JAMES M. DOUGHERTY OF THE VICINITY OF NICKELSVILLE, DEPARTEDTHIS LIFE MARCH THE 3RD 1883,
AGES THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS:

In referring to the dead, men generally pass over their defects, and dwell on their virtues. This trait of our nature is well becoming poor passengers of time as they hasten on to their own destination.

In the case of Brother Dougherty, I am not aware of many, if any defects in his character. From a boy he was ever the same, honest and truthful, kind and affectionate,-- loved by all.

About fourteen years ago he professed religion. Since then he lived a devoted christian (sic), never evading any of the duties assigned by the church upon him, being at the time of his death the Class-Leader of the "Sugar Tree Church", and Sabbeth (sic) school Superintendent.

He was a man of excellent sense; one of the men who compose the pillars of society in the home life of a moral community; one of the few that when death removes is missed, and at the same time hard to realize that they are gone.

The M.E. Church has lost in the death of James M. Dougherty, a true friend and supporter of her Doctrines. He attached himself to the church during the administrations of the late James W. Adams, at a time when the church was passing through the prejudices and oppositions that has made its history prominently connected with the great events of the last forty years. Friend Dougherty desired to live to see the day when the great family of Methodist would be again housed in one universal family.

One thing he lived to partly see completed, which was a house for his class to worship in.
Amoungst
(sic) the last work he did was on that house, and as it stands none of us ever see it without connecting in mind the memory of him that did so much to build it.

In life he desired that "his last moments should be his happiest." Sure enough, when that hour did come, it found him ready, and said "it was the happiest hour he had ever experienced." When his uncle, Dr. A.B. McConnell made known to him that he was dying, he said – "if this be death, it is sweet!"

He leaves a widow and four children, one of them by his first wife (a daughter of Benjamin Harris of this County) who died some eight years ago, in the Christian faith. To this little boy he enjoined upon him the importance of "living right", and by all means to never make a drunkard!

His last wife is a daughter of Wm G. McConnell of Valley Creek. To her these simple lines are not needed to awaken the memory of the departed one. But for his little ones let them be the tribute of one who intimately knew their father, and who among thousands of men found no truer friend personally or a more devout supporter for the right, than our deceased brother.

The funeral of this good man will be preaced at the Sugar Tree Church on Sunday next by Revs. A. H. Ingle and N. Burkhart

A FRIEND
