Cemetery Description by Wes Bell

CLENDENEN -_WARD Cemetery

(NOTE: This cemetery is listed as the Houston Ward Cemetery
on the Scott County Historical Society web site.)

Pattonsville, Virginia

This cemetery* is on private property more commonly referred to as the Clendenen Mountain View Ranch. The cemetery is approximately 1,000 feet more or less West of State Route # 604 on a hill. It may be reached by traveling about one half mile East of Pattonsville, Virginia on Pattonsville Road (St. Rd. # 604). The cemetery is well marked with a sign viewable from the highway. GPS coordinates for the highway entrance are N 36 42.085, W 82 50.585, elevation 1,415 feet.

*NOTE: There are actually "four" different burial plots on this hill/ridge.

"CLENDENEN -_WARD Cemetery" is on the ridge closest to the entrance to the ranch. It is separately fenced and visible from the state highway. Prior publications have listed these graves under title of "Bell Cemetery." This plot is distinctly separate on the same ridge/hill within 1,000 feet of Bell, Castle, and Adams plots to the north northeast on the ridge. The site is free of overgrowth and debris in summer of 2010. Buried here are:

- Houston Ward, b. Jun 15, 1845, d. Nov 12, 1910, marker is 4 foot high.

- Maggie Ward, b. Jun 5, 1847, d. Sept 20, 1907, marker is 4 foot high.

(Wife of Houston Ward),

(Her daughter is Bessie Ward (1871-1957) who was married to Col. A.L. Clendenen (1865-1942). A. L and Bessie Clendenen are buried in Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Virginia.)

(On one of these monuments has a spelling error of "Word.")

- Fred B. Dishner, b. April 23, 1947, d. April 29, 1947, a small marker is noted.

- Buster Dishner, b. Nov 1935, d. Nov 1936, a small marker is noted.

(He is child of Venus and Lee Dishner.)

- Geneva Lee, b. Oct 1933, d Nov 1933

(a small marker is partially buried as of May 2010)

(child of M. and Mavis Marsee)
