Dale K. Mann

DUNGANNON, Va. — Dale K. Mann, 64, entered into rest Thursday (Nov. 13, 2008).
He was born May 6, 1944 in Wise County, Va.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Paul Mann. Including his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; daughter, Kelly Marie Mann; and infant twin siblings.
Survivors include his mother, Marie Hilton Mann, Bristol, Va., formerly of Dungannon, Va.; daughter, Tracy Patrick and husband, Randy, Lebanon, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Nickey Mann and Danah Cross, Bluff City; daughter, Rhonda Mann; grandchildren, Lance Corp. Charles "Christopher" Curtis, USMC, Kings Bay, Ga., Ryan Patrick, Lebanon, Va., Jackson Mann and Lacey Mann, both of Bluff City; and Anna Marie Mann Crabtree, of Lebanon, Va., ex-wife of 32 years.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Gate City Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Father Roland Hautz of St. Patrick’s Church, Dungannon, Va.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Mann-Corder Cemetery, Dungannon, Va. The family will meet at 10 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery for the graveside service.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Gate City Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Mann family.

Gladys V. Wells Maples

NORTON, Va. — Gladys V. Maples, 90, died Monday (Nov. 3, 2008) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.

She was the widow of Jessie W. "Joe" Maples, was retired from the Norton Elementary School and was a member of the Guest River Pentecostal Church.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; a sister; a daughter, Betty Maples Mullins; two grandchildren, Scotty Dingus and Dana Mullins.

She is survived by a son Wayne Maples and his wife, Pat, Norton, Va.; daughters, Marcia Dingus and husband, Larry, Kingsport, and Kathie Scott, Norton, Va.; a brother, Ralph Wells, Pulaski, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Darrell Bolling, the Rev. Doug Scot and Curtis Dingus officiating.

Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Laurel Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Jessie Willard "Joe" Maples

NORTON, Va. - Jessie Willard "Joe" Maples , 91, died Friday (June 2, 2006) at Norton Community Hospital.

Born in Wise County, Va. to the late Jessie Wilburn and Jane Wright Maples , he was the last surviving of seven children.

Mr. Maples was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Guest River Pentecostal Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Jo Mullins, in April.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Wells Maples ; daughters, Marcia Dingus, of Kingsport, Tenn. and Kathie Scott of Norton, Va.; a son, Jessie Wayne Maples , of Norton, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery.

Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home is in charge.

Christopher Marrow

Clinchport, Va.—Funeral services for Christopher S. Marrow, 75, who died Thursday at 5 p. m. at the Holston Valley Community Hospital, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Methodist Church in charge of the Rev. E. Z. Blankenbecler. Burial will be in the Sproles Cemetery at Pattonsville.

He has no survivors.

Janice Diane (Brickey) Martin

MADISON, Miss. - Janice Brickey Martin, 51, a homemaker, died Tuesday (July 20, 2004) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Janice, a native of Weber City, Va., was a 1971 graduate of Gate City High School, where she served as the class valedictorian. She continued her education at the University of Virginia, earning her BSN in 1975 and a Masters in Nursing from the University of Texas at Galveston in 1975. Janice served a year on the faculty of the University of Texas at Galveston Nursing School.

A resident of Jackson since 1985, she was a longtime member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church, serving on the Flower Committee, Commitment Committee, and the Worship Committee. Janice was also active in the Presbyterian Women, serving as the Vice Moderator and was a member of Circle 1.

An avid artist, Janice enjoyed oil painting. She will be remembered by her family as a loving and caring, wife, mother, daughter and sister.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Rick W. Martin of Madison, Miss.; sons, Joel P. Martin and David G. Martin, both of Madison, Miss.; father and mother, Willie Mack and Vinada L. Brickey, both of Weber City, Va.; sister, Karen L. Brickey of Portsmouth, Va.; brothers, Ronald S. Brickey and his wife, Charlene and Gregory A. Brickey and his wife, Susie all of Kingsport; sister-in-law, F. Lynette Byram and her husband, Johnny of Rockwall, Tex. Janice is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland and will resume at 1 p.m. Saturday at Briarwood Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Briarwood Presbyterian Church.

A family graveside will be held at Parkway Memorial Cemetery.

Martha Ellen (Flanary) Wilson Lawson Martin

COEBURN, Va. - Martha Ellen Flanary Lawson Martin, 80, passed away Sunday, (July 1, 2007) at the Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va.

She was of the Christian faith.

She was preceded in death by a husband, Jim Lawson; two brothers, Ballard Flanary and Eugene Flanary; and a sister, Lillian Bates.

Surviving are her husband, Claude Martin; a sister-in-law, Barbara Price; nieces, JoAnna Hensley, Phyllis Green, Norma Hayes and Brenda Sloce; and nephews, Mike Flanary, Clifford Bates, Buford Bates and Greg Price.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. till time of services at 7 p.m. today at the Sturgill Funeral Home in Wise, Va.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home with Rev. Avery Carty officiating.

