Dale K. Mann DUNGANNON, Va. — Dale K. Mann, 64,
entered into rest Thursday (Nov. 13, 2008). Kingsport Times-News Gladys V. Wells Maples NORTON, Va. — Gladys V. Maples, 90, died Monday (Nov. 3, 2008) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap. She was the widow of Jessie W. "Joe" Maples, was retired from the Norton Elementary School and was a member of the Guest River Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death by three brothers; a sister; a daughter, Betty Maples Mullins; two grandchildren, Scotty Dingus and Dana Mullins. She is survived by a son Wayne Maples and his wife, Pat, Norton, Va.; daughters, Marcia Dingus and husband, Larry, Kingsport, and Kathie Scott, Norton, Va.; a brother, Ralph Wells, Pulaski, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Darrell Bolling, the Rev. Doug Scot and Curtis Dingus officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Laurel Grove Cemetery. Submitted by Don Lane Jessie Willard "Joe" Maples NORTON, Va. - Jessie Willard "Joe" Maples , 91, died Friday (June 2, 2006) at Norton Community Hospital. Born in Wise County, Va. to the late Jessie Wilburn and Jane Wright Maples , he was the last surviving of seven children. Mr. Maples was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was a member of the Guest River Pentecostal Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Jo Mullins, in April. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Wells Maples ; daughters, Marcia Dingus, of Kingsport, Tenn. and Kathie Scott of Norton, Va.; a son, Jessie Wayne Maples , of Norton, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home chapel. Marrow, 75, who died Thursday at 5 p. m. at the Holston Valley Community Hospital, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Methodist Church in charge of the Rev. E. Z. Blankenbecler. Kingsport News; May 20, 1944 Janice Diane (Brickey) Martin MADISON, Miss. - Janice Brickey Martin, 51, a homemaker, died Tuesday (July 20, 2004) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Janice, a native of Weber City, Va., was a 1971 graduate of Gate City High School, where she served as the class valedictorian. She continued her education at the University of Virginia, earning her BSN in 1975 and a Masters in Nursing from the University of Texas at Galveston in 1975. Janice served a year on the faculty of the University of Texas at Galveston Nursing School. A resident of Jackson since 1985, she was a longtime member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church, serving on the Flower Committee, Commitment Committee, and the Worship Committee. Janice was also active in the Presbyterian Women, serving as the Vice Moderator and was a member of Circle 1. An avid artist, Janice enjoyed oil painting. She will be remembered by her family as a loving and caring, wife, mother, daughter and sister. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Rick W. Martin of Madison, Miss.; sons, Joel P. Martin and David G. Martin, both of Madison, Miss.; father and mother, Willie Mack and Vinada L. Brickey, both of Weber City, Va.; sister, Karen L. Brickey of Portsmouth, Va.; brothers, Ronald S. Brickey and his wife, Charlene and Gregory A. Brickey and his wife, Susie all of Kingsport; sister-in-law, F. Lynette Byram and her husband, Johnny of Rockwall, Tex. Janice is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was of the Christian faith. She was preceded in death by a husband, Jim Lawson; two brothers, Ballard Flanary and Eugene Flanary; and a sister, Lillian Bates. Surviving are her husband, Claude Martin; a sister-in-law, Barbara Price; nieces, JoAnna Hensley, Phyllis Green, Norma Hayes and Brenda Sloce; and nephews, Mike Flanary, Clifford Bates, Buford Bates and Greg Price. away on Sunday (Nov. 16, 2008) in Boca Raton, Fla., after a long and
courageous battle against chronic lung disease and dementia. Kingsport Times-News James Elmer "Jim" McLain Jr. MOUNT CARMEL - James E. "Jim" McLain Jr., 53, went to be with the Lord on Sunday (Nov. 30, 2003) at Holston Valley Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. James was a special person who touched many people's lives. He was loved and adored by his loving wife, two special sons and his little angel, Julia. Mr. McLain served in the U.S. Marines and was employed at Eastman for over 30 years in the organic chemical department. He was a legendary softball player and a well-rounded, gifted and talented athlete. He attended Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Carmel. Mr. McLain was preceded in death by his parents, James E. McLain Sr. and Julia Birchfield McLain; and one brother, John McLain. Surviving are his wife, Victoria Christian McLain, of the home; sons, James E. "Jimmy" McLain III and Rodney A. Born in Scott County, Va. and came to Kingsport in 1968, he was retired from the City of Kingsport (Traffic Department) after over 25 years of service. He was a member of Way of Life Baptist