Pension Application of Daniel Howe: S5565

State of Virginia}

Montgomery County}  To wit

            On this second day of October 1832, Personally appeared in open Court before the Judges of the Circuit superior Court of law and chancery for Montgomery County now sitting Daniel Howe a resident of Montgomery County and state of Virginia aged seventy four years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the “Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832, That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated. William Preston was the name of one of his Colonels and Joseph Cloyd was the name of the other, he disremembers the name of his Lieutenant Colonel, and Major. Henry Patton was the name of his Captain, and your applicant was the Lieutenant or ensign he disremembers which, as there were no other soldiers in the Company except himself, he entered the service some time in the year 1776, and left the same in the month of February 1781. The first tour he served under Captain [Thomas] Burk of about one month in the year 1776, The second under Captain Taylor of about one month in the year 1777, the third tour which lasted about one month was in the year 1777 or 1778, at which time your applicant himself was the Captain, the fourth tour was under Captain Patton in the year 1778, he thinks the fifth under Captain Burk in the year 1779 as well as he recollects, in the sixth he himself was was the commander in the year 1780, and the seventh under Captain Patton in the year 1781, all of about one month each  he resided in Montgomery County and State of Virginia when he entered the service, and was drafted each time he went out,  he was not engaged in any battles, the principle parts through which he marched was in the State of Virginia and North Carolina,  your applicant states that there were no other Companies out at the same time with those in which he served, as they were ordered out to guard the frontier except his tour into North Carolina, at which there was a Company Commanded by Captain [James] Burns and a Company of Militia commanded by Captain Saunders [difficult to read; possibly Stephen Saunders]. He never received a written discharge and has no proof of his services except the affidavits herewith provided by which he proves three months service, He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension on annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state, sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid
