Lula Bell Ramsey

DUNGANNON, Va. — Lula Bell Ramsey, 95, went to be with the Lord Sunday (Sept. 21, 2008) at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.

She was born in Wise County, Va. March 2, 1913 to the late Arthur Casteel and Susie Hall.

She was a member and attended the Dungannon Freewill Baptist Church for more than 75 years.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Jess Ramsey; daughter, Virginia Lee Ramsey; sisters, Panna Blevins, Ella Blevins and Jessie Smith; brothers, Omar Casteel, Paul Casteel, Carson Casteel, Phillip Casteel, Nathan Casteel and Logan Casteel.

Survivors include her three daughters, Loretta and husband, Ray Stallard, Greenville, S.C., Sandy and husband, Steve Collins, Dungannon, Va. and Glenda and husband, Ed Anderson, Apopka, Fla.; sisters, Louise Young, Kingsport, Jeanette Henry, Kingsport and Emily Franklin, Kingsport; grandchildren, Russell Rice, Jessica Watkins, Scott Anderson, Jamie Maine and Heather Taylor; three great- grandchildren, Sydney Watkins, Reagan Watkins and Jacob Anderson; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville and other times at the residence of Steve and Sandy Collins.

Services will be at 8 p.m. at the church with Rev. Steve Collins and Dr. Marshall Williams officiating.

Music will be by Bud Harmon.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Hill Memorial Gardens, Castlewood, Va. The family will meet at 10 a.m. at the church for the graveside service.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Honorary pallbearer will be Russell Jay Rice.

The family would like to thank the Brian Center for all their assistance during her illness.

Peggy Sue (Neff) Fansler Ray

KINGSPORT - Peggy Sue Neff, 49, Kingsport, eased off and went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (April 25, 2007) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a long struggle with her health.

She was devoted to her children, family and her God.

She was the daughter of the late Otto Neff.

She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Ray and Hannah Ray, both of Kingsport; mother, Joy Frazier Neff, Kingsport; sisters, Donna Neff and Onita Neff, both of Kingsport; brothers, Eddie Dean Neff, Kingsport and Tommy Lee Neff, Bristol, Va.; niece, Julia Ball Piner; and nephews, Jason Neff, Logan Ball and Joseph Neff.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gardners Chapel Cemetery, Hiltons, Va., with only loved ones and friends. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 9 a.m. to go in procession to the service.

The family would like to thank all who have been there for Peggy's daughters, family and for their prayers.

James "Jay" Conley Reed

Obituary from Kingsport Times-News for descendants of Scott Co Ancestors

KINGSPORT — James "Jay" Conley Reed, 70, entered into rest Thursday (Oct. 30, 2008) at Brookhaven Nursing Home.

He was born in Scott County, Va., to Conley Reed and Mary Austin.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Reed; and one son, Trevor Reed.

Survivors include his daughters, Ramona Reed Curtis, Nickelsville, Va., and Tammy Reed Smith, Gate City, Va.; son, Randy Reed and wife, Lisa, Bloomingdale; brother, Jack Reed, Iuka, Ill.; grandchildren, Crystal Curtis, Brandon Reed, Rachel Reed, Ryan Reed, Cody Smith, Hailey Smith, Justin Reed and Megan Reed; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his granddaughter, Crystal Curtis, Big Moccasin Road.

Services will be at 1 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Tommy Benton officiating.

Music will be provided by Freddie and Sonya Redman and Bill Smith.

Burial will follow the service at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Reed, Bronson Easterling, David Starnes, Corey McCarty, Cody Smith and Daniel Henry.

Honorary pallbearer will be Randy Reed.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Sue Ellen (Duncan) Reed

GATE CITY, Va. — Sue Ellen Duncan Reed, 71, of Gate City, Va., went to be with the Lord Tuesday morning (Feb. 19, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Weber City and was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. One of her greatest loves, in this life, was her care of children and growing flowers.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ralph Reed, Gate City; three daughters, Marjo Cox and husband, George, Jonesborough, Carla Morgan and husband, Ron, Dayton, Tenn., and Arlinda Arnold and husband, Mike, Abingdon, Va.; son, Terrell Reed and wife, Tracy, Gate City; eight grandchildren, Marthanna, Tanya, Komar and wife, Jessica, Carlena, Alora, Allison, Lex and Ty; great-grandchild, Gavin; sister, Joyce Duncan Wolfe, Kingsport; brothers, Lester Duncan and wife, Judy, Chuckey, Douglas Duncan, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Paul Blessing officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends and family planning to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:55 p.m.

Hayter Derting Reynolds

BLOUNTVILLE - Hayter "Big Daddy" Reynolds, 62, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (March 17, 2005) after an extended illness.

Born in Hiltons, Va., he had resided most of his life in Blountville and was the owner of Reynolds Mobile Home Service.

Mr. Reynolds will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

His parents, Howard Hayter and Maxie Derting Reynolds preceded him in death.

Surviving are the love of his life, Ethel Reynolds, Blountville; one daughter, Rebekah Reynolds, Blountville; four sons, Chris Reynolds and wife, Penny, Johnson City, Hayter Dee Reynolds and wife, Lee, Kingsport, Howard Reynolds and wife, Lisa, Kingsport, Bryan Reynolds and wife, Leslie, Blountville; four grandchildren, Jordyn Reynolds, Samantha Reynolds, Zachary Reynolds, and Alexandria Quillin; one sister, Peggy Gray, Blountville; one brother, Warren Reynolds, Blountville; his beloved uncle, Calvin Derting, Blountville; and several nieces and nephews.

Maxie (Derting) Reynolds

KINGSPORT - Maxie Reynolds, 88, died Tuesday evening (Sept. 28, 1999) at SunBridge at Hillside after a period of declining health.

Born in Scott County, Va., she had resided in the Hiltons, Va. area most of her life.

Her husband, Howard H. Reynolds preceded Mrs. Reynolds in death, September 1944.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Peggy) Gray, Blountville; two sons, Warren F. Reynolds and Hayter D. Reynolds , both of Blountville; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace Fleenor, Bristol, Va.; two brothers, W.O. (Bud) Derting and Calvin C. Derting, both of Hiltons, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT — Katharyn Bell Riley, 88, Kingsport, died at 1 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 22, 2008) at her home.
She is survived by her husband, J.W. Riley, Jr. of Kingsport; one sister, Cora Evelyn Hagood of Florida; one brother, John Bell of Johnson City; an aunt, Virginia Coley of Kingsport.
It was her desire to be cremated. There will be no services.

Joseph William Riley, III

KINGSPORT — Joseph William Riley, III, 64, of Kingsport, passed away unexpectedly at his home Wednesday (May 23, 2007).
Billy was an avid book collector and a lover of people. He also served in the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by his parents, Joseph Riley, Jr. and Katharyn B. Riley, Kingsport.
The family will receive friend from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport.

ROGERSVILLE - Edith Faye (Housewright) Rhoton, 59, of Rogersville, passed away Friday evening (Sept. 2, 2005) at her residence following an extended illness.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ranson Elijah and Gertie Mae Housewright; brother, Audley Corns Housewright; and Wanetta Housewright Hodge.

Surviving are her husband, Rufus Nelson Rhoton of the home; children, Sidney Nelson Rhoton of Weber City, Va., Wesley Keith Rhoton of Rogersville, Carla Renne Wood of Rogersville, and Heather Denise Rhoton of Bristol, Tenn.; grandchildren, Ashley Brooke Davis, Kathryn (Katie) Grace Rhoton, Madison Faye Rhoton, Cynthia Annalise Rhoton, and Seth Trent Rhoton; siblings, Edward Samuel Housewright of Yuma, Va., Arizona Pearl Housewright Herron of Gate City, Va., Mildred Yvonne Housewright Rogers of Kingsport, and Geneva Mae Housewright Maultbay of Surgoinsville; several nieces and nephews.

Rufus Nelson Rhoton

ROGERSVILLE — Rufus Nelson Rhoton, 66, of Rogersville, went to be with the Lord on Friday morning (Nov. 21, 2008) at his home.
He was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He was a member of the Rogersville VFW Post # 9543. He was a member of the American Legion # 21 and Disabled American Veterans # 59. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son and friend and will be missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Faye Housewright Rhoton; and father, Rufus Sidney Rhoton.
He is survived by his mother, Mildred Painter of Tazewell; sister, Linda Fritzpatrick of Tazewell; two sons, Sidney Rhoton and wife, Sandra Peters Rhoton of Weber City and Wesley Rhoton and wife, Jennifer Jones Rhoton of Rogersville; two daughters, Carla Rhoton Wood and Heather Pickel and husband, John of Bristol, Tenn.; grandchildren, Ashley Brooke Davis, Kathryn Grace Rhoton, Madison Faye Rhoton, Cynthia Annalise Rhoton and Seth Trent Rhoton; several nieces and nephews.

Becky Marie (Vaughn) Ramey Robbins

KEOKEE, Va. - Becky Marie Ramey Robbins, 62, died Saturday (March 29, 2003) as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born in Scott County, Va., she was a daughter of Ida Bell Barnette Vaughn and the late Bud Vaughn. She was a retired home health aid and attended the Crab Orchard Holiness Church.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by three brothers, Clarence Vaughn, Jerry Vaughn and Herman Vaughn.

Surviving are her husband, Fred Robbins of Keokee; her mother, Ida Bell Vaughn of Duffield, Va.; sons, Johnny Dean and wife Penny Ramey of Duffield, Va., and Jerry Lynn (Buddy) Ramey of Dillwyn, Va.; brothers, Claude and wife Mildred Vaughn of Church Hill, Errett and wife Debbie Vaughn of Hiltons, Va., Pete and wife Edna Vaughn of Hiltons, Va., Leonard and wife Ethel Vaughn of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Sue Burton of Hiltons, Va., Debbie and husband Jay Egan of Duffield, Va., Bobbie and husband Stevie Payne of Duffield, Va.; stepdaughters, Gilda Ely and Ann Delph, both of Jonesville, Va.; stepsons, Randall Robbins of Lewisburg, Tenn., and Hershell Robbins of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; grandchildren, Adam Ramey and Jason Ramey; several stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pearl L. (Bledsoe) Robbins

KINGSPORT _ Pearl Robbins, 97, 908 Meadow Lane, died at 2 p.m. Sunday (May 14, 2000) at Wexford House.

Born in Blackwater, Va., she lived most of her life in Church Hill and Kingsport. She was a Baptist.

Mrs. Robbins was preceded in death by her husband, Ted J. Robbins in 1978.

Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn Bailey and husband, Wright Bailey, Kingsport, Glenda Kimbrel and husband, Cal Kimbrel, Longwood, Fla.; one son, James Clois (Jim) Robbins and wife, Wanda Casteel Robbins, Blountville; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ben Bledsoe, Gate City, Va., Zack Bledsoe, Kingsport, Everette Bledsoe, Blackwater, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Aaron Amos Roberts

KINGSPORT - Aaron Amos Roberts, 80, of Kingsport, passed away on Saturday (March 20, 2004).

Mr. Roberts was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served with the 4th Marine Division during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He received the Purple Heart and many other citations during his time with the Marine Corps. He was a long-standing member of the VFW.

He retired from the Ratheon Manufacturing Company.

Surviving are his wife, Georgia Roberts; three sons, Alex Roberts of Columbia, S.C., a 20-year military veteran, Randy Roberts and wife Kelly of Broadway, Va., and Jack Tate and wife Lee of Kingsport; a daughter, Sue Armstrong of Kingsport; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ted and Fred Roberts of Bristol; and a special niece, Phyllis Fultz of Bristol.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home.

Graveside services will follow immediately in the Oak Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Jerry Hickman officiating. Military honors will be performed by the VFW Post #3382 Color Guard.

Georgia (Bishop) Hawkins Roberts

KINGSPORT - Georgia Roberts, 83, passed away Wednesday morning (Jan. 12, 2005) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

A native of Scott County, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Robert and Maggie Roach Bishop. She retired as a receptionist from Wholesale Electric of Kingsport and was of the Methodist faith.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Curtis Hawkins; and her second husband, Aaron Roberts, who passed away in March of 2004.

She is survived by a daughter, Sue Armstrong of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Melinda Salyer of Hiltons, Va., Elizabeth Armstrong of Johnson City, and Robert Armstrong of Kingsport.

There will be no visitation or funeral services.

The graveside committal service will take place at 11 a.m. today at the Oak Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Gary Cavin officiating.

Deborah Jayne Mullins Robinette

Obituary from Kingsport Times-News for descendants of Scott Co Ancestors. Karl Robinette’s family is from Scott Co. No info about whether these Mullins have roots in Scott Co.

HARLAN, Ky. — Deborah Jayne Mullins Robinette, 49, died early Friday morning (Oct. 31, 2008) in a Knoxville Hospital following a short illness.

