CONDITION

An undated Daily Progress obituary (acquired from a descendant) states Richard is buried at Maplewood. No grave marker has been found and his name is not listed in the city burial records. Since his mother, Mary Jane Pinkard, is buried here it is possible Richard's remains were placed in this same section.

BIOGRAPHY

Richard is the son of Richard N. Pinkard and Mary Jane Brand Pinkard (Mary Jane is buried in this family section). He married Nellie J. ____. Known child of Richard and Nellie is Nellie Oliver Pinkard, born 12/25/1870. Nellie Oliver married Walker L. Payne. Two children are known from that marriage: Virginia Lee [called Olive] and Lillimae.

On 10/6/1862, Richard enlisted as a private in Capt. William B. Mallory's Company at Charlottesville. In December 1863, he was detailed as a pharmacist at Charlottesville General Hospital until the end of the war. Richard and Nellie J. appear in the 1870 Louisa County, Frederick Hall Post Office census as Household #486. Richard's age is 28 and Nellie J. is 25. No children are listed. In 1880, Richard is living in the home of Robert Boswell in Washington D.C.,Ward 7, Visit 462/496. He is listed as "son-in-law" and his wife is identified as "Josephine." Again, no children are listed in this census even though his daughter Nellie Oliver would have been 10 years old by now.
