Lunenburg County's 250th Year Celebration

Formation of Historical Society

The 250th Anniversary Committee is collecting information for a forthcoming book, Lunenburg Legacy. Although attention will be given to traditional chronological history, much of the book's emphasis will focus on anecdotal history based upon recollections of older citizens. Material will include accounts of the county's former schools, post offices, churches, as well as tales from the past. The price of the book has not yet been determined. In order to get an idea of the amount of interest in such a history, you are asked to contact the book's editor, Anne C. Hamlett. You will be contacted with additional ordering information when the book is available.

In addition, you are invited to submit Lunenburg information for possible inclusion in the book to Anne Hamlett at the above e-mail address. Materials which have been contributed for use in the book are currently being published in a weekly column, "Lunenburg Legacy," which appears in the Kenbridge-Victoria Dispatch.

Lunenburg's 250th Anniversary Committee is offering for sale a commemorative poster which features a beautiful collage (see picture above) of local scenes painted by well-known Lunenburg folk artist Eldridge Bagley. Bagley's original oil painting hangs in historic Lunenburg Court House, the building which is the focal point for this outstanding work of art. Other local landmarks included in the poster are Love's Mill, Thrift's Chapel Church, Unity School, and Farmer's Warehouse. Other scenes highlight the county's historic marker, Indian artifacts, the Virginian Railroad, Kenbridge's Strawberry Festival, Victoria's Autumn Days, along with the land and its streams, forests, and wildlife. Included with each poster is a description of the items selected for the collage and an explanation of their importance in the county's history. The art work on the poster (which is horizontal in orientation) measures 17 3/4 "by 23 3/4"; a margin around the work increases its finished size to 22" by 28". The artwork was used on the cover of the 1997 Lunenburg County Guidebook.

The Committee Vice-Chair, Anne C. Hamlett, has agreed to coordinate the mail-order sale of these posters. Signed posters are priced at $25.00 each; unsigned ones, $15.00 -- a tremendous bargain considering the size of the work and the prominence of the artist. Shipping (in a sturdy mailing tube) and postage amounts to $4.00 for each poster. You may make your check payable to Anne C. Hamlett and mail it to her at Route 1, Box 65-H, Victoria, VA 23974. Questions may be addressed to Anne C. Hamlett

Quantities are limited, so be sure to order right away! The poster will be a wonderful addition to your collection of Lunenburg memorabilia. It will make an excellent gift for anyone who has roots in the county!
