Beulah Waddell

Obituary from Kingsport Times-News for descendants of Scott Co Ancestors

KINGSPORT — Beulah Waddell, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Oct. 30, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Beulah was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Waddell; her parents, Henry and Monnie Williams Bellamy; sister, Madeline Cloud; and brother, Raymond Bellamy.

She is survived by her son, Pete Horton of Mount Carmel; two sisters, Audrey Puckett of Kingsport and Marjorie Gillentine of Memphis, Tenn. She is further survived by three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Emogene Mottern.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow with Dr. Rob Jones officiating.

Graveside services will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park.

The staff of Oak Hill is honored to serve the family of Beulah Waddell.

KINGSPORT - Charles F. Waddell , died at 6 a.m. Friday (March 30, 2001) at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, Tenn. after a long illness.

He was born in Kingsport and lived his entire life here. He retired from Mason-Dixon Freight Line after 27 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, S.O. and Glenna Waddell ; two brothers, Ronald Waddell and S.O. Waddell Jr.

Surviving are his wife, Beulah F. Waddell , Kingsport; a stepson, L.H. Horton, Mount Carmel; three stepgrandchildren; a sister, Mrs. R. Carl Counts, Kingsport; a brother, Frank Waddell , Baileyton; four nieces and two nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jack Weikel officiating.

Entombment will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Mausoleum. Honorary pallbearers will be Allen Hillman, Dennis Robinson, Edward Waddell , Douglas Cloud, Bobby Elkins and Jerry Parnell.

Wagner Rites Are Set For Wednesday

Funeral services for William Kenneth (Kinnie) Wagner, 55, will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p. m. from the Scott County Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bobbie Olterman and the Rev. Clarence Arnold will officiate. Burial will be in Wood Cemetery. Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Wagner, convicted killer of five persons, died at about 3:45 p. m. Sunday while petting dogs at the prison in Parchman, Miss., where he had been confined.

Officials said the native of Scott County collapsed shortly alter asking to be temporarily released from his hospital be where he had been under treatment for a heart condition.

Wagner was one of the South's most widely known gunmen, and at one time, was Mississippi's most wanted killer. He was also renowned for his ability as an escape artist.

Survivors include his father, Charlie M. Wagner. Speers Ferry. Va.: his stepmother. Mrs. Louisa Wagner: seven sisters, Mrs. Joe Mann. Gate City. Mrs. Rinda Tunnel, Lexington. Ky., Mrs. Rod Bellamy, Donovan. Ill., Mrs. Frank Adams. Robinette. W. Va., Mrs. Carl Winkle. Speers Ferry. Mrs. Jack Seckly, New Jersey; Mrs. C. W. Cunningham, Kingsport; four brothers; Oscar Wagner of Gate City, Kelsey and J. C. Wagner, both of Kingsport and Robert C. Wagner, Washington, D. C.

Virginia Myrtle (Moore) Wampler

KINGSPORT - Virginia Moore Wampler, 84, died Tuesday (April 17, 2007) at Wexford House after a lengthy illness.

Born in Scott County, Va. on June 13, 1922, she had lived in Kingsport since 1925. She retired from the tenite division of Eastman Kodak Company in 1979 after 36 years of service.

She was a member of Fort Robinson Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garnie M. Wampler; her parents, Charlie E. and Mary Fletcher Moore; one brother, C. Hubert Moore; two sisters, Marie Moore Dougherty and Martha Moore.

She is survived by three sisters, Irene Moore White, Anna Lou Moore Churchwell and Leola Moore Larkin, all of Kingsport; two brothers, Oscar W. Moore and James O. Moore, both of Kingsport; one sister-in-law, Faye Wampler Turner, Nickelsville, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Lowell D. Wampler and Lowell Dougherty, both of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Services will be at held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday with Pastor Jeff Wallen and Rev. Gene Hughes officiating.

Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, Gary Larkin, Phillip Larkin, Randy Moore, David Moore, Mark Moore, Duane Moore and David Churchwell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Clarence Painter, Keith Shirley, Charles Buckner, Gerald Bennett, Dewane Turner and Ronald Turner.