A resident of Harlan, Ky, she was born in Norfolk, Va. on Nov. 22, 1958 to Mary Elizabeth Mullins and the late Hubert Gordon Mullins. Debbie was a member of Ervinton High School’s graduating class of 1977 in Nora, Va., and furthered her education at Southeast Community and Technical College receiving her degree as a registered nurse. Debbie was an active member of Harlan Baptist Church, where she enjoyed serving God with each opportunity that arose including teaching the K-2 children’s Sunday school class. She was the director of nursing at Horizon Adult Healthcare and was passionate about her work, touching the lives of both coworkers and patients.

In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her sister, Tammy (Jeff) Long of Knoxville, Tenn.

Debbie is survived by her husband, Karl Robinette; and three sons, Justin, 20, Frank, 16 and Grant, 10 years; mother, Mary Elizabeth Mullins, Knoxville, Tenn.; two brothers, Ken (Becky) Mullins of Atlanta, Ga. and John (Jean) Mullins of Blacksburg, Va.; two sisters, Connie (Bill) Stanley of Newnan, Ga. and Tina (Bob) Frazier of Knoxville, Tenn.; father and mother-in-law, Frank (Madge) Robinette, Harlan, Ky. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Debbie will be remembered as a wonderful, caring mother, daughter, sister and friend whose sense of humor and devotion to church and family will be sadly missed but beautifully remembered.

Viewing for friends and relatives will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. at Harlan Baptist Church, immediately followed by a memorial service. Officiating will be Debbie’s pastor of 18 years, John Ditty.

Graveside entombment will follow on Monday at 1 p.m. in the Robinette Family Cemetery in Fairview, Va.

MENTOR ON THE LAKE, Ohio - Ira Clinton Robinette, 69, passed away Monday (April 21, 2003).

He was preceded in death by his parents, James William Robinette and Betty Ann Shelton Robinette; son, Randal Curtis Robinette; and one brother, Gale B. Robinette.

Lurana (Lyons) Robinette

GATE CITY — Mrs. Lurana Lyons Robinette, 84, Gate City, Va., passed away Friday (Nov. 14, 2008) at Holston Manner, Kingsport.
Mrs. Robinette was born in Scott County, Va., on July 2, 1924, the daughter of the late Daniel and Laura Kilgore Lyons.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Omer Robinette; sisters, Jerline Anderson and Eunice Clark; and brothers, Roy and Andy Lyons.
Surviving is her sister, Iona Horton, Richmond, Va.; and several special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at the Gate City Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Eckel Herron officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kilgore Cemetery in the Big Springs community of Hancock County, Tenn.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will be meeting at the cemetery for the graveside service.

Beulah Ann (Fields) White Rollins

GATE CITY, Va. - Beulah Ann Rollins, 60, entered into rest Saturday (Feb. 22, 2003) at Greystone Health Care Center, Blountville.

She was born in Sullivan County on August 11, 1942, to the late Thurman and Lydia Bowser Fields.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Rose Callahan; and brother, Thurman Fields Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Ray White and Steven James Rollins, both of Gate City; two sisters, Barbara Lampkins, Lebanon, Va., and Mary Fields Calton, Kingsport; two brothers, Carl Lee Fields, Kingsport, David Fields, Gate City; grandchildren, Jessica Ann White, Candice Naomi White, Becky Rollins and Jennifer Rollins; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the Juanita S. Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Scott Fields officiating.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Prospect Church Cemetery, Yuma, Va. The family will be meeting at the cemetery for graveside services.

Charles Lester Rutherford

DUFFIELD, Va. - Charles "Lester" Rutherford, 82, Duffield, Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday (Dec. 29, 2006).

He was born in Wise County, Va. to the late James Elbert Rutherford and Rosa Victoria Bowman Rutherford.

He was a Baptist minister and pastored several area churches. Lester was a loyal servant to God.

He was in the third Army during World War II and was proud to serve his country.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Rutherford.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Delena Clendenin Rutherford, of the home; son, Phillip Rutherford and wife Belinda, Duffield, Va.; daughter, Tracy Lee and husband Richard, of the home; brother, Jack Rutherford and wife Rita, Marion, Ohio; sister, Nancy K. Wilson, Pryor, Okla.; three grandchildren, Lindsey Lee, Steve Rutherford and wife Kristen, Leslie Addington and husband Brandon; one great grandchild, Jordan Hughes; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Gate City Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home, with Rev. Eckel Herron and Rev. Bill Tignor officiating.

Music will be provided by The Ferrymen.

Military graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2007) at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va., conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265.

Mary Ruth (Bowen) Rutherford

KINGSPORT - Mary Ruth Rutherford, 69, 1352 Bridwell Street, died Saturday (April 15, 2000) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

She was born in Duffield, Va., a daughter of the late Floyd Mack and Gladys Duncan Bowen. She was a sales associate with Wal-Mart for 38 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded by a grandson, James Matthew Edwards; a sister; and two brothers.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Paul Rutherford , of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Tim Hickman, Kingsport, Karen and Michael Steadman, Church Hill; a brother, Donald Bowen, Virginia; four grandchildren, Tonya, Heather, Mark and Jessica; four great-grandchildren, Ashley, Hunter, Logan and Nicholas.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at East Lawn Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. David Doty officiating.

Paul Edward Rutherford

KINGSPORT - Paul Edward Rutherford, 77, went to sleep in the arms of Jesus at Hospice House in Bristol following a short battle with cancer on Tuesday (June 15, 2004).

Paul had lived in Kingsport for over 50 years, having moved from Scott County, Va. He retired from Kingsport Press, now known as Quebecor World, after 35 years of service. He served in World War II and held the rank as corporal T5.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Ruth Rutherford; a grandson, James Matthew Edwards; and his parents, Elbert and Rosa Rutherford.

Surviving are two daughters, Karen Steadman and husband Michael of Church Hill, Cathy Hickman and husband Tim of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Mark Edwards of Kingsport, Jessica Steadman and fiancé T.J. Ross of Knoxville, Heather Myers and husband Michael of Church Hill, Tonya Hutton and husband David of Bristol, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren, Gavin, Hunter, Logan, Mikayla, Ashley, Nickolas, Madi-Beth, and Jacob; one sister, Nancy K. Wilson, Pryor, Okla.; two brothers, Jack and wife Rita of Marion, Ohio, Lester and wife Delena of Clinchport, Va.; seven nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.

William F. "Bill" Salley

KINGSPORT — William F. "Bill" Salley, 81, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Saturday (Oct. 4, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport. Bill served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church. He retired from Holston Defense Corporation after over 43 years of service. Bill was a member of Sinking Creek Masonic Lodge 575 and Kingsport Scottish Rite Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Cornette Salley; parents, Lloyd C. and Cora Lee Templeton Salley.

