The Southwest Virginian was published from 1978 to 1984 in Wise County, Virginia and included 34 issues totaling over 1800 pages of genealogical data. Topics covered such items as census records, tax lists, vital records, bible records, cemetery records, marriage records, Revolutionary War pension records, family histories, biographical sketches and much, much more. Records for most of the counties of Southwest Virginia can be found within this collection. The Southwest Virginian has long been out of print and is rarely if ever seen available today. When last available, several years ago, the price for a complete collection was about $250.00. Co-editor Rhonda Robertson has granted permission for The Southwest Virginian to be made available on CD at a fraction of that price. The complete collection of 34 issues has been scanned to pdf files and run through optical character recognition software making each issue fully searchable. RUSSELL COUNTY, VA LAW ORDER BOOK 10, 1833-1838 Transcribed by Donald W. Helton 2007, 8x10,iv, 550 pp., surname index.Law Order books consist of the corrected, transcribed clerk's notes of the court proceedings. As such, they give detailed information on individuals brought before the court, of jury decisions, and court justice's orders for county maintenance. The author has meticulously transcribed the court law order book noted above, and it is a treasure trove of information for the genealogist with family in Russell county during the 1830s. More than seven hundred families are represented in the court proceedings, and they constitute thousands of individuals who appear as either defendants or plaintiffs. Price - $49.95

The Russell Memorial Cemetery book contains 193 pages with 5,196 entries. The earliest birth dates listed are in the early 1800's and the earliest death listed is 1908. The Ketron Memorial book contains 80 pages with 2,153 entries. The listings are current through May 18th, 2004 for both cemeteries. Because of the annotated information, both books will serve as an invaluable resource for anyone with ties to Russell Co. and especially those doing genealogical research here. Additional information includes maiden names, spouses, parents, military service and more.

The ancestry of this American family begins about 300 years ago with an Irish immigrant who found himself a captive of the Native Americans. He comes to adopt their ways and to marry into the tribe of his captors. His son settles in the mountain regions of Southwestern Virginia and the history of this group begins there. Summary:
Fleming Burk, Sr. (1767-1848) came to Russell Co., VA c1795 from
GA. He names his eight children in his 1848 will. Chapter I covers the
early generations, tracing Fleming, Sr. through his father, Thomas, to his
grandfather, Henry (c1698-1777), to his great grandfather, John (1656-1699)
and includes information on John's mother with speculation on John's
father. Also included is known information on children related to this
line. Interestingly, Thomas Burk's brother, John, had descendants who
married into the Washington and Jefferson families--with the latter being a
direct connection to Thomas Jefferson.
The remaining 8 chapters trace the eight descendants of Fleming Burk, Sr. First child Nancy married Jesse Vermillion (1787-1862); son of Wm. Vermillion and Nancy McNeil; second Child Jane married James Jessee (1794-1860), son of John Jessee and Frankey Lea; third child William married Rebecca Jessee (1797-1860), sister to James Jessee; fourth child Mary "Polly" married William Isaiah Fuller (c1796-1878), son of Abraham Fuller and Mary Sargent; fifth child, Sarah "Sally" married John Browning (1793-1858), son of Francis Browning and Elizabeth Vermillion; sixth child, Fleming, Jr. married Nancy Jessee, daughter of Elder David Jessee and Catherine Banner, w/John being son of John Jessee, Sr.; seventh child, Robert married Anna Gose (c1808-1889), daughter of George Gose and his 1st wife, Elizabeth Jessee [daughter of John Jessee]; and the eighth child, John, married Margaret Dyer (1816-1893).