Nora Eureta Wallace

KINGSPORT — Nora Eureta Wallace, 76, entered into rest on Oct. 23, 2008 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was born July 29, 1932 in Scott County, Va., to the late James Materson Estep and Nettie Hammonds Estep.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby C. Wallace; great grandson, Daniel Wyrick Benton; brother, James Henry Estep.

She was a member of the Way of Life Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons, Wade McClellan and wife, Jamie Kingsport, Larry McClellan and wife Alice, Kingsport, Bobby A. Wallace and wife, Julie Kingsport; daughter, Mildred E. Elliott, Kingsport; sisters, Lorine Harless Kingsport, Jenny Davenport and husband, Bill Kingsport, Phyllis Gibson and husband, Carlos Gate City, Sue Gibson, Kingsport, Terry Davenport and husband, Leonard Kingsport, Jackie Gillenwater, Kingsport; brothers, Johnny Estep and wife, Dora Gate City, Randy Estep and wife, Martha Gate City; grandchildren, Tracey Wyrick, Staci Robinson and husband, Eric, Joni Elliott and fiance, Dean Montgomery, Amanda McClellan, Israel Wallace and Reece Wallace; great grandchildren, Aidan Robinson, Allie Montgomery, Kama Robinson; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Kyle Falin and Pastor Johnny Gibson officiating.

Music will be provided by Amanda McClellan, Bill and Sharon Owens and Deborah Falin.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Walnut Chapel Church Cemetery. The family will meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.

Pallbearers will be Tony LaForce, Jonathan Harless, Randall Gibson, Cameron Estep, Shane Estep, Timothy Davenport, Chris Buttry, Jimmy LaForce, Eric Robinson, Sean Benton and Dean Montgomery.

J. B. Wallen

CLAREMONT, N.C. — JB Wallen, 55, of Claremont, N.C., passed away Monday (Nov. 10, 2008) at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville, N.C.
Mr. Wallen was born July 26, 1953, in Sullivan County to the late Ray Wallen and Willivine Bishop Wallen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Nathan Wallen; and brothers, Jimmy Wallen and Jerry Wallen.
Mr. Wallen is survived by his wife, Judy Head Wallen; son, Michael Wallen and wife, Jennifer; sisters, Wanda Simpson and husband, David, Rita Lloyd and husband, Tommy and Brenda Spears and husband, Jack; and grandson, Jacob "Bo" Wallen.
The family will receive friends from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service at Drum Funeral Home.
A service of remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Scott Greene officiating.
Burial will follow in Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Wallen, Jeff Mayes, Clifford Wallen, David Simpson, Jerry Simpson and Elliott Wallen.

Jimmy Ray Wallen

CHURCH HILL - Jimmy Ray Wallen, 49, passed away Thursday (Feb. 24, 2005) following a brief illness.

Mr. Wallen was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and was a mechanic with Trents Auto Repair.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Wallen; grandson, Charles Scott Gillenwater, Jr.; brother, Jerry Lee Wallen; and grandmother, Addie Barnette Wallen.

He is survived by five daughters, Nowatta Blackburn, Ashley Wallen and Tana Wallen, all of Church Hill, Crystal Wallen, Ashland City, Tenn., Angel Coker, Greer, S.C.; two sons, Jimmy Ray Wallen, Jr. and fiance, Nakeshia McDonald, Kingsport, Jimmy Weston Wallen and fiance, Andrea Lawson, Church Hill; mothers of his children, Brenda Wallen, Church Hill; Linda Ball, Church Hill; four grandchildren, Waylon and Alex Blackburn, Kellie and Julie Coker; one brother and sister-in-law, J. B. and Judy Wallen, Claremont, N.C.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Jack Spears, Wanda and David Simpson, Rita and Tommy Lloyd, all of Church Hill; special friend and caregiver, Cheryl Berry; several nieces and nephews.

Nathan Wallen

CLAREMONT, N.C. - Nathan Wallen, 22, of Claremont, N.C., died Wednesday (Jan. 28, 2004) at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Born Jan. 31, 1981 in Kingsport, he was the son of J. B. and Judy Head Wallen of Claremont. He was employed in the electronics department of Wal-Mart and had been a student at Bunker Hill High School.

He was a member of Emerald Baptist Church in Hiddenite.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Echol Head; and his paternal grandfather, Ray Wallen.