Burial and graveside committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Carter Cemetery in Mabe, Va. Ruhbye (Hood) Martin

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Ruhbye Martin, (nee Hood), 88, passed away on Sunday (Nov. 16, 2008) in Boca Raton, Fla., after a long and courageous battle against chronic lung disease and dementia.
The daughter of Henry T. and Nellie Lawson Hood, Ruhbye was born in Dunbar, Va., and raised in Kingsport. She attended secretarial school in Danville, Va., with her sister, Georgia and enjoyed a brief modeling carrier in New York and then traveled to Florida to work as a secretary and flight attendant for Embry-Riddle Aviation in Miami.
She married Jack Martin in 1955, and shortly thereafter, Jack joined the Air Force. Ruhbye focused her energy on raising her children and making a loving home as the family moved throughout the United States and Europe.
During 27 years as an Air Force wife, she was an active volunteer in many military clinics and hospital systems and the Squadron Wives’ Club. After she and Jack retired to San Antonio, Tex., she continued her volunteer work as a "Pink Lady" in local hospitals. She also became very involved in the Shavano Park Garden Club, serving as a Club officer and strong supporter of the Club’s "adopt a highway" program. When not volunteering, she was busy gardening, antique hunting at estate sales and baking for others.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack; nine sisters and five brothers.
She is survived by her loving family of two daughters, Carole Kain of Boca Raton, Fla., Elizabeth Martin of Boerne, Tex.; one brother, Henderson Hood, Kingsport; five grandchildren, Kristina Poirier, Deborah Kerwin, Mary Katharine Kain, Katie Chapman, Allie Chapman; and five great-grandchildren.
Her undefeatable spirit and unfailing drive to help others and love of family will be greatly missed.
Memorial services will be held in Boca Raton, Fla., on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel of St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, 100 NE Mizner Blvd., Boca Raton, Fla.
An additional memorial service will be held on Friday (Dec. 5, 2008) at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church, 410 N. Main St., Boerne, Te x .
In death Ruhbye will join her husband Jack in interment at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Tex.
In lieu of flowers and in recognition of Ruhbye’s love of children, donations may be made in her name to the St. Gregory’s or St. Helena’s Children’s Ministry Programs at the above addresses.

James Elmer "Jim" McLain Jr.

MOUNT CARMEL - James E. "Jim" McLain Jr., 53, went to be with the Lord on Sunday (Nov. 30, 2003) at Holston Valley Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. James was a special person who touched many people's lives. He was loved and adored by his loving wife, two special sons and his little angel, Julia.

Mr. McLain served in the U.S. Marines and was employed at Eastman for over 30 years in the organic chemical department. He was a legendary softball player and a well-rounded, gifted and talented athlete.

He attended Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Carmel.

Mr. McLain was preceded in death by his parents, James E. McLain Sr. and Julia Birchfield McLain; and one brother, John McLain.

Surviving are his wife, Victoria Christian McLain, of the home; sons, James E. "Jimmy" McLain III and Rodney A. McLain and wife Lisa, all of Kingsport; one special granddaughter, Julia Del-Rae McLain, Johnson City; sisters, Ann Tittle, Kansas, Patricia Smith, Franklin, Tenn., Diane Smith and husband Tony and Sarah McLain, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bill and Verdie Lee Christian, Mt. Carmel; sisters-in-law, Toni Arnold and husband Keith, Kingsport, Veronica Morton and husband David, Church Hill, and Yvonne Wagner and husband Doug, Kingsport; brother-in-law, Bill Christian and wife Carol, Kingsport; and stepmother, Opal S. McLain, Kingsport; also several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the church with the Rev. David Salley and Mitch Whisnant officiating.

Music will be provided by the Lighthouse Quartet.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Oak Hill Cemetery with Chaplain Joe W. Byrd of the American Legion presenting the American flag.

Pallbearers will be Keith Arnold, Billy Christian, David Morton, Doug Wagner, Bryan Henderson, Eddie DeLong, Jerry Weston, Arthel Salyers and Chunky Fleenor.

Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews and fellow softball teammates.

Billie M. McClellan

KINGSPORT _ Billie M. McClellan, 74, 233 Valley Street, died at 5:45 a.m. Saturday (April 29, 2000) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Born in Scott County, Va. and came to Kingsport in 1968, he was retired from the City of Kingsport (Traffic Department) after over 25 years of service.

He was a member of Way of Life Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas McClellan and Amanda Templeton McClellan; two brothers, Kenny and J.B. McClellan; five sisters, Reba, Vonia, Maxie, Gertrude and Freddie; two infant great-grandsons, Zachary and Daniel Wyrick.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Estelle Reba (Larkins) McClellan, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Mike (Mildred) Elliott and Mrs. Leonard (Pauline) Crawford, both of Kingsport; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wade McClellan and wife, Jamie, Church Hill, Larry McClellan and wife, Alice, and Bobby Wallace and wife, Julie, both of Kingsport; seven special granddaughters, Tracy, Staci, Joni, Amanda, Crystal, Jennifer, and Cheyenne; three special grandsons, Kenny, Charles, Israel; two special great-grandchildren, Mikaylah and Morgan; several special sisters and brothers-in-law; three sisters, Thelma Dean, Nickelsville, Va., Opal Blackard, Kingsport and Margaret Kilgore, Deland, Fla.

