7/11/01 Headstone has fresh horizontal and vertical scratches on its East face. It is sunken and leans severly toward the East. A sunken footstone, badly chipped and scratched, reads E. J.

BIOGRAPHY


Elizabeth was the 2nd wife of Jesse W. Jones.  They married in Albemarle
12/16/1840.  She was the daughter of Andrew and Tacy Zigler, both buried 
in this family section.

Jesse and Elizabeth are known to have had the following children:

MARIA -- Born abt 1841.  Married J. W. Payne.
JESSE -- Born abt 1848.
ANN (or Annie) -- Born abt 1850.
LIZZIE ELLEN -- Lizzie died about 1855 at the age of 11 months and is buried
beside her mother.
EMMA -- born abt 1855

Jesse and Elizabeth appear in the 1850 Albemarle census dtd 30 Aug 
(Visit 726).  Jesse W. Jones (age 38) is identified as a "Merchant."  
Besides children Maria, Jesse Jr and Ann, 14 year old Mary Jones is 
listed.  Mary was the daughter of Jesse's first wife, Ann E. Proctor.  
Mary later married John Nicholas Perkins of Fluvanna. 

After Elizabeth's death Jesse married Mary Frances Wiant on 9/29/1856 
in Albemarle County.  Neither Jesse or his third wife, Mary Frances 
appear in City Burial records.  They burial place is unknown at this
time.  

Jesse's will was probated 5/10/1888 and written 
5/14/1862.

Will of Jesse W. Jones Decd.

In the name of God Amen.  I Jesse W. Jones of Charlottesville Va, being of 
sound mind and body, do make this to be my last will and testament, as follows 
(that is to say) I desire that my body be buried at the direction of my present 
Wife and I desire that all my just debts be paid out of my personal estate and 
debts due to me, so soon after my decease as may be convenient.  First I give 
and bequeath unto my dear wife Mary Frances, in testimony of my sincere __?__ 
and affection for her, all the property of every description such as negroes etc 
which she has or may receive from her father�s estate and in my possession at 
the time of my decease.  She shall have a full and perfect right to all such 
property.  I also give and bequeath to her the house and lot in Charlottesville 
which we occupy, during her natural life and at her decease to be sold and 
divided amongst my children as herein after specified.

As I have information to induce me to believe that my daughter Maria (who 
intermarried with J. W. Payne) will be much more liberally provided for by 
her Grandmother than the other children, I give and bequeath to her the sum 
of one hundred dollars only.  I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary (who 
intermarried with J. N. Perkins) the sum of one thousand dollars, and to be 
equal with the other three children herein after named in the residue of my 
estate.  I desire that the portion to which my other children, to wit, Jesse, 
Annie and Emma, may be entitled to shall be placed in the hands of my dear wife 
and for her to have the care of them and their funds and of their tuition and to 
act as guardian for them without being required to give any security for any money 
that may come into her hands for them.  And I do hereby nominate and appoint 
John N. Perkins to be executor of this my last will and testament and desire 
that he may be allow to qualify and act as such without giving security.

I do hereby revoke and make void all former and other will or wills by me at 
any time or times heretofore made and do hereby declare these presents to be 
and contain my last will and testament.  In witness whereof I have set my hand 
and seal this 14th day of May 1862.

Jesse W. Jones

I do not charge any of my children with anything I may have given them before 
my death.  The $1000 for my daughter Mary is to be paid to her and then she 
is to have equal of the balance.  May 14th 1862  J. W. Jones

     At a circuit court held for Albemarle County, at the court house of said County, 
on May 10th 1888.  The last will and testament of Jesse W. Jones decd, was
presented in Court, proved by the oaths of B. R. Pace and R. K. Flannagan, 
to be entirely in the handwriting of the testator, and ordered to be recorded. 
And on the motion of Jno. N. Perkins, the Executor therein named he has leave to 
qualify:  whereupon he executed a bond with Thomas H. Griffin, J. J. Perkins, Mary 
Perkins, J. H. Seigfried, W. D. Beach, __ F. Huckstep, Willie Berry Perkins and 
Jno. W. Davis, his securities, in the penalty of sixteen thousand dollars conditioned 
according to law, and qualified as such executor according to law. And on his further 
motion B. P. Pace, R. P. Valentine, Lew Wood, W. C. Payne and F. M. Wills are appointed 
appraisers�any three of whom being duly sworn, will appraise the personal estate of 
Jesse W. Jones decd, and report to this Court.
