Virginia  At a court continued and held at the Court house for

The County of Botetourt on Tuesday the 12th day of November 1833

On this 12th day of November in the year 1833 personally

Appeared in open court the same being a court of record for

Botetourt County  Zachariah Lee  now a resident of of Botetourt

County and state of Virginia  aged about sixty seven years

Who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his

Oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the

Benefit of the provisions of the act of Congress passed

June the 7th 1832 that he was born in Albemarle county

He thinks in the year 1765 and his Father with appli-

cant removed when he was about four years old to

Rockingham county State of Virginia and when this appli-

cant was about fourteen years old he volunteered his services

Under the command of Captain Michael Coker and marched

To near Richmond where he joined a regiment under the com-

mand of Col. William Harris and served in the lower part

Of Virginia and was marched to different places but this appli-

cant  being entirely illiterate does not recollect all the encamp-

ments not knowing any thing of the Geography of the country

this applicant states that he served six months certainly

and knows he was detained in service sometime afterwards

tell new recruits came and in this Tour and then returned

To Buckingham and remained about three weeks when

He was drafted into service under the command of

Capt. James Frazier and Rindezvoused at Rockingham court

House under the command of Captain William Harris and from

Thence marched to Petersburg Va and from thence to Holibshale

Where a near which last named place this applicant

Was in a Skirmish with the enemy and received a wound

From a musket Ball or Buck Shot in his leg which disabled

Him for some time he states that he served Six months this

Tam and afterwards he returned home and remained a short

Time and was again Drafted into Service under Captain

Jerimiah Beagly and Rindizvoused at Rockingham court

house and was again attached to the regiment under the

Command of Col. William Harris and marched to the

Canfines of Carolina and remained for sex months (in

this Campaign  he was in the Battle of Guilford)

when he returned to Rockingham  and remaind there about

two months and was again Drafted into Service under the command

of Captain William Awl and was attached to Col. William Harris

regiment and marched  to the lower part of Virginia where

he remained three months and was discharged (as he before

stated he is utterly ignorant of Geography and cannot

particularize the different encampments and further states

that he was at that time very Young).  And then returned

to Rockingham where he remained till about  twenty five

or thirty years ago when he removed to Botetourt county

where he has resided ever since and now resides this applicant  states

that he remembers that he was ubder the command of General

Mulinberg he cannot recollect the number of his regiment he

Recollects  that he was under the command of General Green

In his Tour to the Carolina line – this applicant farther

States that he was in a slight skirmish with the enemy at

Hobbs' Hole this applicant states that he has no record of

His age that if he ever received a written discharge he

Has lost it – this applicant has no written evidence of his

Service nor does he know of any person living in this county

By whom he can prove it, he is known in his neighborhood

by Peter Brickey and James Smiley he hereby relinquishes

Every Claim whatever to a pension as xxx except the

Present and he declares that his name is not on the pension

Rolls of any agency of any state whatever given

Well acquainted with him that that we believe him to be about

Sixty Seven years of age and tht he is a man of veracity

Prescribed by the war department that the above named

Applicant was a revolutionary Soldier and Served as he stated

And the court further certify that it appears to them that

James Smiley and Peter Brickey who have signed the

Prexxding Certificate are resident s in the county of Botetourt

And are Credible persons and that their statement is

Entitled to credit and the Court further certifies that there

Is no clergyman residyng in the neighbourhood of the said

Applicant,

And at a (previous) court continued and held for the said

County of Botetourt on Friday the 16th day of August

1833 personally appeared in open court (the same being

a court of record)   Theodonius Hall and made Oath

To the following Certificate which is also ordered to be

Certified – to wit-

This day James Meddaiuz  personally appeared

 before me a justice of peace for the county of

foresaid & made oaths that he recollects dis-

tinctly that Zachariah Lee was in the service

under the comand of Captain Jerimiah

Beasley & that himself & the said Lee was

attached to  the regiment commanded by Col.