Joseph B. McClellan

Funeral services for Joseph Benjamin McClellan. 75, who died at his home in Scott County, Tuesday at5 p. m., will be held at Blair's Chapel, Scott County, near Gate City, Thursday at 2 p. m. The Rev. Rand Dillon and the Rev. Elizabeth Doan will officiate.

Survivors include: three daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Williams and Mrs. Lyda Williams of Gate City and Mrs. Charles Rogan of Clinton, Mass.: one son, Warner McClellan of Orebank; three brothers, Tom McClellan of Gate City, Sam McClellan of Louisville, Tenn., and Ransome McClellan of Los Angeles, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Ann Nash of Big Stone Gap, Mrs. Floyd Williams of Gate City, Mrs. R. W. Jennings of Gray's Station and Mrs.

B. A. Jennings of Kingsport. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dr. O. Gayle McConnell

Word has been received by relatives in Kingsport of the death of Dr. O. Gayle McConnell in an automobile accident near his home in San Jose, Cal.

Dr. McConnell was a native of Scott County, Va., and a World War I veteran. He was a graduate of Emory and Henry College and received his

M. D. degree from the University of St Louis. He had practiced his profession in West Virginia, Oregon and California.

Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Daisy Bonham of Chilhowie, Va.; four children, Mrs. John Bishop of San Francisco, Gray McConnell, Daisy B. McConnell and Andrew P. McConnell of San Jose; two grandchildren and several brothers and sisters.

Nickelsville—Mrs. Minnie Harris McConnell; 78, wife of the Late S. L. P. McConnell, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy Kilgore, here at 7:13. p. m. Monday. She was a life-long. resident of Scott County and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ap Harris. She was a member of the- Baptist church.

She is survived by two sons, U. E. McConnell, Gate City and John H. McConnell, Pittswood, Ill.; six daughters, Mrs. Roy Kilgore and Mrs. W. M. Anderson, Nickelsville; Mrs. R. F. McClellan, Gate City and Mrs. Henry Kilgore, Coburn.

Services will be held in the Morgan Chapel and burial will be in the Morgan Cemetery. The officiating pastor has not been named.

Evelyn Louise (Reed) McDavid

JOHNSON CITY - Evelyn Louise Reed McDavid, 82, went to be with the Lord suddenly Monday (May 31, 2004) at Appalachian Christian Village.

She was born in Gate City, Va. Her passion was cooking for others.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith S. McDavid; parents, Carson Reed and Mollie Dale Sampson Reed; daughter, Judy McDavid Cole; and brother, Charles Reed.

Surviving are her son, Rick McDavid, MD and wife Pam, Johnson City; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Starnes and Phyllis Culbertson; brothers, Raymond Reed, Jimmy Reed, Ralph Reed, Carl Reed, Billy Reed and Larry Reed.

Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Craig Culbertson officiating.

Keith S. McDavid

GATE CITY, Va. - Keith McDavid, 81, of 202 Darter Street, died Wednesday afternoon (April 11, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Born in Scott County, Va. (Speers Ferry), he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II and a member of the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3. He was retired from Eastman after over 42 years of service.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents, Ray McDavid and Nannie Templeton McDavid; one brother, Raymond McDavid.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Reed McDavid, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy McDavid Cole and husband, Ronald, Gate City, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Rick McDavid and wife, Pam, Gray; five grandchildren, Melissa Carico, Angela Quillen, Michele McDavid, Janee� McDavid and Ashley McDavid; three great-grandchildren; a foster son, Larry Reed, Knoxville; his foster parents, Uncle Hugh and Aunt Dale McDavid, Scott County, Va.

Albert Nicholas "Nick" McElroy

WEBER CITY, Va. - Albert Nicholas McElroy, 67, of Weber City, Va., passed away on Saturday (Nov. 15, 2008) at his residence.
Born in Norton, Va., he played for Gate City High School and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was retired from Eastman following 25 years of service and a member of First Baptist Church of Weber City. He was a loving husband, father, brother and granddad.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Paralee Hill McElroy; son, Corey McElroy.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Bellamy McElroy; daughter, Christy McElroy Bradshaw and husband, Taylor; grandsons, Nicholas Bradshaw, (twins) Peyton Bradshaw and Hunter Bradshaw, Devan McElroy and Blake McElroy; sister, Patsy McElroy Durham and husband, Roy; brother, Jim McElroy; special nieces and nephews.

