FOLEY, HAGARTY, HEGARTY -
If you are descended from a Peter Hegarty (Hagarty), who was born in County Cork, Ireland, in the 1820s and who emigrated to Virginia in the 1840s, possibly to Botetourt County, I would be very interested in talking to you. I am publishing a book this spring on the Hegarty family (he had five brothers and two sisters, most of whom settled in Canada), their origins in Ireland (I have found their farm and house they lived in) and the lives the eight children carved out in North America. Peter's younger brother Michael joined him in Virginia and spent his life there, dying in an accident at Richmond in 1879. I have next to no information about Peter and I really want to include him in this book. He may have married a Foley, but I don't know. If you can help, please e-mail me. If not, thanks for your time and sorry for the intrusion. P.S. If you're descended from any of Peter's brothers, Michael, Cornelius, Timothy, John or Daniel, or sisters Ellen and Bridget, I'd also be happy to hear from you. Thanks again,

GROOM, MITCHELL, POAGE -
A friend of mine (Irene Poage Richmond) is trying to qualify for membership in the DAR. Her ancestors come from Botetourt County, Virginia. She needs proof that her ancestor, Robert Poage, born in 1777, was the son of John Poage and Martha Jean Mitchell. John was born February 27, 1737/38 and died there in Virginia in December 1790. Robert fought in the War of 1812 and then moved on to Missouri and married Elizabeth Groom. He died there on February 6, 1856. Any help on proving that Robert was John's son would be appreciated. Sincerely,

JOHNSON, LITTLE -
Family records indicate Issac Johnson was born 20 March 1820 in Virginia. We believe from other records that it must have been either Franklin or Botetourt County. Issac married Hannah Little who was born December 11, 1802 in Franklin County. We would like to verify their marriage date and location. Also parents of each are unknown. Any information about specific sites or organizations to contact for this information would certainly be appreciated.

GISH, LANGHORNE, SPERRY, VINYARD -
My great grandfather was Col. Jacob Gish SPERRY, born ca. 1845 in Botetourt County, Virginia, died 26 Jan 1891 in Cloverdale, Botetourt, Virginia, married before 1880 to Catherine C. Langhorne. He had a son, James Langhorne Sperry, born 21 March 1880 in Danville, Pittsylvania, Virginia. I am seeking any information available about his life (including his military record), his parents or his siblings. The only candidates I have for his parents are Jacob G. Sperry and Cassy VINYARD who were married 25 May 1841 in Botetourt County, Virginia, but I have no information to support that theory. Possible candidates for his great grandparents are David SPERRY and Catherine GISH who were married 29 July 1819 in Botetourt County. I would appreciate any help that could be provided on these matters or on the SPERRY and GISH families in Virginia.

