State of Tennessee}    On this the 13th day of February 1840 personally appeared before the

Monroe County}          subscribed John Knox a Justice of the County Court for said County (the same being a Court of record) Margaret Hall, a resident of said County in said State, aged seventy two years (so well as she can ascertain, and as she verily believes) who being first duly sworn, according to law, doth, on her oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress, passed July 7, 1838, entitled “An act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows”  That she is the widow of James Hall late of said Monroe County, who was a Revolutionary Pensioner in accordance with the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 7th of June 1832, and who died on the 11th day of March 1836. Your petitioner refers to the Declaration of the said James Hall deceased, now on file in the War Department, for a detailed account of his services in the Revolution, which Declaration was established by the proof required. She further declares that she was married to the said James Hall (as well as she is informed or can ascertain) in the first week of September 1782, that her said husband died as above stated March 11th 1836, that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but the marriage took place previous to the first of January, 1794, viz at the time above stated. She states that she was married in Virginia near what is now Wythe County Virginia, on Cripple Creek, by a German Preacher of the Gospel, in accordance she thinks with the form of the Church of England. She has no record of her marriage, and never has had, since the book in which it was recorded was taken to [word illegible] Tennessee by Quint Hall her husband’s brother, many say 30 years ago. The said Quint Hall is now dead, and she knows not where the record is.

She is unable particularly to state the service of her husband, but understood he was in the battle at the shallow ford of the Yadkin. Her said husband was when he obtained the pension, was a citizen of Blount County, T. but removed afterwards to said Monroe County, where he died.

She does not know that there was ever any record of her marriage, except that she had the date of it in the Confession of Faith, which Quint Hall took off long ago, at least 30 years, & she knows nothing of it – he being long since dead.