Corey Howard McElroy

GATE CITY, Va. - Corey Howard McElroy, 29, of Walnut Street, went to be with the Lord early Monday morning at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was a 1995 graduate of Gate City High School where he proudly wore #70 for the Blue Devil football team. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Virginia at Wise for two years, where he lettered in football during his time there.

He was employed by Fluor-Daniel (Eastman) as a welder/pipefitter and was of the Baptist faith. He was a devoted father to his two sons.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lester and Para Lee McElroy and Ray and Bessie Bellamy.

He is survived by his sons, Devan Wayne McElroy and Blake Howard McElroy; parents, Albert Nicholas and Nancy Bellamy McElroy of Weber City, Va.; special sister and brother-in-law, Christy (McElroy) and husband Taylor Bradshaw of Gate City, Va.; three nephews, Nicholas, Hunter and Peyton; many special aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends also survive.

Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Scott County Funeral Home. The family will also receive friends at the home of his parents, 402 Holston Terrace, Weber City, Va.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor John Shepherd and Pastor Johnny Kendrick officiating.

Graveside committal services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holston View Cemetery.

It is requested that family and friends meet at the cemetery by 10:55 a.m. for those services.

Jonathan Draper McGahey

Jonathan Draper McGahey was born Dec. 18, 1878, and died Dec. 14, 1922, at the ago of 43 years, 11 months, 2G days. On June 5, 1898, he was married to Miss Lula V. Myers, and to this union two children were born—Mrs. J. M. Hart of Detroit, Mich., and L. Smith McGahey of Kingsport, Trim. Bro. McGahey was a member of our church at Webber's Chapel, on the Gate City circuit but for the last few years he was a regular attendant at our Broad Street church in Kingsport. He was a good man, whom the community honored for his sterling qualities of manhood. He was a faithful husband and father", a lover of his home. He loved the church, and regarded the vows and relations of church membership as very sacred.

While discharging the duties of his position, he fell through an open elevator shaft and died almost instantly from the injuries sustained. He had no time for death-bed repentance, nor did he need it, for his preparation was made in his daily life. His funeral was conducted by the writer at Morrison's Chapel on Dec. 17, and he was laid to rest by brother Odd Follows. For this good man, death had no sting, the grave no victory.

Bobby Lynn McGathey

KINGSPORT — Bobby Lynn McGathey, 54, of Kingsport, passed away unexpectedly Monday (Oct. 13, 2008) at his residence.

Born in Sullivan County on June 21, 1954, he was the son of the late Emmett McGathey and Hattie Lois Moore. He had resided in this area most life. He was a retired business owner operator.

Bob will be remembered as a loving husband, daddy, papaw, brother and friend. He loved his family, always providing for their needs before his own. Bob found joy in the accomplishments of his children especially his son, Carl’s football career.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son, Anthony Keith Shaffer in 2005; and a special uncle, Kenneth Stapleton.

Survivors include his wife, Neashao Shaffer McGathey of the home; one daughter, Rebecca Lawson and husband, Justin of Rogersville; one son, Carl Edward McGathey of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Joey, Chris, Makennah and Alix; two brothers, Steve McGathey and wife, Brenda of Kingsport and Roger McGathey of Maine; four sisters, Ada Stapleton, Cathy DeVault, Betty Henry and Patsy Bracken, all of Kingsport; several nieces, nephews; and uncle, Jack McGaha.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at East Lawn Funeral Home and at other hours at the residence.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the chapel with the Rev. Robert Cole officiating.

Burial will follow graveside services at 11 a.m. Friday in East Lawn Memorial Park’s Christus Garden.

Pallbearers will be family and friends. Those attending the committal services are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:45 a.m. Friday and then proceed to the cemetery.

Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the family.

Dovie (Stapleton) Bishop McMurray

KINGSPORT — Dovie Bishop McMurray, 89, of Kingsport, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday (Nov. 14, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born in Buffalo, S.C., Dovie had been a resident of Kingsport for most of her life and was a member of Lewis Lane Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard Patton Bishop, Sr.; son, Leonard P. Bishop, Jr.; second husband, Walter McMurray; mother, Susan Stapleton; sisters, Della Robinson, Lula Summersville and Virgie Fleenor; brothers, Barnett Stapleton and Lester "Doc" Stapleton.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy Dixon and husband, John; son, Harold Bishop and wife, Susan; five grandchildren, Melissa Light, Lori Stokes, Trevor Bishop, Amanda Bishop and Melanie Bishop; step-granddaughter, Stephanie Rose; five great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport, Tenn .
A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. J.W. Depew and Rev. Kenny Hammonds officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Liberty Hill Cemetery, Mount Carmel, Tenn.

Walter B. McMurray

KINGSPORT - Walter B. McMurray, 88, of Wexford House, went to be with the Lord Sunday (June 11, 2000) at Wexford House after an extended illness.

He was born in Scott County, Va. and lived in Kingsport most of his life. He retired from the S. & M. Division of the Tennessee Eastman Company after 40 years of service.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille McMurray.

