Warren County, Virginia has a long genealogy history and was first settled around 1730 and formally established in 1836 from portions of Frederick and Shenandoah counties. Many of the County's early settlers were Scots-Irish and English Quakers who benefited from an abundance of water-based trading routes. Warren got its name from Dr. Joseph Warren, a medical doctor and soldier who served as chief executive of the Massachusetts government during the Revolutionary War. Dr. Warren was credited with sending Paul Revere on his famous ride and he was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Warren's county seat was established at Front Royal, also known by some colonials as "Hell Town," and remains its seat to this day. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of the year 2000, Warren had a total area of 216 square miles, 31,584 residents, 12,087 households and 8,521 families. Area attractions include Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, the Shenandoah River and Skyline Caverns.
