BLACKBURN, LEONARD, MAYO, SCOTT -
I am trying to find information on William Monroe Mayo b.
Mar 1846 in either Botetourt or Fluvanna Co. I believe his parents
were Joseph Mayo and Nancy Blackburn both from
Fluvanna Co. William apparently married Rebecca L. Scott
1/5/1873 in Allegheny Co. and then Hannah A. Leonard on
1/18/1888 in Botetourt Co. I found William and Hannah on the 1900
census for Botetourt Co. (in EagleRock?). Both (?) William and
Hannah died in 1904 and most of their 6 children ended up in the
orphanage in Roanoke. Also on the 1900 census it showed that
Hannah's widowed mother, Ann Leonard, b. Oct 1836, was
living with them. I don't know what happened to Rebecca
Scott or if they had any children. I don't know what killed
William or Hannah. Are there any birth records available going
back to 1846? Any additional info at all would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you.

CALLAWAY, FLEMING -
I am seeking information concerning Colonel William Fleming
who I believe was the County Lieutenant for Botetourt County at the
outbreak of the American Revolution. My ancestor, Micajah
Callaway, a resident of Bedford County, enlisted in the
militia in Botetourt County along with other young men from Bedford
County. Limited information that I found in the Draper
Manuscripts indicates Colonel Fleming was an important
military figure in southwestern Virginia. One reference indicated
he was entrusted with keeping the arsenal of Virginia, which was
moved to his safekeeping away from the coast to protect it from the
British. Other information indicates he helped organize the early
militia companies that were sent to the relief of Boonesborough in
1777. Specific questions are:
1. Where did Colonel Fleming
live?
2. Was he a commander of a fort?
3. Where was the
arsenal kept?
4. Why did Botetourt County play a larger role in
the militia than other counties in the area?
I'd appreciate any
information that can be shared. Thank you.

grandmother Carrie Willie Kenney Barger were both
born in Botetourt County, VA. I hope that you can help me. Thank

from Fincastle Virginia in the 1800s. There is speculation that
