Sister Lurinda E. Shepherd,
daughter of Capt. W. H. C. Bolt and Annie Sutphin Bolt, was born March 9, 1950;
and was married to James D. Shepherd, March 12, 1868, to which union were born
eleven children, four boys and seven girls, two boys and one girl with her
husband, preceding her to the tomb.
She suffered consumption and never complained of her
affliction, but was cheerful, and enjoyed above all things else to talk with
the brethren and sisters.
I visited Sister Shepherd a while before her death, from a
promise given to Mr. Shepherd as he was dying at Hillsville, Va.,
from a shot during a sham battle, July 4, 1910. I greatly enjoyed paying the
vow to Mr. Shepherd, in visiting his lonely widow and daughter. Her
conversation was wholly upon the goodness and tender mercies of God, making her
lonely home a pleasant sanctuary of the Lord, till February 19, 1913, when the
thread of life was broken and her soul ascended to the realms of the blest. The
day following, after a suitable service by Elders J. M. Dickerson and C. C. Phibbs, the dear body of sister and mother was laid in the
Laurel Fork churchyard, by the side of her husband. May the Lord supply the
needs of her children, and may they ever cherish the true pattern of Mother and
never forget their obligations to their God.
Respectfully,
Octavia J. Goad
Rt. 2, Fancy Gap, Va.