He is survived by his wife, Lorella "Lou" Salley, of the home; son, Pastor, W. David Salley and his wife, Rhonda, Blountville; step-daughter, Sandy White, Kingsport; sister, Ruby Gibson, Kingsport; three nephews, Greg Gibson, Wayne Gibson and Bob Shields; one niece, Theresa Snodgrass.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Memorial Park with W. David Salley officiating and the Tennessee National Guard, presenting of flag to family. Family and friends who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:55 a.m.

Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Carter Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport, Tenn.

A celebration of life service will follow at 6 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor W. David Salley officiating.

WEBER CITY, Va. - Ava Elizabeth Salling , 99, entered into rest on Monday (Sept. 6, 1999) at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Weber City, Va.

Ms. Salling was born in Scott County, Va. on April 3, 1900. She was the daughter of the late William Floyd and Lummy Edwards Templeton.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lee Roy Harris; second husband, Wetzel Salling ; two sons, William Carson Harris and Lennis Franklin Harris; four sisters, Nannie Templeton, Cora Templeton Salley, Lovely Templeton Jones and Lula Templeton; and two brothers, Floyd and Hobert Templeton.

Surviving are two sons, Roy Eugene Harris, Weber City, Va., and Clarence Harris, Lake Havasu City, Ari.; one brother, Elmer Templeton, Maryville, Tenn.; grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Floyd Salling, 93, passed away Saturday (May 26, 2001) at Indian Path Medical Center.

Born in Scott County, Va., Mr. Salling was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Salling; and a grandson, Michael Taylor.

Surviving are three daughters, Shirlene Fraysier and Pauline Taylor, both of Kingsport, and Margarette Taylor, Gate City, Va.; one son, Clayton Salling, Kingsport; brother, Bartley Salling, Ft. Blackmore, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no formal visitation.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Wrightley Salling officiating.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

NICKELSVILLE, Va. — Nancy "Nanny" G. Dockery Salyer, 69, passed away Thursday (Nov. 27, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical C e n t e r.
She was born in Scott County, Va., on April 13, 1939 and was the daughter of the late Cowden and Martha Castle Dockery. She was a homemaker and a member of Culbertson Chapel in Nickelsville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kennith D. Salyer; and five brothers, Jack Dockery, Cline Dockery, Dale Dockery, B.C. Dockery and Cadle Wallace Dockery.

KINGSPORT — Bill R. Sanders, 74, of Kingsport, passed away Friday (Nov. 28, 2008) at his residence.
He was born in Scott County, Va. and moved to Kingsport in 1951. Bill was a member of Vermont United Methodist Church. He was a member of Kingsport Masonic Lodge #688 and Knoxville Scottish Rite Bodies. Bill was retired member of IBEW Local #934, AFG Glass Plant where he was employed for over 36 years as an electrician.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rellia Starnes Sanders; father, George Jack Sanders; sister, Romelda Sanders; brother, Fred Lee Sanders.
Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara Kallam Sanders, of the home; two daughters, Debbie Locke, and husband Mike, of Kingsport, Vickie Snodgrass and husband Duane, of Kingsport; one son, Jeff Sanders and wife, Lori, of South Haven, Miss.; three grandchildren, Hunter Locke, Scott M. KINGSPORT - George Jackson "Jack" Sanders, 95, went to be with his Savior Jesus Christ Saturday (Nov. 16, 2002) at Indian path Medical Center.

Mr. Sanders was born in Scott County, Va., on Dec. 1, 1906, son of the late John L. and Callie I. Carter Sanders.

He was a member of Oak Drive Independent Church and a former member of Starnes Bluff Evangelical Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Rellia M. Starnes Sanders in 1987; daughter, Romelda Sanders, 1980; son, Fred L. Sanders, 1997; son-in-law, Johnny R. GATE CITY, Va. - Glen E. Sanders, 70, entered into rest with the Lord Saturday (May 31, 2003) at his residence.

Born on August 20, 1932 in Scott County, Va., he was the son of the late Kinley H. and Hannah Sanders. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He served his country as a Marine during the Korean War. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Company and was an active member of the Republican Party of Scott County, the American Legion, the Virginia Coalfield Economical Development Authority, and was chairman of Scott County Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

Survivors include his wife, Helen J. HILTONS, Va. - Minnie M. Sanders, 77, went to be with the Lord Monday (Oct. 14, 2002) at Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home, Duffield, Va. after a brief illness.

She was born in Scott County, Va., in April 25, 1925. She was a devoted wife and mother.

She was of the Baptist faith and truly loved the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Mary Hall; one son, Kenley James Sanders.

Richard Douglas Sanders

COEBURN, Va. — Richard Douglas Sanders, 56, of Coeburn, Va., passed away Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2008) at the Bristol Regional Medical Center Bristol, Tenn.

He was a disabled coal miner, member of the UMWA and former employee of Clinchfield Coal Company; a Veteran of the Vietnam Era served in the U.S. Marines.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Sanders; and a brother, Ronald Sanders.

Surviving are his mother, Thelma Sanders, of Coeburn, Va.; his wife, Margaret Sanders; a son, Richard (R.J.) GATE CITY, Va. - Thomas Hughes Sanders Sr., 85, formerly of Gate City, departed this life Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2002) at Greystone Health Care, Blountville.

He was a native of Scott County, Va., and a disabled Army veteran of World War II.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosetta Moran; parents, John Sanders and Callie Carter Sanders; several brothers and one sister.

KINGSPORT - Lucille A. Sharp, 73, of Kingsport, passed away Sunday (Oct. 29, 2006) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Kingsport, she was a lifelong resident. She retired from the Sullivan County Board of Education and was a member of the United Church of God.

She enjoyed growing flowers and sewing and was a student of the Fire and Water School in Blountville.Her parents, Lee and Sarah Head; a sister, Bernice Dishner; and four brothers, Echol, Kermit, William and Roy Head preceded her in death.

Surviving are her husband, Donald A. Sharp, Kingsport; a son, Terry L. Sharp, Kingsport; one sister, Clara Moore, Claremont, N.C.; two brothers, Kenneth Head and Glen Head, both of Kingsport; special niece, Lois Martin, Kingsport; and several other nieces and nephews.