Surviving are his wife, Dovie McMurray; two daughters, Ivolene (Iva) Arrington and Eva Pendergrass, both of Kingsport; two sons, Don McMurray, Kingsport and Clarence McMurray, Lawrenceville, Ga.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Hubert McMurray, Bristol; two half brothers, Ralph McMurray and Eddie McMurray, both of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Funeral Home and also at the home of Jim and Iva Arrington, 159 Woodmont Ave.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Joe W. Byrd officiating.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

C. Wallace (Wally) McNew

CHICAGO, Ill. — C. Wallace (Wally) McNew, 57, passed away after an extended illness on Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2008) at his home in Chicago, Ill.
Born in Kingsport on April 12, 1951, he was a son of the late James R. McNew and Iona Rhoten McNew.
He is survived by two daughters, Meredith McNew and Erin Morgan and husband, Ben of Birmingham, Ala.; three sisters, Shirley M. Nichols and husband,
Doug of Kingsport, Thelma M. Shupe and husband, Richard of Lynchburg, Va., and DeLois A. Connell and husband, Frank of Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, James H. McNew and wife, Rosalind of Kansas City, Mo., R. Wayne McNew of Kingsport and Eugene H. McNew and wife, Dinah of Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
Wally was a 1969 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and attended East Tennessee State. For a number of years, Wally was a member of the Castaways band, a nine-member group which was formed while he was a student at Ross N. Robinson Junior High. While in college, he commuted from East Tennessee State to practice with the group and attend band engagements. He later worked as a producer for WKPT.
While residing in Illinois, Wally worked as a direct sales representative for RCN Chicago, a provider of bundled telecommunications services. While employed at RCN, Wally received many incentive awards for exceeding sales goals.
A talented musician who loved to perform, Wally is also remembered for his quick wit, his keen sense of humor and his engaging personality.
Funeral services will be held in Chicago, Ill. Plans for a memorial service to be held in Kingsport for family and friends to celebrate Wally’s life are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.

James Howard McNew

DUFFIELD, Va. — James Howard McNew, 57, entered into rest July 27, 2008 at his residence.

He was born in Sullivan County on Oct. 27, 1950 to the late Henry Eskel McNew and Rachel Babb McNew. Including his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant son, Henry Clinton McNew.

Mr. McNew worked as a group leader for 32 years at the Kingsport Foundry. He enjoyed spending time with his mules, Ruby and Pearl and his dog, Mikie, as well as all of his wagon train friends.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy McNew, of the home, Rye Cove, Va.; two daughters, Leslie Brooke McNew and Rachel Eileen McNew, both of Rye Cove, Va.; mother-in-law, Maxie Starnes, Lynn Garden; god-daughter, Bambi Ramey, Rye Cove, Va.; brothers and sisters of the heart, Rita Perry, Marcella Osborne, Fay Hass, June Cassell, Murill, Sherill, Dearl, Earl, Denny, Benny, Leon, Gary and Phil Hass.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Weber City, also a 50 year member of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Lee McNutt; son, Larry Gene McNutt; parents, Wiley and Mary Hensley; brother, Kenneth Glenn Hensley; sister, Glenna Hensley League.

She is survived by her sisters, Georgia Hensley Harper and husband, Ezra, Shirley Joan Hensley Parker and husband, Jack, all of Hilton; brothers, Earl Hensley, of Weber City, Cyril Hensley and wife, Mildred, of Kingsport, several nieces and nephews.

WEBER CITY, Va. - Lee McNutt, 94, North Dogwood Drive, departed this life Thursday (July 14, 2005).

He was born in Hiltons, Va. and lived most of his life in Weber City, Va. He retired from the Tennessee Eastman Company after 40 years of service.

Lee was a member of the First Baptist Church of Weber City and was very active in his church. He belonged to Catlett Masonic Lodge #35 of Gate City, Va., and was treasurer of the lodge for 43 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Patton and Annie Weaver McNutt; one son, Larry Gene McNutt; three sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are his wife, Iva Nelle McNutt, of the home; and several nieces and nephews.Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 6:45 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Weber City, Va. The family will also receive guests at the home, 107 N. Dogwood Drive, Weber City, Va.

Albert Henry McPherson

BLACKWATER, Va. — Albert Henry McPherson, 69, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center in the dialysis unit.

He was a born again Christian at an early age and a faithful member of the Sarepta Missionary Baptist Church. He served as a deacon for more than 40 years. He retired from Pak-Mor Manufacturing in Duffield, Va. He was an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Asbury and Emma Orick McPherson; three brothers, William "Willie" McPherson, Lloyd McPherson and Olin McPherson; three sisters, Gladys Peters, Marie McPherson and Leora Huff.

Charles "Chuck" Meade

KINGSPORT — Charles "Chuck" Meade, 39, went to be with his family and the Lord unexpectedly Thursday (Oct. 23, 2008).