Survivors include his parents, J.B. and Judy Head Wallen of Claremont; brother, Michael Wallen of the home; maternal grandmother, Mae Head of Church Hill; paternal grandmother, Willivine "Will" Calhoun of Church Hill; aunts, Kathryn Ray of Church Hill, Shelby Hawkins of New Tazewell, Tenn., Phyllis Tipton of Church Hill, Donna Holloway of Church Hill, Wanda Simpson of Church Hill, Brenda Spears of Church Hill, Rita Lloyd of Church Hill; uncles, Echol E. Head and Jimmy Wallen, both of Church Hill; several cousins.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Sunday at Drum Funeral Home Chapel, Conover, N.C.

Willivine "Will" (Bishop) Wallen

CHURCH HILL — Willivine Wallen, 71, of 370 Hurd Road, passed away Friday (April 4, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital & Medical Center following an extended illness.

Mrs. Wallen was a life long resident of Sullivan and Hawkins Counties and was a member of New Beginnings Church of Christ.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ray Wallen; two sons, Jerry and Jimmy Wallen; grandson, Nathan Wallen; her parents, Fonzie and Gracie McGee Bishop; two sisters, Lois Nadine Minton and Dora Maxine Wallen.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Jack Spears, Church Hill, Wanda and David Simpson, Rogersville, Rita and Tommy Lloyd, Church Hill; one son and daughter-in-law, J.B. and Judy Wallen, Claremont, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; two sisters, Pauline Holmes, Ohio, Madeline Lundy, Church Hill.

Special thanks to Tina Spears for being her caretaker.

Alma P. (Hobbs) Webb

KINGSPORT — Alma P. Webb, 86, formerly of Kingsport went to be with the Lord Sunday night, (Sept. 2, 2007), at St. Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville after a lengthy illness.

Born in Scott County, Va., she had resided most of her life in Kingsport; but had lived in Knoxville for the last five years.

Mrs. Webb was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Among some of her final words were "I want to be with the Lord."

Preceding her in death were her husband of 60 years, Echol Lavoy Webb on July 5, 2000; her parents, Ben and Clara Hobbs; a son-in-law, Keith McNutt; and two brothers, Lyle D. and Vernon Hobbs.

Surviving are a daughter, Jewel (McNutt) Garren and husband, Craig, Knoxville; a son, Maurice Lavoy Webb, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Sharon McNutt, Warren McNutt and wife, Cyndi, Anthony Lavoy Webb and wife, Amber; two great-grandsons, Luke Aaron McNutt, Caleb Andrew McNutt; a sister-in-law, Ethel Hobbs, Kingsport; two nieces; and several cousins, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12 to 2 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Cecil Sturgill officiating.

Burial will follow at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens.

Curtis Webb

KINGSPORT — Curtis Webb, 78, 1012 Kennedy Drive, went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning (Nov. 19, 1999) at Wexford House after an extended illness.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Kingsport. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Co. as a supervisor in the Polymers Division.
Mr. Webb was of the Baptist faith and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict serving in the United States Army. He was a member of the Kingsport Masonic Lodge No. 688, York Rite, the Jericho Temple of the Shrine and American Legion Hammond Post No. 3.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Haynes Webb; a brother, Don Webb; a sister, Clara Belle Williams; and a stepson, Lee Roy Gonce, Nov. 15, 1999.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Belle Gonce Webb, of the home; a son, Curtis Grady Webb, Mooresburg; three stepsons, Leonard Gonce, Don Gonce, Dr. Joel Dwight Gonce, all of Kingsport; grandsons, Jeff Webb, Brian Kelly Webb; three great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-granddaughters; two sisters, Ruth Lyons, Irving, Texas, Jeanette Yonce, Greeneville; three brothers, Glen Webb, Church Hill, Echol Webb, Gray and Gale Webb, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.
A masonic memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Hill Funeral Home Chapel by the Kingsport Masonic Lodge No. 688.
The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Max Weaver following the masonic service.
The family will receive friends following the chapel service and anytime at the home of a stepson, Dr. Joel Gonce, 1596 Cooks Valley Road.
Military entombment rites will follow in the Oak Hill Mausoleum by the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3.