GATE CITY, Va. — Grace Virginia Moore Shelton, 90, of Gate City, went to be with the Lord on Saturday (Nov. 8, 2008) at Indian Path Medical Center, Kingsport.
She was a long-time member of Cowan’s Branch Missionary Baptist Church, where she was an active in the Woman’s Missionary Society (WMV) and served as a Sunday school teacher.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Roy T. Shelton; her parents, W. Blaine Moore, Sr. and Nettie Wininger Moore; two brothers, Paul Moore and W.B. Moore, Jr. and a daughter-in-law, Wilma Shelton.
Survivors include her daughter, Nettie Lou Haynes and husband, John of Kingsport; three sons, J. Fred Shelton of Gate City, Ron Shelton and wife, Jeannie of Gate City, John Shelton and wife, Shirley of Kingsport; nine grandchildren, James Alan Shelton and wife, Greta, Marty Shelton and wife, Cathy, Levita Haynes, Larissa Dorton, Crystal Feagins and husband, Lynn, Bryan Shelton and wife, Sheila, Kim Shelton, Brent Shelton and wife, Kristie and Travis Shelton and wife, Jenny; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Beulah Phillips of Gate City; a sister-in-law, Virginia Ellen Moore of Gate City; special niece, Linda Shelton Stapleton; and many other nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.

Shelton, 56, resident of this section for many years, died at her home yesterday at 9:30 p. m. following a lingering illness. She was the daughter of James and Mary Rogers Davidson.

Surviving are four sons, Roy T., Thurman S., Jessie J. and Hasen Davidson, a brother, Robert Davidson, four sisters, Mrs. C. C. Shelton,Mrs. W. H. Wolfe, all of this section, Mrs. M. F. Wilma Nelle (Porter) Shelton

GATE CITY, Va. — Wilma (Porter) Shelton, 72, of the Cowans Branch community, went be with the Lord early Thursday morning (July 5, 2007) after courageous battle with cancer while at her residence.
She was born a daughter of the late Bordie and Eulalee Agee Porter of Scott County, Va. on April 20, 1935. She was of the Baptist faith, and was a homemaker and previous to her illness, she was co-owner and clerk with her husband, J. Fred at Shelton’s Grocery in the Cowans Branch comunity. She was preceded in death by her brother, Emory Horton Porter.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, J. Fred Shelton, of the home; two sons, James Alan Shelton and wife, Greta of Church Hill and Marty Edward Shelton and wife, Cathy of York, Pa.; two special grandsons, Marshall and Trevor Shelton; one sister, Dana Lois Kyllonen and husband, Herb; three brothers, Jack Porter and wife, Betty, Lloyd Porter and wife, Lynda, Bill Porter and wife, Irene; mother-in-law, Grace V. Shelton; a very special sister-in-law, Nettie Lou Haynes, all of Gate City, Va.; several nieces, nephews and others also survive.
Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home.
The funeral will follow with Rev. Paul Blessing, Rev. Bill Porter and Rev. Larry Tolley officiating.

KINGSPORT — James Porter Shipley, 79, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (Oct. 29, 2008) at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Weber City.

Mr. Shipley was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and was retired from Johnson-Hillard, where he worked as a sheet metal mechanic. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and attended the First Apostolic Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Clyde and Lilly Wilson Shipley; three brothers, Roy, Dan and John Henry Shipley.

Survivors include his wife, Louella McConnell Shipley, of the home; his son, Scott Shipley and wife, Luann of Kingsport; daughter, Linda Holbrook of Gate City; two grandchildren, Crystal Shipley and John Holbrook; a sister, Loveta Pleasant of Mountain City; along with several nieces and nephews.

Visiting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga St., Kingsport.

Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Tommy Benton officiating.

GATE CITY, Va. — Roger Allen Shupe, 46, Gate City, Va., passed away on Tuesday (Aug. 12, 2008) at his residence.

Mr. Shupe was born in Wise County, Va. on June 12, 1962 and was the a son of Emily Greear and the late Walter Allen Shupe.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a step-brother, Marty Lee Greear.

NICKELSVILLE, Va. - Lynn O. (John) Skeen, 73, of Route 1, passed away Tuesday (April 10, 2001) at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Scott County, Va. on May 29, 1927, to the late Ira M. Skeen and Pearl Nickels Skeen Jennings.

He was retired from Mead Paper, and had served in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Faye Alley; and brother, C.W. Skeen.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Hudson Skeen, of the home; daughter Mrs. Perry (Melissa) Salyer, Nickelsville; sons, David L. Skeen and wife, Jeree, Hixson, Tenn., Tracy L. KINGSPORT — Conrad Lee "Pa" Smith, 64, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Sunday (Nov. 9, 2008) after an extended illness.
Born in San Angelo, Tex., he resided in Kingsport most of his life. Conrad served in the U.S. Army, during the Vietnam Era and retired from CitiBank in 2002. He was a former member of the Kingsport Jaycees, an active member of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children), and served on the Foster Parent Advisory Board of TRACES.
His parents, Dee and Vivian Smith, preceded him in death.

Howard Lee Smith

KINGSPORT - Howard Lee Smith, 84, of Kingsport, went home to be with his Lord Sunday (Dec. 25, 2005) at the Sunbridge – Hillside Health Care Center after a period of declining health.

Howard was born Nov. 20, 1921 in Kingsport. He was a retired foreman with the TCE Company, a member of the VFW and Eagles of Kingsport. Howard was a veteran serving during World War II with the U.S. Navy.

Howard was preceded in death by his mother, Winnie (McConnell) Smith; his eight siblings; his granddaughters, Robin and Windy Condry.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Kathleen (White) Smith of Kingsport; three daughters, Sandra Smith, Janis White and husband Ronnie, and Jennifer Smith, all of Kingsport; four granddaughters, Lisa Kiser, Ginger Horne, Tom Kiser and Angela Norton; several great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the East Lawn Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith was born in Scott County, Va. on September 3, 1922, a daughter of the late Arthur Allen and Susie Hall Casteel. She was a member of Charity Chapel Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ellie Blevins and Pannie Blevins; five brothers, Carson Casteel, Logan Casteel, Nathan Casteel, Phillip Casteel and Omar Casteel.

Surviving are her husband, Pastor John Smith Jr., Kingsport; one son and daughter-in-law, John Smith III and Michelle Smith , Elizabethton, Tenn.; one grandson, Christopher Smith , Kingsport; four sisters, Lula Ramsey, Dungannon, Louise Young, Greeneville, Jeanette Henry, Kingsport and Emilie Franklin, Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Paul Casteel, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

KNOXVILLE — Pattie Orr Snodgrass, born Feb. 29, 1916, in Jonesville, Va., to the late George Wesley and Golden Barton Orr, passed away Monday (Oct. 27, 2008) in Knoxville.