Church. McClellan; five sisters, Reba, Vonia, Maxie, Gertrude and Freddie; two infant great-grandsons, Zachary and Daniel Wyrick. Gayle McConnell in an automobile accident near his home in San Jose, Cal. Dr. McConnell was a native of Scott County, Va., and a World War I veteran. He was a graduate of Emory and Henry College and received his M. D. degree from the University of St Louis. He had practiced his profession in West Virginia, Oregon and California. Kingsport Times-News Corey Howard McElroy GATE CITY, Va. - Corey Howard McElroy, 29, of Walnut Street, went to be with the Lord early Monday morning at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a 1995 graduate of Gate City High School where he proudly wore #70 for the Blue Devil football team. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Virginia at Wise for two years, where he lettered in football during his time there. He was employed by Fluor-Daniel (Eastman) as a welder/pipefitter and was of the Baptist faith. He was a devoted father to his two sons. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lester and Para Lee McElroy and Ray and Bessie Bellamy. He is survived by his sons, Devan Wayne McElroy and Blake Howard McElroy; parents, Albert Nicholas and Nancy Bellamy McElroy of Weber City, Va.; special sister and brother-in-law, Christy (McElroy) and husband Taylor Bradshaw of Gate City, Va.; three nephews, Nicholas, Hunter and Peyton; many special aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends also survive. Kingsport Times-News Jonathan Draper McGahey Jonathan Draper McGahey was born Dec. 18, 1878, and died Dec. 14, 1922, at the ago of 43 years, 11 months, 2G days. On June 5, 1898, he was married to Miss Lula V. Myers, and to this union two children were born—Mrs. J. M. Hart of Detroit, Mich., and L. Smith McGahey of Kingsport, Trim. Bro. McGahey was a member of our church at Webber's Chapel, on the Gate City circuit but for the last few years he was a regular attendant at our Broad Street church in Kingsport. He was a good man, whom the community honored for his sterling qualities of manhood. He was a faithful husband and father", a lover of his home. He loved the church, and regarded the vows and relations of church membership as very sacred.While discharging the duties of his position, he fell through an open elevator shaft and died almost instantly from the injuries sustained. He had no time for death-bed repentance, nor did he need it, for his preparation was made in his daily life. His funeral was conducted by the writer at Morrison's Chapel on Dec. 17, and he was laid to rest by brother Odd Follows. For this good man, death had no sting, the grave no victory. M. A. Born in Sullivan County on June 21, 1954, he was the son of the late Emmett McGathey and Hattie Lois Moore. He had resided in this area most life. He was a retired business owner operator. Bob will be remembered as a loving husband, daddy, papaw, brother and friend. He loved his family, always providing for their needs before his own. Bob found joy in the accomplishments of his children especially his son, Carl’s football career. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son, Anthony Keith Shaffer in 2005; and a special uncle, Kenneth Stapleton. Survivors include his wife, Neashao Shaffer McGathey of the home; one daughter, Rebecca Lawson and husband, Justin of Rogersville; one son, Carl Edward McGathey of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Joey, Chris, Makennah and Alix; two brothers, Steve McGathey and wife, Brenda of Kingsport and Roger McGathey of Maine; four sisters, Ada Stapleton, Cathy DeVault, Betty Henry and Patsy Bracken, all of Kingsport; several nieces, nephews; and uncle, Jack McGaha. He was born in Scott County, Va. and lived in Kingsport most of his life. He retired from the S. & M. Division of the Tennessee Eastman Company after 40 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille McMurray. after an extended illness on Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2008) at his home in Chicago,
Ill. Kingsport Times-News James Howard McNew DUFFIELD, Va. — James Howard McNew, 57, entered into rest July 27, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Sullivan County on Oct. 27, 1950 to the late Henry Eskel McNew and Rachel Babb McNew. Including his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant son, Henry Clinton McNew. Mr. McNew worked as a group leader for 32 years at the Kingsport Foundry. He enjoyed spending time with his mules, Ruby and Pearl and his dog, Mikie, as well as all of his wagon train friends. to be with his family and the Lord unexpectedly Thursday (Oct. 23,
2008). He served in the U. S. Navy from 1989 to 1993 aboard the
USS Hunley AS-31 as an A Bosen Mate 3. Chuck was a manager at White’s
Foods in Kingsport. He had also worked at Food Lion in Church Hill and
Hog Wild in Kingsport. His hobbies included NASCAR, computers, and