Echol Lavoy Webb

KINGSPORT - Echol Lavoy Webb, 82, passed from this life to be with the Lord at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday (July 5, 2000) at Anderson Health care where he had been a resident since September 1994.

Mr. Webb was born in Kingsport, where he had lived his entire life. He was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a mail carrier retiring in 1980 after 30 years of service.

He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and taught the Men's Sunday School Class. Mr. Webb sang with several local quartets and attended singing conventions.

Mr. Webb was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Mary Webb; one sister, Clara Belle Williams; two brothers, Curtis and Don Webb; and a son-in-law, Keith McNutt.

Surviving are his wife, Alma Hobbs Webb, Kingsport; one daughter, Jewel McNutt, Indian Springs; a son, Maurice Lavoy Webb, Kingsport; three grandchildren, Sharon McNutt, Warren McNutt and wife, Cyndi, and Anthony Webb; two great-grandsons, Luke Aaron McNutt and Caleb Andrew McNutt; two sisters, Ruth Lyons, Irving, Texas and Jeanette Yonce, Greeneville; two brothers, Glen Webb and Gale Webb, both of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Cecil Sturgill officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens.

Gale Kenneth Webb Sr.

KINGSPORT — Gale Kenneth Webb Sr., 74, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Friday (Aug. 8, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mr. Webb proudly served in the United States Army for 21 years where he served in Vietnam and Korea. He loved his family and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Echol, Curt, Don; and sisters, Clara Belle Williams and Ruth Lyons.

Survivors include his daughter, Pamela Brooks and husband, Sammy of Kingsport; his son, Gale Kenneth "Kenny" Webb, Jr. and wife, Rebecca of Kingsport; the mother of his children, Juanita Jones of Church Hill; five grandchildren, Krista Brown, Austin Brooks, Brandon Webb, Carley Webb, and Lacy Bernard; sister, Jeanette Younce; brother, Glen Webb; very special sister-in-law, Kay Webb; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends any time at the home of Pam Brooks, 206 Rock City Road, Kingsport, Tenn., 37664.

Glen Edward Webb

CHURCH HILL — Glen Edward Webb, 77, of Church Hill, passed away Friday (Nov. 28, 2008) at his residence following a long illness.
Born in Kingsport, Glen had lived in Church Hill for the past 20 years. He was a retired mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and was of the Baptist faith.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Mary Pearcy Webb; sisters, Ruth Lyons and Clara Williams; brothers Echol, Curtis, Don and Gale Webb.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann Lane and husband, Bill of Erwin; sister, Jeanette Younce of Afton, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga St., Kingsport.
A funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Joe W. Byrd officiating.

Mary Belle (Wood) Gonce Webb

KINGSPORT - Mary Belle Gonce Webb, 87, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Monday (March 5, 2007) at Indian Path Medical Center.

She was born in Sullivan County and resided all her life in Kingsport. She was of the Baptist faith, a member of the Eastern Star and served in the Salvation Army Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Wood and Nannie Kate Gott Wood; first husband, Foister Brown "Jack" Gonce and second husband, Curtis Webb; two sons, Leonard and Lee Roy Gonce; and two brothers, Earl and Paul Wood.

Surviving are two sons, Don Gonce and wife, Dee of Kingsport, Dr. Joel Dwight Gonce and wife, Sandra of Kingsport; a daughter-in-law, Gladys Gonce of Kingsport; 10 grandchildren, Don Gonce, Jr., of Springfield, Mo., Mike, Joel and Elgin of Kingsport, Lorraine Doran, and Jana Jilton of Kingsport, Keisha Anderson and Belinda Karanek, both of Las Vegas, Deliliah Steen of North Carolina and Barbara Wells of Kingsport; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; also several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Funeral Home. Friends and family may visit anytime at the home of the son, Don Gonce.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Mike Beverly and Pastor Jim Manis officiating. Mike Gonce will give the eulogy.

Committal services will follow in the Oak Hill Mausoleum.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Anna Leola Amburgey Williams

NORTON, Va. — Anna Leola Williams, 87, passed away Sunday (Nov. 2, 2008) at the Mountain View Regional Medical Center Norton, Va.