Pattie was a graduate of Virginia Tech University and a long-time resident of Gate City, Va., where she worked as an Agricultural Extension Agent serving Scott County, Va., for many years.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dale Carter Snodgrass; sister, Elizabeth Orr; brothers, George W. Orr, Jr. and Marion V. Orr.

She is survived by her son, Thomas C. Snodgrass and wife, Ellen; daughters, Elizabeth S. Spencer and husband, Mitchell, Judy S. Luttrell and husband, John; grandchildren, Janet Ayers, Gail Snodgrass, Joyce Troxler, Brita Spencer Pratt, Chris Spencer, Laura Leonard, Adam Luttrell; great-grandchildren, Katherine Givens, Mateo Troxler, Gavin Pratt and Samuel Leonard.

Rebecca Ann "Becky" (Frazier) Snyder

JOHNSON CITY - Rebecca (Becky) Ann Frazier Snyder, 60, beloved and admired wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with our Saviour on March 8, 2007 after an unexpected illness.

Mrs. Snyder served as executive housekeeper at Holiday Inn located in Johnson City for 19-plus years. She loved her family and her Lord with all her heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby and Charlie Frazier; and baby grandson, Christopher Charles Arnold.

She is survived by her husband and soul mate, Charles Snyder; three children and their spouses, Mitchal Snyder, Melissa Snyder Arnold and Denny Arnold, Adam Snyder and Misty Snyder; five grandchildren, Travis Arnold, 23; Cierra Arnold, 17; Celina Arnold, 6; Sophia Arnold, 3; Shawn Mitchal Snyder, 20; siblings and spouses, Marie Jones, Emogene Barner, June Frazier, Joy Neff, Freddie and Linda Frazier, JC and Linda Frazier, Ronnie and Cathy Frazier, Donnie Frazier; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Private visitation for the family will be on Sunday at Tetrick Funeral Services.

Billie J. Adams Spears

NORTON, Va. — Billie J. Adams Spears, 77, went home to be with the Lord on Monday (Oct. 8, 2007).

She was born to the late Clarence Ray and Amanda Lucinda (Franklin) Adams and was the widow of Jack Spears. Billie was retired from the Head Start Program.

She is survived by her sisters, Sue A. Yarhouse, Richmond, Va., Louise M. Snodgrass, Wise, Va., and Mary Doris Adams, Norton; her brothers: Jesse "Bud" Adams, Big Stone Gap, Va., and Donald Ray Adams, Norton; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ernest Duncan and the Rev. Roger Barker officiating.

Burial will follow in the Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood.

Elma Grace (Gilley) Stacy

KINGSPORT - Grace Gilley Stacy, 74, went to be with the Lord at 9 p.m. Monday (Feb. 14, 2000) in the Emergency Room at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Born in Fairview, Va., she had resided in this area since 1960. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Lilly Bledsoe Gilley. Mrs. Stacy taught elementary school in Scott County, Va. and Headstart in the Kingsport City Schools. She was a member of Bloomingdale Baptist Church.

Mrs. Stacy is preceded in death by two half sisters, Easter Bledsoe and Pearl Roller; one half brother, Hoyt Gilley.

Surviving are her husband of 52 years, George W. Stacy Jr., of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and John Goergen, Knoxville and Carol and Robert Dubay, Johnson City; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Patricia Stacy , Mount Carmel, David and Patty Stacy , Church Hill, and Mark and Toni Stacy , Bristol; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Brookshire, Norfolk, Va., Justin Stacy , Mount Carmel, Brent Stacy , Church Hill, Matthew Goergen, Knoxville, Jason Dubay, Johnson City, Christina Stacy , Paul Stacy and Luke Stacy , all of Bristol; two step grandchildren, Josh Bailey, Church Hill and Nikki Dubay, Johnson City.

H. Beecher Stallard

Gate City — H. Beecher Stallard, 70, died at his home in Erwin, Tenn., Saturday night. He was a native of Scott County and a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Stallard. He was a conductor on the L. & N. and Clinchfield Railroad, and a member of the Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p. m. Monday at Erwin with burial in Fuller Cemetery, Snowflake, Scott County.

His first wife, Mattie Hilton, died several years ago. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eliza Southers Stallard; five sons, Lawrence, Nickelsville, Buford, Erwin, Emory, Knoxville, H. B., Jr., Detroit, and Euard, Ft. Worth, Tex.; six daughters, Mrs. Charles Lay, Colinga, Calif., and Nannie, Margie, Edna, Mary Lee and Lucille, all of Erwin.

Rev. Robert Lee "Bob" Stanley

KINGSPORT — Rev. Robert Lee (Bob) Stanley, 75, went to be with the Lord on Sunday (Nov. 23, 2008) at his residence.
He was born in Shenandoah, Va. to the late William H. Stanley and Alma Crawford Stanley Osgood. He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Rev. J.C. Osgood. Bob and his family moved to Wise, Va. in the late 40’s. He attended Bob Jones Academy and graduated from Bob Jones University in Greeneville, S..C. After graduation he returned to Wise where he pastored Glamorgan Chapel Church and Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church. Bob and his parents founded and built Beverly Hills Tabernacle, an independent, evangelical church dedicated in 1964. Throughout his career, he worked in the coal mining industry, retiring from Westmoreland Coal Co. in 1984 to assume the pastorship of Beverly Hills Tabernacle. In addition to the work of the Lord, his family and friends, Bob had a love for antiques and was a proprietor at the Haggle Shop in Kingsport. Special thanks to Bob and Joyce Grills and all the staff at the Haggle Shop for "giving him a place to go play" in his later years.
Surviving are his wife of 49½ years, Jessee Lacele Collins Stanley; sons, David K. Stanley and wife, Sheila of Monument, Colo. and Donald S. Stanley and wife, Candace of LaVergne, Tenn.; sisters, Jewell J. Dodson of Waynesboro, Va. and Izetta (Gayle) Mason of Clearwater, Fla.; grandchildren, Lance Cpl. Eric Stanley, Lacey Dunkley, Lauren Stanley, Jesselyn Stanley, Logan Stanley, Katrien Stanley and Landon Stanley; several nieces, nephews and special extended family, Richard and Asley Labreque Taylor; and a host of other relatives and friends.

James W. Stapleton, 92, died Tuesday at 2:45 p. m. at the home of his brother, H. M. Stapleton, resident of Madison Street, Kingsport. He had been ill three years.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:00 a. m. at the chapel of Huff Funeral Home. The Rev. Rand Dillon will be in charge and burial will be in Collins Cemetery.

