Pension Application of William Henry: W364

State of Tennessee}    On this 1st day of September one thousand eight hundred & thirty two

Sevier County}

            Personally appeared before me Robert Duggan an acting Justice of the peace for the State and County aforesaid William Henry, a resident of of the county of Sevier and State of Tennessee aged 82 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7the 1832.

            That he entered the service of the United States, under the following named officers, and served as herein stated.

            That he was born in the state of Virginia, Bastly[?] County and shortly removed by his parents to Botetourt County in Va.

            That he enlisted in the service in 1776 of the United States at the age of 27 in Botetourt County Virginia for two years under the command of General Han [sic: Hand], Col. Andrew Donley [sic: Donally], Capt. McKee  Ensign Jas. Gilmore [or Gilmer] & Lieut James Thompson by whom he was enlisted. That he marched thence from Botetourt County to Greenbrier County [sic: see note below] where they rendezvoused. That he marched thence, under the above named officers to Fort Randolph at the mouth of New River, Va. where he remained two years. – that then on the 10th day of August (as he believes) he was discharged in the year 1778 and returned home to Botetourt, making a term of 2. years for which time he enlisted.

            Said applicant, further states, that he entered the service of the United States again for 3 months under the command of General Muningberg [sic: Muhlenberg], Col. Samuel Lewis to whose regiment he was attached at the Siege of Little York, that he messed with Robert Shadden, John Walker, Joseph Shadden &c., that he has no Documentary Evidence, and that he knows of but one person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his services and that person is John Henry, whose testimony is taken, and accompanies this Declaration  that the whole term of his services in the armies of the United States is two years and three months  That he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State.

NOTES:

            Greenbrier County, where Henry stated he was born about 1750, was formed from Botetourt County in 1778. Botetourt County was formed from Augusta County in 1769. At its formation, Greenbrier County included Point Pleasant, now in West Virginia on the Ohio River at the mouth of the Kanawha River, as the New River below Charleston is now called.]

Sevier County} Ss.

            At a County Court Began and held for the County of Sevier at the Court House in Sevierville on the first Monday being the fifth day of August Anno Domini 1839. Personally appeared in Open Court it being a Court of Record, Elizabeth Henry a Resident Sevier County, Born 11th day of November 1765, aged now nearly seventy four years, who being first duly sworn in Open Court according to Law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Provision made by the Act of Congress passed July 7th 1838 Entitled “an Act granting half pay and Pensions to certain widows”  That she is the widow of William Henry who was a Private in the Militia and Regular service (as she believes). the services rendered by said soldier cannot be stated by this applicant, neither the Troop Company or Regiment in which said service was performed. But said William Henry was a Pensioner under the Act of Congress of 1832 as this applicant believes at the Rate of Eighty Dollars per annum. When said Deceased was placed upon the Pension roll, he lived in Sevier County, and Rec’d. his Pension semiannually from the Pension Agent at Knoxville. The papers upon which said Pension was granted are in the file at the War office to which the Department is most Respectfully Referred.

            She further Declares that she was married on the 15th day of February 1780, that her Husband the aforesaid William Henry Died on the 1st day of February 1835. the marriage took place previous to the first of January 1794 and not prior to his leaving the service, viz at the time above stated.