football. Chuck was a loving father, son, grandson, brother, and
uncle. He will be loved and missed by all. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward
Meade; maternal grandparents, Frank Pickens Sr. and Iona Cody Pickens;

Ancestors KINGSPORT - J.L. Meade, 78, Watauga Street, went to be with his Lord on Saturday (Feb. 16, 2002) surrounded by family and friends. He was born Sept. 9, 1923 in Lee County, Va., and resided in Kingsport most of his life. Jim was a very dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Kingsport. As his ministry and the love of his church, he was a watchman before and after services on Sundays and Wednesday nights. He was the owner of Meades Concrete Products, and retired at the Mead Corporation after 32 years of service. He was a sergeant for more than five years overseas during World War II. Mr. Meade was a loving husband, father and papaw. He lived a long, happy life and always had a helping hand for anyone who needed it. He loved his family, friends and all who knew him. He was a good-hearted Christian. Because of his love for the Lord, he donated land to the Sullivan Baptist Association for a retreat center. He was the son of the late William and Theoe Meade in Pennington Gap, Va. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Abbie Louise Meade; and a son, Charles "Chuck" Edward Meade; and three brothers, R.L., Raymond and John Meade. Josephine retired July 1986 from the Delaware National Guard. She also worked part time at Asbury United Methodist Church Day Care and Kindergarten for many years. She was a long time member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry R. Moore; her parents, the Rev. Henry G. and Grace Holdway and her brothers, Henry, Howard, and Charles. She will be sadly missed by all of her family including her son, David G. and his wife Jennifer C. Moore of Wilmington; her granddaughter, Robin Brabson Christopher of Townsend, DE; her grandson, Curtis J. A native of Scott County, Va., she was born a daughter of the late William "Bill" and Minnie Lane Williams on Jan. 9, 1928. She was a homemaker and attended Cowans Branch Missionary Baptist Church along with many other churches in the community as long as her health permitted. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walker Blaine Moore Jr. (2004); son, Michael Danny Moore; sisters, Jean Keegan, Ruby Blessing, Dora Stokes and Lillian Spivey; brother, Ray Williams. Kingsport Times-News Walker Blaine Moore Jr. GATE CITY, Va. - Walker Blaine Moore Jr., 82, of the Cowan's Branch community, went to be with the Lord early Tuesday morning (Nov. 23, 2004) at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol after a lengthy illness. A native of Hawkins County, he was born Nov. 20, 1922, the son of the late Walker Blaine and Nettie Wininger Moore Sr. He was a member of the Cowan's Branch Missionary Baptist Church and was a well-known local business man and a friend to all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a warm, kind and affectionate person. His charm and personality was a treasured gift from God. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and ginseng hunting. He began his work years at Tennessee Eastman Company and moved on to Holston Defense. He eventually became the owner-operator of Moore Monument Company in Kingsport for over 30 years. He and his son Joe also owned and operated the Moore Farm Supply for a period of 10 years. He was also instrumental in founding the WDUF radio station in Duffield, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Danny Moore; two brothers, Harold Moore and Paul E. Moore. Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Lou Ellen Moore of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joe Walker Moore of the home, David Lynn Moore and wife Linda of Kingsport, Gary Wayne Moore and wife Pauline "Polly" of Church Hill; two sisters, Beulah Kate (Shelton) Phillips of Yuma, Grace Virginia Shelton of Cowan's Branch; three grandchildren, Whitney Moore, Angela Cassell and Logan Blaine; one great-grandson, Seth Cassell; a niece, several nephews, cousins and a host of other family members along with many friends also survive. Kingsport Times-News Edward Lee Murray KINGSPORT - Edward Lee Murray, 94, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Feb. 15, 2007) at Wexford House following a brief illness. He was born in Surrey County, Va., and later moved from Eastern Virginia to Scott County, Va., to serve in the Civilian Conservation Corp during the Great Depression. He moved to Kingsport to work at Holston Defense and retired with Eastman following 33 years of employment. He was raised on a farm and continued to enjoy farming and raising cattle and horses. Mr. Murray was a member of First Baptist Church in Kingsport for over 60 years. He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 53 years, Avis Runyon Murray; parents, Ned and Maggie Murray; and one brother, Leslie Murray.