She was a member of the West Norton Freewill Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Dundy Franklin Williams; a daughter, Juanita Faye Williams; and a grandson, Roy Lee Page Jr.

Surviving are a son, Jimmy F. Williams Sr. and his wife, Carolyn of Norton, Va; a daughter, Anna Lou Page and her husband, Roy of Wise, Va.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Glenn Ritchie officiating.

Arthur Fay Williams

KINGSPORT — Arthur Fay Williams, 83, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord peacefully on Sunday (Nov. 23, 2008) with his family by his side.
Mr. Williams was born on March 20, 1925 in Manville, Va., to the late Robert B. Williams and Minnie Musick Williams. After his marriage to Margie Carter of Rye Cove on April 19, 1947, the couple moved to the West Carter's Valley area of Kingsport in 1952. He was employed at Eastman Chemical Company for over 39 years serving in the Tenite Plastics Division until his retirement in 1986.
Mr. Williams served his country during World War II in the United States Army from May 21, 1943 until Dec. 14 1945. He served in both the European Theater and the Asiatic Pacific Theater and received the EAMET Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars and the Victory Medal.
Mr. Williams was a shy, humble Christian man who backed up his faith by the love and devotion he showed to all those who knew him including family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. He was a 58 year member of the Clinch- port Masonic Lodge No. 267 F&AM. He was a great inspiration to all who knew him and left behind a great example to follow. He had a wonderful sense of humor that will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his sister, Reba Kilgore; brothers, Frank E., Carson E., Claude B., Edsel K. and Hoyt O. Williams.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 61 years, Margie Carter Williams, of the home; daughter, Jenny Lou Frady and husband, Gary, of Church Hill; son, Joel A. Williams, of Kingsport; granddaughters, Candace Skelton and husband, Jason, of Church Hill, Brooke Robinette and husband, Kevin, of Whitmire, S.C. and Erin Thomas and husband, Devin, of Church Hill; great-granddaughters, Mia Skelton, Macie Skelton and Jenna Thomas; great-grandson, Curtis Robinette; sister, Bernice Bray and husband, Hoyt, of Kingsport; brother, Clayton O. Williams and wife, Margaret, of Blountville; along with many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home, 2060 US Highway 23N, Weber City, Va.
Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Dr. John Owston, Rev. Alan Buckles and Rev. Paul Lane officiating.
Military graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holston View Cemetery with the Virginia National Guard and the American Legion Hammond Post 265 conducting the rites. WEBER CITY, Va. - Billy Ray Williams, 63, Jennings Street, departed this life Friday morning (June 8, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was a native of Kingsport and was retired from Tennessee Eastman Chemical Co. as a warehousing supervisor.

KINGSPORT - Carson Echol Williams, 86, of Morrison Ave., departed this life early Wednesday morning (April 3, 2002) at the Brian Center in Weber City, Va.

He was a native of Scott County and a retired draftsman from Tennessee Eastman Company.

Mr. Williams was a member of Catlett Lodge #35 of Gate City. He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a native of Scott County, Va., and retired from Tennessee Eastman Company. Mr. Williams was of the Methodist faith.

WEBER CITY, Va. - Dorothy Cross Williams, 89, went to be with the Lord at 3:35 p.m. Monday (Feb. 12, 2007) while at the Brian Center for Health and Rehabilitation, Weber City, Va. after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Sullivan County and was the daughter of the late William Carter and Katherine Slaughter Cross on Nov. 3, 1917. She was of the Methodist faith and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carson Echol Williams; son, Billy Ray Williams; brother, Newton Cross; and several half-brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Phyllis Williams of Weber City, Va.; special granddaughter, Lisa Spivey and husband, Gerald of Cleveland, Tenn.; two special great-grandchildren, Andy and Adam Spivey; several nieces and nephews and other family members also survive.

GATE CITY, Va. - Edsel K. Williams, 73, Alley Valley community, died Saturday (March 12, 2005) at his residence.

He was born in Gate City, Va. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a TEC sergeant and Eastman Chemical Company as chemical operator.

He was a lifetime member of the Copper Creek Ruritan Club and attended Copper Creek Community Church.