Stapleton had been a resident of Kingsport for 25years. Survivors are four brothers: H. M. and Cows Stapteton. of Kingsport, John and Tivis Stapleton of Nicklesville; two sisters; Mrs. Visic Fugate of Kingsport and Mrs. Mary Roller of Indian Springs. The body will remain at Huff Funeral Home until the hour of service.

NORTON, Va. - Rev. Charles Ray Starnes, 74, died Thursday (April 24, 2003) in Heritage Hall Health Care in Big Stone Gap, Va.

He was the former pastor of Rocky Fork Pentecostal Church and Wise Pentecostal Church.

He retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force with over 20 years of service and later retired from VICC in Coeburn, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Bud" and Martha Oxford Starnes; and a son, Jackie Ray Starnes.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Margaret Starnes, Norton, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Dwayne and Janice Starnes, Grand Rapids, Mich.; four grandchildren, Christopher Starnes, Abbey Starnes, Joe Starnes and Laurie Anderson; four great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild; two brothers, William E. Starnes Jr., Granite Valley, S.C., Tom Starnes, Mineola, Texas; one sister, Sue Moore, Wise, Va.

KINGSPORT - Zella Starnes, 75, went to be with the Lord on Friday evening (June 3, 2005) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Born in Scott County, Va., she had resided in Kingsport most of her life. Mrs. Starnes retired from Tennessee Eastman Company following 32 years of service, having worked in the Textile Fibers Division. She enjoyed playing golf and traveling.

Mrs. Starnes was a member of Ketron Memorial United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Florence Smith; two sisters, Freddie Hubble and Betty Smith; and an infant brother, Jimmy Smith.

Surviving are her husband, Willie H. Starnes, Kingsport; three sisters, Thelma Starnes and husband, Guy of Gate City, Va., Dorothy Bledsoe of Marion, Va., and Joann Fraysier and husband, Fred of Kingsport; six brothers, Charles Odell Smith of Dayton, Ohio, Billy Don Smith and wife, Devota of Gate City, Va., Paul Edward Smith and wife, Darlene of Gate City, Va., Dwight A. Willie Hascue Starnes

KINGSPORT — Willie H. Starnes, 86, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Thursday (Jan. 17, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He served in the European Theatre, 9th Infantry Division of the U. S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Starnes retired from the C. E. division of Tennessee Eastman Company as a foreman after 35 years and 11 months of service. He was a member of Ketron Memorial United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the V.F.W.

Willie enjoyed traveling and loved to play golf.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zella Smith Starnes; his parents, Bartley and Emma Starnes; a brother, Eddie H. Starnes; and two sisters, Lora Starnes Liner and Nell Starnes Egan.

Surviving are two sisters, Mary Browning, Kingsport, Allie Depew, Jonesborough; five brothers, Paul E. Starnes of Gate City, Ollin B. Starnes and wife Katherine of Fall Branch, Roy B. Starnes and wife Carol of Kingsport, Clifford D. Starnes and wife Mary Anne of Kingsport, and Mack Starnes and wife Peggy of Church Hill; a special nephew, Marcus Smith and wife Christie and their children, Anna and Christian; and several other nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

Jo Ann (Light) Steadman

FALL BRANCH — Jo Ann Steadman, 72, of the Beech Creek community, passed on to Heaven Sunday (Nov. 9, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.
She attended Van Hill Freewill Baptist Church and was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Jo Ann will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Shular Light; one son, Mark Steadman; one brother, Donnie Light; and her stepmother, Jenny Light.
Surviving are one daughter, Cindy Fields and husband, Dennis of Fall Branch; two sons, Rick Light and wife, Sandra of Kingsport, Troy Steadman of the home; a special grandson, Mark Falin; a special step-granddaughter, Tonya Fields; a special step-great-grandson, Mykael Hall; three sisters, Marie Bolton and husband, Kermit, Novell Wright, Evelyn Wilkerson; one brother, Delmas Light; a special niece, Judy Carter; and several other nieces and nephews. She is also survived by special friends, Shane Falin, Wayne Morelock, and Donna and Ronnie Arnold.

Bobbie Gertrude Stewart

Fort Blackmore—(Spl.)—Bobbie Gertrude Stewart, 19, daughter of Mrs. Maude Tate Stewart and the late Oaklie Stewart, died from a heart attack Tuesday at 1 a. m. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

She is survived by her mother, who before her marriage was Maude Tate, one brother, Calvin, three sisters, Anna, Jean, and Marie, all of Fort Blackmore, and her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ella Stewart of Kingsport.

The funeral will be at 2 o'clock Wednesday at the Stewart home, Fort Blackmore. The Rev. James A. Boatright will be in charge.

Burial will be in the nearby family cemetery.

DUNGANNON, Va. - Steven Anthony Stewart, 56, Dungannon, Va., passed away Friday afternoon (Dec. 8, 2006) in Dungannon from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

A life-long resident of Dungannon, Va., he was born Dec. 14, 1949 in Sullivan County, Tenn., a son of the late James M. and Beulah Kate Hillman Stewart. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dungannon, Va.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie Ellen Stewart, Dungannon, Va.; son, James Osborne, Wright, Wyo.; three grandchildren, Dillon and Devin Stewart and Jesse Osborne; one sister, Diane Mitchell and husband Ernest, Dungannon, Va.; former wife and mother of his children, Linda Osborne, Dungannon, Va.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours will be Tuesday (Dec. 12, 2006) from 6 to 7 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Father Roland Hautz and Rev. Ernest Mitchell officiating.

Deborah Ruth (Marshall) Strong

GATE CITY, Va. - Deborah Ruth Strong, 92, passed away peacefully Tuesday (Nov. 20, 2001) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn.

Born in the Union Temple community of Greene County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Dr. John Calvin Marshall and Minnie McCollum Marshall Ratliff.

She was a graduate of Doak High School and Tusculum College, and taught in several Greene County schools.

In 1945, she married and moved to Gate City, Va. She served as church organist for Gate City Methodist Church and First Baptist Church of Gate City. She was a member of Union Temple United Methodist Church, the Greene County and Tennessee Retired Teachers Association. Her interests included her family and researching family history.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer F. Strong; three sisters, Trula Marshall, Anna Babb and Nova Hartman; three brothers, Vivian, Cecil and Oren Marshall; her stepfather, John Ratliff.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Debby and Jack Taylor of Yuma, Va.; two grandsons and their wives, Ty and Misty Taylor of Gate City, and Brad and Rebecca Taylor of Monroe, N.C.; one great-grandson, Darren Ross Taylor of Monroe, N.C.; one brother, Robert Marshall of Greeneville; several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Paul Blessing will lead a graveside service at Union Temple Cemetery at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Friends may also call anytime at the home of the daughter in Yuma, Va.