He served in the U. S. Navy from 1989 to 1993 aboard the USS Hunley AS-31 as an A Bosen Mate 3. Chuck was a manager at White’s Foods in Kingsport. He had also worked at Food Lion in Church Hill and Hog Wild in Kingsport. His hobbies included NASCAR, computers, and football.

Chuck was a loving father, son, grandson, brother, and uncle. He will be loved and missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Meade; maternal grandparents, Frank Pickens Sr. and Iona Cody Pickens; and paternal grandfather, James Lee Meade.

Survivors include one daughter, Desiree Lynn Meade of Howell, Mich.; one son, Charles Logan Meade of Church Hill; his mother, Sandra Kay Meade; sister, Susanne Meade; brother, Jeff "Shorty" Meade and wife Lois; paternal grandmother, Abbie Meade, all of Kingsport; nieces and nephews, Alexis Meade, Kayla Robinson, Montana Meade, Shawna Meade, and Tristan Robinson.

James Lee Meade

James Lee Meade was b. in Lee Co, but his Meade and Jennings ancestors moved from Scott Co to Lee Co.

KINGSPORT - J.L. Meade, 78, Watauga Street, went to be with his Lord on Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) surrounded by family and friends.

He was born Sept. 9, 1923 in Lee County, Va., and resided in Kingsport most of his life.

Jim was a very dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Kingsport. As his ministry and the love of his church, he was a watchman before and after services on Sundays and Wednesday nights.

He was the owner of Meades Concrete Products, and retired at the Mead Corporation after 32 years of service.

He was a sergeant for more than five years overseas during World War II.

Mr. Meade was a loving husband, father and papaw. He lived a long, happy life and always had a helping hand for anyone who needed it. He loved his family, friends and all who knew him. He was a good-hearted Christian. Because of his love for the Lord, he donated land to the Sullivan Baptist Association for a retreat center.

He was the son of the late William and Theoe Meade in Pennington Gap, Va.

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Abbie Louise Meade; and a son, Charles "Chuck" Edward Meade; and three brothers, R.L., Raymond and John Meade.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Abbie Mae Meade; daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and Harold Nau; son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Tonya Meade; daughter-in-law, Kay Meade, all of Kingsport; three brothers, Bill and Robert Meade of Kingsport, Joseph Meade of California; five grandchildren, Erin and Amber Nau, Charles, Jeff and Suzanne Meade; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; also special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Glenda Sue (Pearcy) Miller

KINGSPORT - Glenda Sue Pearcy Miller, 53, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday (July 21, 2002) at her home following a lengthy battle with lung cancer.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, and will be missed by all who knew her.

Glenda was born in Sullivan County and lived in Kingsport her entire life. She attended Lynn View High School and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School.

She was a previous member of the Holston Valley Hospital Auxiliary. Prior to her illness she was employed by Caldwell Banker Real Estate.

Glenda was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church and attended Gravely Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Teeny Sutherland Pearcy; and her father Echol E. Pearcy.

Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Claude Miller of the home; daughter, Lisa Hurd and husband Gerald, Mount Carmel; grandsons Colby, Avery and Grayson Hurd; sisters, Margaret Crawford and husband Glenn, Kathy White and husband Charles; brothers, Harold "Bud" Pearcy and wife Sandy, Dennis Mike Pearcy, and Tracy Pearcy and wife Debbie, all of Kingsport; nieces, Heather Doub and Sonya Baker; nephews, Steve Crawford, Travis Crawford and Lance Pearcy.

Harvey Jack Ellis Miller

WISE, Va. — Harvey Jack Ellis Miller, 84, passed away Monday (Nov. 3, 2008) at his home in Wise, Va. surround by his loving family.

He was a Christian, attending the Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church and was a mechanic and owner of Jack Miller and Sons for 33 years. He was a Veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne, was a Paratrooper and a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Mamie Ellis Miller; a grandson, Adam Miller; and several brothers and sisters.

KINGSPORT — God called and Kemper James Million, a born-again Christian, answered on Feb. 12, 2008, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving wife, children and a host of friends and angels.

Kemper was born Oct. 5, 1937, in Sullivan County and was the son of Joseph James Million and Clarice Erwin Million. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane Casteel and Kate Williams; three brothers, Ronnie, T.R. and Rickey Million.

He was a faithful member of Freedom Independent Missionary Baptist Church, Mount Carmel.

He was born July 4, 1954, in Sullivan County, Tenn., a son of Clarice Ervin Million and the late Joe Million. He was a 1972 graduate of Ketron High School and was a machine operator at Quebecor Printing.