Mr. Williams was a fine bluegrass guitar player who had many musical friends. He also enjoyed farming.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Bruce and Minnie Estil Musick Williams; his first wife, Irene Williams; three brothers, Frank, Carson E., and Claude Williams.

GATE CITY, Va. - Harold H. Williams, 69, of Route 1, passed away Tuesday (July 1, 2003) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol at 11:58 p.m.

Mr. Williams was born in Hawkins County and had resided in Scott County most of his life. He retired from T.E.C. as an electrician. Mr. Williams was a former member, superintendent, and teacher of Bellamy United Methodist Church and after closing he attended Smiths and Alleys Chapel U.M.C. Mr. Williams transferred his membership to Alleys Chapel U.M.C. and was also a member of Manville Ruritan Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Harve Ingle and Lois Davidson Williams; sister, Elva Williams; two brothers, Virgil Williams and Calvin Williams; and father-in-law: Claude Williams.

KINGSPORT -Mr. Hoyt O. Williams, 84, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord at Friday afternoon, (April 6, 2007) at Preston Place after an extended illness.

He was born in Scott County, Va. He was a member of the D.E.S.A. – Destroyer Escort Sailor's Association having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the D.E. 102, USS Thomas. Hoyt also loved music, especially stringed instruments which he once maintained for the Kingsport Symphony, Johnson City Symphony, East Tennessee State University, Kingsport City Schools and blue grass musicians all over the south.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Evelyn Ruth Pannell Williams; a son, Terry Williams, his parents, Robert Bruce and Minnie Estell Musick Williams; and four brothers, Claude B., Carson E., Frank E. and Edsel K. Williams.

Hoyt is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Arthur H. and Carolyn K. Williams; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur F. Williams and wife Margie and Clayton O. Williams and wife Margaret; two sisters and brother-in-law, Reba Kilgore and Bernice Bray and husband Hoyt; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Monday, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill, or anytime at the home of his son, Arthur.

MOUNT CARMEL - Mrs. Hulda Ervin ``Granny'' Williams , 96, formerly of Weber City, Va., went to be with the Lord Friday (Nov. 19, 1999) at the home of her son.

Mrs. Williams was born in Scott County, Va. on Jan. 18, 1903, the daughter of the late Andy Ervin and Alba Penley Ervin. She was a lifelong resident of Scott County, a member of Alley's Chapel Church and retired after 33 years of serving the Scott County School System.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Lee Williams , who died in 1936; her son, Harry Van Williams ; two brothers, Lorn and Wright Ervin; three sisters, Sarah Head, Alice Bellamy and Glady Ervin.

Survivors include his two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Conley Doran, Gate City, and Debbie and Mike Steadman, Kingsport; son, Shannon Williams, Gate City; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Wilma and Kemp Million, Kingsport, Doris and David Tipton, and Brenda and Bobby Hall, all of Gate City; grandchildren, Daryl Doran, Brian Doran, Bridgette Dennis, Mitchell Steadman and Delayna Steadman; great-grandchildren, Lexia Doran, Mallory Doran, Trinity Dennis, Kandace Livesay and David Doran; special friend, Morella Duncan; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Willie Neeley officiating.

Military graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Herman Church Cemetery, East Carters Valley. The family will meet at 12 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Juanita Faye Williams

NORTON, Va. — Juanita Faye Williams, 64, went home to be with her Savior on Sunday (Jan. 7, 2007) at the Mt. View Regional Medical Center in Norton, Va.

She was a member of the West Norton Church and Ladies Auxiliary and she was loved by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dundy F. Williams Sr.; and a nephew, Roy Lee Page Jr.

Surviving are her mother, Leola Williams of Norton, Va.; a sister, Anna Page and husband, Roy Lee Sr. of Wise, Va.; a brother, Jimmy F. Williams Sr. of Norton, Va.; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and greatnephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise, Va.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Glenn Ritchie officiating.

Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery.

Michael Bradford Williams

GATE CITY, Va. - Michael Bradford Williams, 60, passed away Thursday (Sept. 25, 2003) in Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born in Wise County, but had spent his entire life in Scott County. He was a son of the late L. Bee and Wanda Lane Williams. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Co. with 33 years of service. His last service was in the Polymers Division (DMT Department).

