Pension Applications of John and Martha Williamson: W6523

At a Court held for Botetourt County in the State of Virginia the 9th day of June 1818

            John Williamson an inhabitant of this County and citizen of the Commonwealth personally appeared before this court, being a Court of Record, and made oath that he inlisted in the year 1777 with Lieut’t. Nathaniel Twig in Capt’n. Thomas Thweat’s company of the 14th Virginia Reg’t then commanded by Colo. William Davies on continental establishment, in the Army of the revolution; that he inlisted for the term of three years, which term he served & was regularly discharged by Colo. [Christian] Febiger at Philadelphia, which discharge he has lost, and finally that his circumstances have become so much reduced, as to need the assistance of his country for support

            Botetourt County towit

                        On this 11th day of September 1820 personally appeared in open Court being a Court of record – which proceeds according to the course of the Law keeping a record of its proceedings & having the power of fine & imprisonment John Williamson aged 69 years, resident in said County, who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his Oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war as follows Viz – That he enlisted some time in the year 1777 in Captain Thweats Company 14th Regiment Virginia line on Continental establishment, that he served in the said Company for three years that previously to this enlistment as above stated he served one year under Captain Brunt first Reg’t. Virginia line – afterwards he enlisted with Captain Robert Walton – and served some times in the State of Georgia – And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 – and that I have not since that time by Gift Sale, or in any manner disposed of my property, or any part thereof with an intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of the act of Congress Entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land & Naval services of the United States of America in the revolutionary War – passed on the 18th March 1818 – And that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me, any property or securities or Contracts or Debts due to me, nor have I any income other than is contained in the Schedule hereto annexed & by me subscribed

Schedule – An old horse – four chairs, one pine table  one plow, two hoes & 1 mattock, 1 Iron wedge, two axes 6 plates 6 knives & forks 6 cups & saucers & 16 hogs

That he is a labourer by profession, but is now unable to work. That he has a wife aged forty nine years – four children living with him two boys One aged 15 the other 13  three Daughters One 20 the other 18 & the youngest 11 years.      John his X mark Williamson

 

NOTES: On 21 Sep 1840 Martha Williamson, 69, of Roanoke County VA applied for a pension, stating that on 5 Nov 1786 she married John Williamson, who died 15 Feb 1828. A typed summary states that in 1854 she was living in Botetourt County and that she died in that year.