ALSUP, BROWN, CALDWELL, CANDLER, GRANT, HICKS, HIX, HOLMES, JONES, OLIPHANT, PHELPS, POTTER, ROBERTSON, WATTS -
Edith BROWN first appears on tax lists for Bedford County from 1789 through 1794 as the head of the house with no titheables over 21. She is listed on the tax rolls after Joseph, Zachariah and Jesse BROWN. Although I don't know who they are, I am assuming that there was some relation to them as they were listed together and all lived in the Beaverdam Creek area of the county. Edith was not listed after 1794 since on July 19, 1794 (bond dated for marriage) she married John GRANT, formerly of Botetourt County. They were married July 22 by Rev. John AYERS, a Methodist minister.
This is a list of known children of Edith and her husband _______ BROWN:
1. George Thomas b. 1768;
2. Henry (possible) mar. Susanna HIX in Bedford Co. on Nov 5, 1793, dau. of Patrick & Caty HIX;
3. Elizabeth (possible) mar. John HICKS in Bedford Co. on Aug 6, 1789 (possible brother of Nathaniel & Claibourn);
4. Daniel "Dance" b. 1776 mar. Keziah GRANT (dau. of the above John GRANT);
5. Frederick R. (possible) b. 1779/80 mar. Mary ROBERTSON, dau. of Jesse ROBERTSON & Susannah JONES of Princ. Edw. Co.;
6. Sarah b. 1787 mar. Hardy CALDWELL Nov 20, 1803 probably in Montgomery Co., VA.
7. Rahab b. 1789 mar. James CALDWELL probably in Montgomery Co., Va.
This is a list of known children of John GRANT and his wife Lydia/Violet _______:
1. son b. abt 1767
2. Ruth b. abt 1774 mar. James PHELPS in Bedford Co. 15 June, 1794
3. Martha Edith b. abt 1779 mar. David Alsup abt. 1800 - son of John ALSUP & Jurya POTTER
4. Lydia Keziah b. 1780 Maryland mar. Nov 2, 1799 Montgomery Co., Va. to Dance BROWN (above).
Here is chronology of John GRANT's information that I have:
1783-John GRANT living with Joseph BALDWIN, Sr., Joseph BALDWIN, Jr., and Frances BALDWIN in Loudoun Co., Va. according to the property tax information.
1784-John GRANT left Loudoun Co., Va. along with others around that time.
There were 2 John Grants in Loudon personal tax lists of 1782. One was gone in 1783 and one still there in 1790. Mine left.
Samuel HARRIS had sons:
CHILD 1. William HARRIS who was in Bedford Co. children: (a). Samuel m. Margaret HOLMES. (b). William m. Eliz. HOLMES (sister). When Wm. died, Eliz. married Sam'l. OLIPHANT. (note: Jesse BROWN & Dice sold land in Bedford Co. to Sam'l OLIPHANT on Beaver Dam Branch. Also Joseph BLANKENSHIP sold to Joseph BROWN in 1795 land on Bedford Co.'s Beaverdam Branch. Also Anthony PATE sold to Jesse BROWN south of Beaverdam Branch adjacent to Joseph PAYNE.)
CHILD 2. Samuel HARRIS Jr. m. Mary ______ in Botetourt also had children: William and Samuel. When Samuel Jr. died, Mary (widowed) in same tax area as her sons Wm. and Samuel and also John GRANT. By 1784, they left Loudoun Co. for Botetourt County.

SCOTT, then along the south fork of Enock's creek, then by where the branch empties into Ed (Edward) WATT'S pond, then with NEWLINE'S line. DONNEKIN, DUNAGAN, DUNCAN, WRIGHT -
Seeking information about Mary DUNCAN Wright who married my ancestor, Daniel Dunagan (Donnekin on Marriage Bond), in January 1802 in Greene Co. TN, but who probably came from Virginia's Amherst, Augusta or Botetourt Counties. I believe Duncan was Mary's maiden name. Reportedly, her father was Jeremiah DUNCAN born in 1750 and Rebecca/ Rebekah was her mother's name. They supposedly lived in Botetourt Co. VA in 1794 moving to Greene Co. TN in 1797. (I was told this information is contained in "Some Duncan Families of East Tennessee before 1800" by Mary Ann Dobson of Placeville, CA -- wish I had her email address if any.) Children of Jeremiah and Rebekah reportedly were: George, Mary, Rebekah, Amos, Mary, Benjamin?, Joseph, Jeremiah. I think Mary Duncan Wright had a son William Wright born in October 1791 and a son Isaac born in 1798-99. I'm more confident she had a daughter, Rebekah, born in October 1792. I think Mary was first married to William Wright in Virginia. There may have been a daughter "Polly" who was married in November 1800 to William Poage. See Chalkley Chronicles at 342-343. Under this scenario, Polly would be marrying in her early teens and Mary would be having children from about 1785 to 1815. I realize this is a 30 year span, but I think it is possible. Does anyone have anything on such a William (Sr.), William (Jr.), Isaac, Rebekah or Polly? Any connection to Peter Wright? Need Mark D. Wright's current email address if any, as <[email protected]> is no longer valid. Any help you may give me would be appreciated. rnd in Pensacola, FL (850) 484-9914
