohio County, and and all of Yohogania County were also known as Westmoreland County, PA which was a mother to several counties. The area that was the northwest corner of Monongalia became Washington County, PA in 1781, and most of that became Greene County, PA in 1796. The area that was the northeast corner of Monongalia became the southern portion of Fayette County, PA in 1783.

The Darlington Memorial Library Manuscript Collection at the University of Pittsburgh lists the following:

YOHOGANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA. COURTS. Records, 1776-1779. 1 ms. vol. Copy of the original court records, including entries from Dec. 23, 1776 to March 25, 1779. Yohogania County was a Virginia county established in 1774, during the time when the sovereignty issue had not been resolved with Pennsylvania. In 1779 the controversy was settled in Pennsylvanias favor. Yohogania County included parts of these present-day Pennsylvania counties: Allegheny, Westmoreland, Washington, Fayette and Beaver. The original records covering 1776 to 1780 can be found in the Washington County, Pennsylvania, Courthouse. A printed version, edited by Boyd Crumine, appeared under the title Minute book of the Virginia Court held for Yohogania County, first at Augusta town (now Washington, Pa.), and afterwards on the Andrew Heath farm near West Elizabeth, 1776-1780, Annals of the Carnegie Museum, II (1903), 71-140, 205-429.

  These are records of the District of West Augusta, and Ohio and Yohogania Counties, Virginia, from 1775 to 1780, now constituting territory in both southwestern Penna. and W. Va. As a result of the boundary dispute, many Virginia court records of great rarity and importance are today found in Penna. and W. Va. The records transcribed here are filled with important information on the residents of this area.