YUMA, Va. — Dorothy Marie Stump, 70, entered into rest Monday (Nov. 10, 2008) at her daughter's residence.
She was born in Russell County, Va., to the late Woodrow Wilson Ray and Lucy Gladys Harmon.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glyn Stump; three sisters, Helen Bragg, Earline Templeton and Billie Jean Ray; brother, Danny Lynn Ray.
She was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church, Yuma, Va., and also the former owner and operator of Mountain Empire Restaurant, Weber City, Va.
Survivors include two daughters,
Glenda Sue Wade and husband, Pat, Yuma, Va., Linda Mullins Garrett, Kingsport; sister, Bernice Bartley and husband, Kenneth, Kingsport; grandchildren, Angie White and husband, Jason, Jason Wade, Michael Mullins, Miranda Mullins, Megan Garrett; step grandson, Jared Garrett; greatgrandchildren, Dakota Odle, Abran White, Caden Wade, Haley Wade, Jaden Crawford, baby great-granddaughter due in February; several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT — Jerry Shannon Summey, 37, of Kingsport, passed away Tuesday (June 24, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was of the Baptist faith and graduated from Sullivan North High School in 1990.

Jerry was employed by PMT Industries for many years and enjoyed playing pool, cards, spending time with his family, friends and good food. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all of us.

He is survived by his parents, Jerry and Judy Summey, of Kingsport; brother, Jason Lee Summey, of Kingsport; special friends, Bobby Stover and Mikki Hughes, of Kingsport; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Ralph G. Summey, Sr.

KINGSPORT — Ralph G. Summey, Sr., 66, of Kingsport, passed away suddenly on Sunday (Nov. 2, 2008) in Augusta County, Va., from injuries sustained in a tractor trailer truck accident and subsequent fire.

He was born in Scott County, Va., (Ft. Blackmore) and had lived in Kingsport most of his life. Ralph served in the U.S. Army and was employed with Candyland Express Trucking Co. and was an over the road trucker.

Ralph was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was loved by all that knew him and will be greatly missed. May God’s light shine upon your face and ease your soul.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Brickey and Lottie Summey; four brothers, Troy, Charlie, George and Ted; a sister, Gladys Dockery; and a nephew, Shannon Summey.

Survivors include his loving wife, Patricia Crawford Summey, of the home; his daughter, Vickie Nowlin and husband, Larry of Kingsport; two sons, Ralph Summey, Jr. and wife, Rove of Rogersville and Kenneth Cline of Surgoinsville; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Thompson and husband, Harold; three brothers, Jerry Summey and wife, Judy of Kingsport, Claude Summey and wife, Janice of Kingsport and Brickey (Junior) Summey and wife, Anita of Scott County, Va.; four sisters-in-law, Carol Summey of Pennsylvania, Barbara and George Calhoun, Ann and Harold Gilliam and Bessie Quenberry; brother-in-law, Jim Langrel; two special nieces, Brittany Seymour and Brooke Calhoun; special neighbor, Sandra and daughter, Kim; and several other nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga St., Kingsport.

Military graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn. conducted by the VFW Post #3382 and the Tennessee National Guard. Pallbearers will be the Military Color Guard.

Russell Dale "Russ" Summey

HICKORY, N.C. - Russell "Russ" Dale Summey, died Saturday, (Feb. 3, 2007) at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Born Nov. 1, 1963 in Kingsport, he was the son of the late George Russell Summey and Gaynell Hall Okeefer.

He was a resident for many years at Brian Center East, where he was a valuable volunteer and inspiration to all. He was a member of Tri-City Baptist Church.

Survivors include sisters and brothers-in-law, Laura Summey Dockery and husband, Scottie, of Ft. Blackmore, Va., Christal Postema and husband, Mark, of Dungannon, Va., Gloria Okeefer, of Statesville; brothers and sister-in-law, Scott Summey, of Claremont, Doug Summey and wife, Lori, of Statesville; stepfather, Michael Okeefer, of Statesville; best friend, Wanda Towery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at the Hall Family Cemetery, Route 1, Dungannon, Va.

The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Gate City Funeral Home.

William F. Summey

William Floyd Summey, 71, died at his home on Route 1, Dungannon,Va., Wednesday at 2 a.m. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. in Green Chapel at Dungannon with the Rev. J. A. Boatwright officiating.

Summey is survived by his widow, Avie Akers Summey; two sons. Earl of Fort Blackmore, Va., and Orville of Gray Station, Tenn. He is also survived by four daughters, Mrs. Bascom Owens, Mrs. Carl Perry and Mrs. J. F. Green, all of Fort Blackmore; and Miss Ella Summey of Dungannon. He is survived by one half-brother, Lee Summey, of Fort Blackmore.

Burial will be in the Carter Cemetery at Dungannon.

Ret. Sgt. Troy Lee Summey Sr.

ETTERS, Pa. -- Ret. Sgt. Troy Lee Summey Sr., 63, York Hill Road, died Wednesday (April 15, 1998) at Harrisburg Hospital, Harrisburg, Pa.

Formerly of Scott County, Va., he was a retired Army Sgt. First Class and an Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was a truck driver for Consolidated Freight and a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 430, the Good Sam's Club and the Etters V.F.W. Post. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Etters, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Brickey and Lottie Summey ; and three brothers, Charlie Summey , George Summey , and Teddy Joe Summey.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Marie Summey ; a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Phyllis Lee) Derr, Lewisberry, Pa.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Troy L. Jr. and Karen Summey , Lewisberry, Pa., and Robin A. Sr. and Rhonda Summey and Daniel A. and Judy Summey , both of New Cumberland, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Charles (Gladys) Dockery, and Mrs. Harold (Mary Edna) Thompson, both of Kingsport; four brothers and sisters-in-law, James C. and Janice Summey , Ralph and Pat Summey , and Jerry and Judy Summey , all of Kingsport, and Brickey W. Jr. and Anita Summey , Clinchport, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at James F. Stone Funeral Home, Inc., Steelton, Pa.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with a very special nephew, Sgt. Ralph Summey Jr., Ft. Campbell, Ky., assisting in the service.

Military graveside rites will follow at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemtery, Indiantown Gap, Pa.