Surviving are his wife, Jane Shelton Williams, Gate City, Va.; three sons, Steve F. Williams and wife Cindy of Gate City, Va., Bradford R. Williams and wife Cynthia of Talbott, Tenn., and Mark A. Williams of Gate City, Va.; eight grandchildren, Steven, Jennifer, Stephani, Matthew, Sarah, Nathan, Andrew, Rachel; one sister, Dianna Margaret Williams of Owensboro, Ky.; one brother, Stewart (Bo) Williams and wife Debbie of Gate City, Va.; and one nephew, Christopher Williams.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va.

Vivian (Head) Williamson

HOPEWELL, Va. - Vivian Head Williamson, 62, died Wednesday (Aug. 22, 2001) at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Ms. Williamson was born in Kingsport on Sept. 25, 1938 and was a graduate of Sullivan High School.

She moved to Hopewell, Va., and retired from Firestone-Bridgestone after 32 years of service as a lab supervisor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessee C. Head on Nov. 11, 1987 and Monie L. Head on March 1, 2001; sister, Lakie C. Head; and an infant sister.

Surviving are three sisters, Frances H. Hensley, Drucella A. Head, both of Kingsport and Elva Head Cruz, Albuquerque, N.M.; two nieces and three nephews.

In accordance with Ms. Williamson's wishes, she had a private burial on Aug. 23, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Billy Joe Wilson

KINGSPORT — After a period of declining health, Billy Joe Wilson, 74, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, (Oct. 14, 2007).

Joe was born Sept. 29, 1933 in Sullivan County, a son of the late Otney J. Wilson and Lura Emma Chinouth Wilson and had resided in Sullivan County his entire life.

Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country in Korea. He retired in 1991 from AFG, after 35 years of service. While his health permitted, he faithfully attended Poplar Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Stanley Wilson, Helen Baines, Mack Wilson, Marie Irvin and Lemuel Wilson.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Nancy Jones Wilson; one daughter, Melissa Carpenter and her husband, Jeff of Kingsport; one son, Scott Wilson and his wife, Cheryl of Fall Branch; grandchildren, Ashley Applegate, Jeffery Carpenter, Adam Wilson and Molly Wilson; great-grandson, David Applegate; several sisters and brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home, or anytime at the home.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Elder Oscar Irvin and Rev. Carl Stickler officiating.

Graveside services will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.

Speers Ferry — Samuel Taylor Wilson, 77, died at his home in Robinette Valley in Scott County at 12:10 a. m. Monday. He was a native life-long resident of this section and was noted as a farmer and livestock grower.

He was a member of the Baptist church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty Jean Morrell Wilson, one son, John H. Wilson of Robinette Valley, four

daughters, Miss Pauline Wilson of Robinette Valley, Mrs. Virgle Kurd and Mrs. Irene Hurd of Kingsport and Mrs. Ella Mae Arkens of Berea, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a. m. at the school

near his home. Rev. Henderson Arnold will officiate. Burial will follow in the nearby Morrell cemetery.

GATE CITY, Va. - Garland L. Wisley, 89, Route 1, went home to be with the Lord Friday (Sept. 17, 2004) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born in Scott County, Va. on Sept. 15, 1915 and was the son of the late Walter P. Wisley and Myrtle Lane Wisley. He retired from Daugherty Bros. as a certified welder and mechanic.

Mr. Wisley was a member of Gate City United Methodist Church and member of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 170 Gate City, I.O.O.F.

He will always be remembered for his big smile and hearty laugh.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Monnie Reynolds and Lena Bizzell; brothers, Luther Wisley, Echol Wisley, and Hubert Wisley.

Surviving are his wife, Iva Williams Wisley of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Dan Bullion, Kingsport; grandchildren, Ginger A. Hawk, Trevor Bullion, Misty Pressley; great-grandchildren, Mary Tate Bullion, Parker Bullion, Emma Bullion, Emily Pressley; several nieces and nephews.

Kermit. Va.—Clarence II. Witters, farmer and livestock grower of this community and charter member of the Catron Chapel Church, died at his home here Wednesday.

He was a native of Preble County, Ohio. After moving to Scott County, he was actively interested in the Catron Chapel Church and one of its charter members.