KINGSPORT — Elsie Elizabeth Bass Monroe, 100, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning (Nov. 12, 2008) at her residence.
She was born Dec. 23, 1907 in New Canton, Hawkins County to Isaac Newton and Minnie Boyd Bass.
Mrs. Monroe attended Broadview Street Church in Lynn Garden all of her adult life and played the piano for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Frank Dewey Monroe; four sisters, Mary Ruth Bass, Mae Clevenger, Hattie Price and Gertie Forbes; six brothers, John, Spurgeon, Franklin, Charles Elmer, Wade, and Jessie Bass; one granddaughter, Teresa King; and one grandson, Rusty Moore.
Surviving are two daughters, Beatrice Monk and Alma June King; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 17 great-greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Hattie Lois (Stapleton) McGathey Moore

KINGSPORT - Hattie Lois Moore, 71, left this life peacefully on Friday (June 14, 2002) to her eternal resting place with our Heavenly Father where she will forever be free from the pain and suffering she had endured for the past four years from the complications of diabetes.

She was owner and operator of Chuck's Drive In for 25 years, retiring in 1997.

She was a wonderful, loving mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister and friend to all. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Ms. Moore was preceded in death by her first husband, Emmett McGathey; her parents, Kainey and Monnie Stapleton; an infant sister; brothers, Kenneth, Kainey Jr.; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Surviving are her children: daughters, Ada Stapleton, Patsy (Pete) Bracken, Cathy Carter Devault and Betty Henry; sons, Steve and wife Brenda McGathey, Bobby and wife Neoshia McGathey, all of Kingsport, and Roger McGathey and special friend Mark Spear of Cincinnati, Ohio; sister, Mary Fraysier and husband Willie (Bill), Gate City, Va.; grandchildren, Rodney, Mark and Clark Stapleton, Robin Hulse, Scotty Carter, Rebecca McGathey, Brian Henry, Jenny Herron, Steven McGathey, Carl McGathey and Anthony Chaffer, all of Kingsport, and Michael and Christy McGathey of Ft. Virginia is my 2nd cousin as a Quillin descendant from Scott Co.

Josephine Virginia Moore, Age 87, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 12, 2008.

Josephine retired July 1986 from the Delaware National Guard. She also worked part time at Asbury United Methodist Church Day Care and Kindergarten for many years. She was a long time member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry R. Moore; her parents, the Rev. Henry G. and Grace Holdway and her brothers, Henry, Howard, and Charles. She will be sadly missed by all of her family including her son, David G. and his wife Jennifer C. Moore of Wilmington; her granddaughter, Robin Brabson Christopher of Townsend, DE; her grandson, Curtis J. Moore of Newport, DE; her brother, Robert Holdway and his wife Millie of Wilmington, DE; her sister, Betty Jean Philips and her husband, William L. of Wilmington, DE, and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 7-9 pm, at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Road. The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 am, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

GATE CITY, Va. - Lou Ellen Moore, 77, of the Cowans Branch community, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ late Monday evening (Sept. 5, 2005) at her residence with her family by her side.

A native of Scott County, Va., she was born a daughter of the late William "Bill" and Minnie Lane Williams on Jan. 9, 1928. She was a homemaker and attended Cowans Branch Missionary Baptist Church along with many other churches in the community as long as her health permitted.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walker Blaine Moore Jr. (2004); son, Michael Danny Moore; sisters, Jean Keegan, Ruby Blessing, Dora Stokes and Lillian Spivey; brother, Ray Williams.

Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joe Walker Moore of the home, David Lynn Moore and wife Linda of Kingsport, Gary Wayne Moore and wife Pauline "Polly" of Church Hill; three grandchildren, Whitney Moore of Kingsport, Angela Cassell of Mount Carmel, and Logan Blaine of Kingsport; one great-grandson, Hayden Seth Cassell of Mount Carmel; two sisters, Josephine Morrison and husband William of Gate City, Mary Alice Willis of Charlotte, N.C.; special friend, Betty Ryans of Jonesborough; special caregiver, Linda Clevenger, thank you for two years of care and comfort for our mother; several nieces, nephews, cousins and others.

Walker Blaine Moore Jr.

GATE CITY, Va. - Walker Blaine Moore Jr., 82, of the Cowan's Branch community, went to be with the Lord early Tuesday morning (Nov. 23, 2004) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol after a lengthy illness.

A native of Hawkins County, he was born Nov. 20, 1922, the son of the late Walker Blaine and Nettie Wininger Moore Sr. He was a member of the Cowan's Branch Missionary Baptist Church and was a well-known local business man and a friend to all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a warm, kind and affectionate person. His charm and personality was a treasured gift from God.

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and ginseng hunting. He began his work years at Tennessee Eastman Company and moved on to Holston Defense. He eventually became the owner-operator of Moore Monument Company in Kingsport for over 30 years. He and his son Joe also owned and operated the Moore Farm Supply for a period of 10 years. He was also instrumental in founding the WDUF radio station in Duffield, Va.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Danny Moore; two brothers, Harold Moore and Paul E. Moore.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Lou Ellen Moore of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joe Walker Moore of the home, David Lynn Moore and wife Linda of Kingsport, Gary Wayne Moore and wife Pauline "Polly" of Church Hill; two sisters, Beulah Kate (Shelton) Phillips of Yuma, Grace Virginia Shelton of Cowan's Branch; three grandchildren, Whitney Moore, Angela Cassell and Logan Blaine; one great-grandson, Seth Cassell; a niece, several nephews, cousins and a host of other family members along with many friends also survive.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cowan's Branch Missionary Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Charles K. Mullns, 53, of Gate City, Route 3, will be held at 3:30 p. m. Thursday in the chapel of the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home. Burial will be at Gunnings Cemetery.