Harrison & that they were stationed part of the

Time somewhere between Beckman & Williams-

Burg Virginia – tho they were stationed at no

One time very long that they were pursuing

The enemy almost regularly – as to the

Length of time that the said Lee served

He did not recollect but is of opinion yhat

Captian Beasley's tour was only for three

Months –– given under my hand & seal

Virginia  At a court held at the Court house for County

of Botetourt on Monday the 12th day of May 1834

On this 12th day of May in the year 1834 personally

Appeared in open court (the same being a court of record for

Botetourt County( Zachariah Lee  now a resident of of

Botetourt County and state of Virginia aged about sixty

nine years who being first duly sworn according to law

doth on his Oath make the following declaration in order

to obtain the benefit of the provisions of the act of

Congress passed June the 7th 1832 that  he was born in

Albemarl county in the year 1765 from the best infor-

mation he can obtain on the subject and his Father with

this applicant when he was about four years old removed

to Rockingham County State of Virginia and when this

applicant was about fourteen years old he volunteered

his services in a company under the command of

Captain Michael Coker and marched to near Richmond

where he joined a regiment  under the Command

of Col. William Harris and was marched to different

places  in lower Virginia but being illiterate and ignorant

of the Geography of the Country he cannot specify the several 

places at which he was encamped, during this campaign

this applicant states that he served six months during

this Tour and was detained some time langer the oyher

troop arrived but this applicant claims for six months

only for this lans as he Cannot precisely specify how

much longer he was detained, this applicant states

that after he was discharged  he returned  to Rockingham

and remained at home but about three weeks when he

was drafted into service under the Command of Capt.

James Frazier and rindezvoused at Rockingham Court

house from whence he was marched to Petersburg Virginia

and from thence to Hobbs Hale at or near which last

named place this applicant  in a Skirmish with

the Enemy and received a wound in his leg from a musket

ball or Buck Shot which rendered him for some time

unfit for service  he states that he served Six months

this tour after which  he returned home and remained

a short time and was again drafted into Service under

Captain Jerimiah Beazly and Rindizvoused at Rockingham

Court house and was attached to Col Harris' regiment

and marched to the Confines of Virginia and Carolina

where he served six months during this Campaign 

this applicant  was in the Battle of Guilford court house

after which he returned home  and remained a little

upwards  of two months when he was Drafted into

Service under the command of Captain William Awl

and was marched  to the lower part of Virginia and

remained in the service three months xxx xxxand

was discharged this applicant is Confident that in two

of the tours above recited he was detained in service

longer than Six monyhs but beibg at that time very

young he cannot with precision state exactly how long

and therefore to be perfectly safe he claims but six

months for each of the two tours above xxxx,  This

applicany as before alleged, states that he was very

young when he enyered the service that he was illit-

erate and unacquainted with the Geography of the

Country and Consequently Cannot Specify more distinctly

Than he has done the different encampments to which

He was ordered during his service,  This applicant states

That after he was discharged from his fiurth and

Last Campaign he returned to Rockingham where he

remained till about  twenty five or thirty years ago

when he removed to Botetourt  Virginia where he now resides &

has resided ever since,   This applicant  states  that he remembers

that he was a part of his service under the command

of Genl Mulinberg but  does not recollect the number of

his regiment   he was during his campaign to the Carolina

under the command of General Green and that he was

as before stated in a skirmish with the enemy at

This applicant is known in his neighborhood by

James Murry and Basil Hall, he hereby relinquishes

Every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except

The present and he declares that his name is not on the

Pension roll of any agency of any State whatever

neighborhood of the above applicant so hereby certify

that we are well acquainted with him that that we

believe him to be about Sixty nine years of age

and tht he is a man of veracity That he is reputed

have been a soldier of the Revolution And that we concur in that opinion –

mentioned applicant Zachariah Lee that She

recollects that He marched into service in the Revolution-

ary War and that he returned   that he served She

believes  three or four tours but She does not know

how long each time but she distinctly recollects

of him going and returning from service several times

interrogories prescribed by the War Department

that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary

Soldier and served as he stated and the Court further certify

That it appears to them that James Murry and Basil Hall

And  that Thedosiaus Hall who have signed the preceding cer-

tificate and affidavit are residents in the county of Botetourt

and are credible persons and that their statement is entitled

to credit  and the Court further certifies that there is no

Clergyman residing in the neighborhood of the said applicant-

And at a Court held at the Court house for the said

County on Monday the 10th day of November 1834

Zachariah Lee the above named applicant having

Produced to the court additional testimony to enable

Him to obtain a pension, and the same being duly inspected

It is ordered to be attached to the foregoing declaration
