Name: (Mr.) Lyn Overton
E-mail address: [email protected]
Comments: I am a descendant of Reuben B. Overton (1780? VA-1826 KY). My DNA test shows that I am directly connected to the Howerton family. The name Howerton shifted to Overton 1780-1900. Most informal records show Reuben Overton as born in the Richmond area, but I suspect that he was related to the John Howerton>Obadiah Overton/Howerton> Lewis Overton line of Culpeper County. I suspect this because of parallel naming patterns in both families. If anyone has information on this it would be wonderful. Thanks.

Comments: Am hoping someone can help me learn more about Richardsville and Richards Ferry and any of the Richards family associated with this area. I've traced family back to Isaac Richards b. 1774 married Elizabeth Robinson b 1778 in neighboring Orange County. Some tid bits I've come across online suggest the family hails from Culpeper. An article from PA Hist. journal on Owen Richards claims one of his sons, John, and his wife and kids settled in Virginia near the Rappahannock and the town bore his name. Anyway, I have lots of history and photos of Richards from Rockingham County 1800's to present but can't seem to go the other direction. Hope I connect with some cousins out there!

Comments: Researching the Murray and Martha MARTIN family from (primarily) Stevensburg,Culpeper Co. The family was bi-racial with some children later passing as white and others listed as mulatto on censuses. Martha (b. 1825 Va.) lived bore 8 children in Culpeper Co., including Robert L., Georgiana, Larkin W., Peter, James, Susan L., Murray Jr, and Charles. Murray was not listed on censuses with Martha (who was white) and children (and Murray's mother Susan) so I don't know if he was a slave or a free man of color who worked away from home. Their children seem to have become successful in their lives and marriages, with several remaining in Culpeper County, as farmers of their own farms.

Comments: Anyone have information on the SHAWs of Culpeper/Fauquier County? Husband's grandfather is John Cleveland SHAW, then Jackson Neal SHAW, Strother Howard SHAW 1809-1890 and maybe Neal SHAW 1779-1860 born in Culpeper. Cannot find out anything further than that. On the female side, Susanna MORROW, Roberta Josephine HACKLEY, Margaret G. YATES.

Comments: I've hit a dead end in my research for my family members. I'm researching for information on Theophilus Huff and Hannah Humphrey Huff. They lived in the rappahannock county area for years, but moved to Culpper county where I believed he died around 1840. I believe they had a couple of sons, one I know of is theoderick and possible Isaas, Theophilus Jr. and maybe more. Any help then anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: looking for long lost family. grandmothers grandmother was freed from the Culpeper plantation with her "man" and all children, as slavers were on property to take them south. she was a horse woman and he was a rot-iron artisan. they had 13 to 15 children and he was shot in the hip by the slavers as he was getting into the buckboard that was used to make their getaway north. all but three of the children died from smallpocks after arriving at a picket line. he died from the gun shot wound. both spoke and read german.

Comments: I am doing research on Ephraim Beazley, down through William Beazley, through Thomas Beazley, then, Richard Estes Beazley to my Grandmother Lillian Beazley Mantz. She worked on the Beazley family tree in the first part of the 20th century, and I think she has some mistakes...she has Ephraim Beazley coming from England about 1740 settling first in King and Queen County, VA and then on to Spottsylvania County, VA. She did not know the name of his wife....then his son William Beazley, she says b. 1757, no death date, and married to Elizabeth Carlton, daughter of Ambrose Carlton..I am not sure this is correct with what I have found on ancestry.com, and I wonder if anyone can help me straighten this out. I have read of land dealings of Ephraim in Culpeper Co, and it looks like he bought a lot of land of and on. Any help here would be appreciated. I live in Keswick, VA, so mnot far from Culpeper.

Comments: I want to search the roots for my African American family who have roots in Culpeper and don't know where to start. My grandmother, Ada Jane Majours (Majors) was the daughter of Hill Majours. She and her sisters Caroline and Julia Majours resided in Culpeper (some longer than others). Ada married Alexander Smith Hager, moving to Pennsylvania in the late 1890's--early 1900's. Julia stayed in Culpeper, marrying Herbert Peyton and liveds on a farm owned by someone with a name sounding like Quintense. Caroline or Carrie also moved to Pennslyvania, marrying a man with the last name of Jackson. If anyone has knowledge of this family, all information will be appraciated.
