Pension Application of Giles Thomas: S6226

State of Virginia, Montgomery county Sc

On this 6th day of August 1832, personally appeared in open court before the Justices of the court of said county, now sitting Giles Thomas a resident in the county and state aforesaid aged Sixty eight years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named oficers and served as herein stated. He first entered the service in the Maryland State Regiment on the 26th day of July 1780 in the county of Charles in said State. the regiment was commanded by the following officers towit, Alexander Smith Colonel, Edward Giles Major, and Charles Smith was the name of the Captain, who commanded the company to which the applicant belonged, he was in service three entire years from the said 26th of July until the 26th July 1783, and then was discharged, A few days before the battle of Guilford [sic: Guilford Court House NC, 15 March 1781] the whole of the aforesaid regiment to which he belonged, was transfered to the Maryland continental line and the officers of the former regiment sent home, he was a volunteer, he was at the Battle of Guilford  Camden [sic: Battle of Hobkirk’s Hill; 25 April 1781] and at the siege of “96" [sic: Ninety-Six SC; 22 May - 19 June 1781]. the regiment on continental establishment to which he was rensted[?] was commanded by Colonel [John] Gunby (Majors place vacant or not recollected)  The Captain under whose command he was, was of the name of [James] Bruff, [Mordecai] Gist was the Brigadier, he has no other evidence of his said service except a certificate for a lot of bounty land of Fifty acres No1747 issued by George D Brewer. Leg. Land office W.S. M.L. which he returns as evidence of title to the said lot of Land.

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State. Sworn to and subscribed the day & year aforesaid.            Giles Thomas