Immediate survivors include his widow, step-son and step-daughter, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will he held at the Catron Chapel Church at 1 p. m. Friday with interment in the Holston View Cemetery. Rev. Pleas Jenkins and Rev. Dana Crawford will have charge of the rites.

GRAY — Brenda Lee Crowe Woodby, 27, of Gray, passed away Tuesday evening (Nov. 25, 2008) in Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Kingsport and attended Tri-City Apostolic Church.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Bobbie Peters Crowe.

O.M. Woods

KINGSPORT — O.M. Woods, 83, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (Nov. 5, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was born in Hawkins County on May 8. 1925, son of the late Will and Francis Freeman Woods.

Mr. Woods served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended Cedar View Independent Methodist Church and was a former member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. He loved to witness for his savior, Jesus Christ.

He worked at Mead Paper for 34 years until his retirement in 1988. A long-time member of the Carters Valley Ruritan, he was a part time farmer and avid golfer, loving husband, daddy, papaw and great papaw.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Will and Francis Woods, brothers, "Puny", Rob, Archie, Carl, "Babe", Herchel, J.T. Woods; sisters, "Lade" Blizzard and Mildred Crigger.

O.M. is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frankie Christian Woods; sons, Larry Woods and his wife, Linda, Gary Woods and his wife, Brenda; daughter, Ginger Cooter and her husband, Danny; grandchildren, Gary Woods and his wife, Alison, Traci Osborne and her husband, Dennis, Amy Patterson and her husband, Travis, Tina Hensley, Brandon Cooter and his wife, Lori; great-grandchildren, Cozette, Austin, Brianna, Isaiah, Lauren, Aubree, Aaliyah and Madelyn; sisters, Ruby Gibbons and Julia Francisco; brothers, Claude Woods and wife, Joanna and Joe Woods and his wife, Mogoline. ROGERSVILLE — Dilton Hunter Yankee, 65, passed away on Friday (Nov. 14, 2008) following an extended illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and a member of the Northfork Ruritan Club. A veteran of the Vietnam war, he spent his career serving his country in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Yankee graduated from Church Hill High School in 1961 and was a member of their championship football team.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Georgia Yankee; three borthers, Dennis Wayne, Shelby and Arlon Yankee; and sister, Nell Wanda McLain.

Husband of Louise Casteel Young b. Scott Co.

KINGSPORT — Denna W. Young , 92, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Sunday (April 27, 2008).

He was born May 3, 1915, in Ripley, W.Va., and was the son of the late Franklin and Elpha (Vannest) Young .

Denna retired from the Dupont Belle Meade plant after 35 years of service. He and his wife moved to Greeneville in the early 1980’s where they lived until recently. Mr. Young was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Greeneville. He loved his Savior and was looking forward to going home after a long life of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Richard Young ; eight brothers, Homer, Lewis, William, Gilbert, Owen, Charles, Howard and Robert Young ; and one sister, Hazel Young .

He is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Louise C. Young ; stepson, William McConnell; stepdaughter, Loretta Rice; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Dr. David Green officiating.

Graveside services will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.

KINGSPORT — Louise C. Young, 90, went to be with her Lord on Friday Oct. 24, 2008.

Louise was born in Dungannon, Va. She and Denna lived in Scott Depot, W.Va. and moved to Greenville, Tenn. after Denna retired from Dupont Chemicals in 1978. Louise and Denna loved to travel and took advantage of their early years in retirement to explore the U.S. They were long-time members of First Baptist Church, Greeneville, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 65 years, Denna Willard Young; her son, Richard Young; her parents, Arthur Casteel and Susie Hall Casteel; her brothers, Omar, Phillip, Paul, Carson and Logan; her sisters, Nannie, Pauline, Panna Blevins, Ella Blevins, Lula Ramsey, Jessie Smith; and her half-brother, Nathan.

She is survived by her son, William Jack McConnell and his wife, Peggy, and her daughter Loretta. She is also survived by her half-sisters, Emily Franklin and Jeannette Henry; as well as six grandchildren, Teresa Carter, Gary McConnell, Russell Rice, Tina Lucas, Richard Young, Pam Grimes; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday at East Lawn Funeral Home from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. David Green officiating.