Mullins, a veteran of World War I and a former railroad engineer, drowned early Tuesday morning in the North Fork of the Holston River near Warm Springs, Va. He had been on a fishing party.

Members of Hammond Post No. 3 of the American Legion will turn out Thursday to give Mullins, who was a member, a military funeral.

DUFFIELD, Va. - James D. Mullins, 67, died Monday (Oct. 22, 2001) at his residence.

Born in Scott County, Va., he was a son of the late Thomas E. and Laura Harris Mullins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kyle Mullins and Thomas E. Mullins Jr.; and two sisters, Marie Dishner and Lucille Dishner.

Edward Lee Murray

KINGSPORT - Edward Lee Murray, 94, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Feb. 15, 2007) at Wexford House following a brief illness.

He was born in Surrey County, Va., and later moved from Eastern Virginia to Scott County, Va., to serve in the Civilian Conservation Corp during the Great Depression.

He moved to Kingsport to work at Holston Defense and retired with Eastman following 33 years of employment. He was raised on a farm and continued to enjoy farming and raising cattle and horses. Mr. Murray was a member of First Baptist Church in Kingsport for over 60 years.

He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 53 years, Avis Runyon Murray; parents, Ned and Maggie Murray; and one brother, Leslie Murray.

Surviving are two daughters Janet Anderson, of Blountville, Linda Bierley and husband Gordon, of Cincinnati; four grandchildren, Kimberly Griffin, of Winter Park, Fla., Mary Anderson, of Blountville, Stephanie Bruemmer and Suzanne Summer, both of Cincinnati; four great-grandchildren, Donald, Stephen, Michael, and Caleigh; two nephews, Wayne Murray, Penman Gilliam; one niece, Jane Braillesford; and a special friend, Lettie Sivert.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 17, 2007) in the Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating.

Burial will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Maxie Neeley

WEBER CITY, Va. — Maxie Neeley, 92, Weber City, passed away Monday (Dec. 1, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Scott County, Va., and retired from Intermountain Telephone Company. Miss Neeley was a member of Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church.
Her parents and 10 siblings preceded her in death.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to Morrison Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 2019 Chapel Drive, Kingsport, Tenn. 37665.

Eddie Dean Neff

KINGSPORT — Eddie Dean Neff, 49, of Kingsport, passed away suddenly on Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County (Kingsport).

Eddie was preceded in death by his father, Otto Neff; and his sister, Peggy Sue Neff.

Survivors include his mother, Joy Frazier Neff; his son, Jason Neff and wife, Jamie; a grandson, Ian Neff; two sisters, Donna Neff and Onita Neff, all of Kingsport; a brother, Tommy Neff and wife, Mary Ann of Bristol, Va.; along with five nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Gardners Chapel Cemetery, Hiltons, Va., conducted by Jason Neff and Ronald Frazier. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12 noon.

Pallbearers will be his family and friends.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport is serving the Neff family.

Fred W. Neff

PINEY FLATS, Tenn. - Fred W. Neff, 75, entered into rest on Wednesday (Aug. 11, 1999) at Greystone Health Care Center, Blountville.

Mr. Neff was born in Scott County, Va. on February 24, 1924 a son of the late Cummings G. and Cora Sanders Neff.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Brillar Neff and two brothers, Claude and Otto Neff.

He is survived by one sister, Tempie Hagy, Fort Blackmore, Va.; two half-brothers, Charles Leo Horne, Piney Flats and Bennie Horne, Uba City, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Gate City Funeral Home.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Wrightly Salling and the Rev. Mack Harr officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Artemus Andrew "Andy" New

KINGSPORT - Artemus Andrew "Andy" New, of 1449 Carolina Avenue, passed away Wednesday (June 11, 2003) in Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired from Holston Defense Corp. after 33 years of service.

Mr. New was of the Baptist faith.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Thomas James New and Ettie New; brother, Clarence New; and sister, Minnie Flowers.

Surviving are his wife, Rebecca New, Kingsport; son, Terry Lynn New and wife, Glenda, Kingsport; stepdaughters, Amy Green and Jamie Maples; stepson, Robin Green, all of Smithville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, April Smith and Amber Allen and husband, Charles; step-grandchildren, Macy, Mandy, Cody, Megan and Garrett; one great-grandchild, Alexis Allen; two sisters, Ruby Carter and Shirley Cowden, both of Kingsport; two brothers, Arvel New and Willard New, both of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes, downtown Kingsport.

Services will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post #3382 of the VFW.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
