Town of Claremont History
The Town of Claremont was incorporated in 1886. J.
Frank Mancha, a Maryland real estate developer,
created the town and promoted the sale of land in the
town and the Claremont Colony surrounding it. Willie
Allen had inherited the Claremont estate, consisting
of more than 12,000 contiguous acres, after the Civil
War. He moved to New York and left it to be
subdivided and sold by others. Frank Mancha took on
the Claremont development project in 1879. After his
death in 1890, others continued to promote land sales
in the Claremont area. Although Claremont once
boasted three saloons, it never developed into the
metropolis its promoters had envisioned.
