Pension Application of William Jones: S16172

State of
On this 29 day of August AD 1834[?] personally came before
me a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in and for said County, William Jones
aged Eighty four (84) Years a resident of said County and State, who being duly
sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration to wit
in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.
That he entered the service of the United States under the following named
officers, to wit, sometime in the early part of the Year AD 1780, I volunteered
as a substitute for my Father whose name was William James in the company
commanded by Captain Joseph Floyd [sic: Cloyd], for the term of three months;
that at this time I was not more than fifteen or sixteen years of age, but my
Father having volunteered, (although infirm) and his care and attention being
much needed by his family at home, I was accepted in his place, That this
volunteering took place in the or near the town of County of Montgomery
State of Virginia, That he continued in actual service three months as such
said Volunteer, that during that time he was marched to North Carolina, was at
Hoover Town and Salem, and was engaged in a battle that was fought in said
North Carolina near the Shallow ford of the Yadkin River [14 Oct 1780], That at
the close of his said Three months services he enlisted for during the war at
Cumberland City.

Questions put and answers given by the said William Jones before me the undersigned and which answers are embodied in the above Declaration–
1st Where, and in what year were you born?
Ans’r. I was born in
the County of knot known State of
2nd. Have you any record of your age? and if so, where is it?
Ans’r. none known or recollected
3rd. Where were you living when called into the Service, where have you lived since the Revolutionary war; and where do you now live?
Ans’r. I lived in
4th. How were you called into the service where you a Substitute, and if so for whom?
Ans’r. I went as a Substitute for my Father Wm. Jones in the 1st. place, and at the conclusion of his term I enlisted in Virginia Troops for during the war
5th. Question. State the names of some of the Regular officers, who were with the troops, where you served, such continental and Militia Regiments as you can recollect; and the general circumstances of your service.
Ans’r. The answer to this Question is fully embodied in the above Declaration.
6th. State the names of Persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood, and who can testify as to your character for veracity, and their belief of your services as a soldier of the Revolution?
Ans’r. Rev’d. George Gatch – Joseph Davis – John Dumford, Jess Teal– Joseph Davis Sen’r. and Ma[?] Davison?
7th. Did you ever receive a discharge from the service, and if so, by whom was it given and signed, and what has become of it?
Ans’r. I received a discharge I think it was handed to me by my Capt I know not what has become of it I have lost or mislaid it

County of Clermont} On this the 5th day of April AD 1856 personally appeared before me a justice of the Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid William Jones aged ninety one say (91) years a resident of Clermont County State of Ohio who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the Identical William Jones who was a Private the Company by Captain Joseph Floyd and also a private in the Company commanded by Captain Basterfield that the company commanded by Captain Joseph Floyd was not as this affiant now remembers attached to any particular Regiment but if it was this affiant has now forgotten it. that said Company however belonged to the Virginia Militia or Volunteers in the Revolutionary War declared by the United States against Great Britain on the [blank] day of [blank] AD 17[blank] that he volunteered at the County of Montgomery in the State of Virginia on or about the last of August in the year 1780 for the term of three months and continued in actual service for the term of three months and was honorably discharged at Montgomery County Virginia on or about the last of November AD 1780, this affiant also states that he is the Identical person who was a private in the Company of Virginia regulars commanded by Captain Basterfield his given name this affiant does not now remember he does remember to whose regiment said company was attached That he enlisted in said Company at Cumberland County Virginia about the last of December 1780 or first of January 1781 for the period of during the War, that he remained in said service until Peace was made and was honorably discharged. this last service was in the Revolutionary War declared as before stated.
That he has heretofore signed an Application for land but does not now know what was done with as he had entrusted it to a man by the name of Jarvis. this was about 3 or 4 years ago, but says that he has never before received any Bounty land for his said services, and that he makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act approved March 3, 1855, and that he has never applied for except as above stated, and that he has never received any Bounty Land Warrant for such service
