"To commence from the first day of January 1780, at which time possession will be given, the plantation whereon the late Mr. Matthias Marriott formerly lived, lying in Surry County, within one mile of the courthouse and on the head of Gray's Creek... The saw mill with her appurtenances and a 25 hogshead flat for the use of the saw mill will be included in the lease for this plantation..."
Matthias Marriot's sawmill, located at the head of Gray's Creek in Surry County, was probably constructed sometime between 1764 and 1766.
