DOWNEY/ WELLS/ TAYLOR - DOWNEY / WELLS/TAYLOR SAMUEL ( Ed.) DOWNEY married LIZZIE TAYLOR, in Amherst County on Dec.28 1904. Samuel was a widower with a 7 year old son by VIOLA WELLS. I'm the daughter of that son. I have a problem trying to locate any information on VIOLA'S parents. The marriage license say's simply, C.C.& Janie Wells. I have recently learned that LIZZIE was a "FIRST COUSIN" of VIOLA and lived with the DOWNEY family in order to care for the very ill VIOLA and her small son.She cared for this family several months before Viola died. The marriage license of Lizzie and Samuel, names William and Elizabeth A.Taylor as the parents of the bride. These people lived in Amherst for while before moving to Hopewell. Lizzie is also related to the DUFF's in some way. I hope there's someone who can tell me how these girls were cousins. If I knew what Elizabeth Taylors maiden name was, it might give me a clue. Thanks D. O'Connor

BLANKENSHIP,BAXTER,TYRE,SMITHSON - My grandfather,FELIX BLANKENSHIP, was born in March 1883 in PEDLAR MILLS, VA. His father's name was WILLIAM HENRY BLANKENSHIP. His mother's name was SALLY N. BAXTER. Sally Baxter Blankenship was born in Kentucky, but her mother was a Tyre who was born in Virginia. I do not know the Baxter's first names. Family lore has it that we are related to Daniel Boone's wife Rebecca. Family stories also say that Sally Baxter named my grandfather after a friend who died. FELIX BLANKENSHIP had a brother (half or step?) named WILL SMITHSON who was older and lived on the Pedlar Mills property as a child, I believe. Will Smithson was a circuit preacher and may have served in the Spanish-American war. I am seeking information about any of these people and their forebears and any of these families. It may be a sad story. Felix and Nancy Balnkenship left Pedlar Mills when Felix was 10 years old Ido not know why, but I do know William Henry did not go with them. The homesite is now park land. In the late 1950's my cousin and Grandfather revisited the home site and they were able to find the foundation and the porch steps as well as the remains of an old rose arbor. My grandfather had a nursemaid as a child. I wonder who she was and what became of her. In the late 1950's at the time of my grandfather's visit, there was an old man in Pedlar Mills at a store or near the crossroads who remembered playing with Will Smithson as a boy and was able to direct them. Perhaps someone in his family remains. I am researching genealogy for myself and my cousins. We would like to know the story of our family in addition to our ancestral background. If anyone reading this can offer just a crumb of information I would greatly appreciate it. Please do not hesitate to respond even if what you know is sad or scandalous. I promise I cannot be offended. I am also seeking information about where William Henry Blankenship is buried and whenhe died. Sally Baxter Blankenship died in 1933 in Cincinnatti, and is buried in the German Protestant Cemetery there. Her death certificate lists her as a widow. In great appreciation to all who may respond, I remain. Yours truly, Hildegarde Minstein

PINN/PENN - Seeking information on Rolly, James & Turner Pinn/Penn who resided in Amherst County beginning about 1774. Rolly Pinn/Penn served in the Revolutionary War and was part of the Amherst County Militia. I am seeking a roster of his service in the Revolutionary War. The Advance Newspaper which is located in Lynchburg ran an article about his unit [May 22, 1884] and Hardesty's Histoircal & Geographical Encyclopedia, Special Edition also has his name along with such notables as Patrick Henry. It seems that the printed lists I have for my ancestors service is not sufficient evidence for the Daughter's of the American Revolution. I need to find a copy of the original Roster. DUNKLE, GRAGG - I need help in finding a marriage record for William Gragg, Jr. and Nancy Dunkle. Nancy believed to have been born in Amherst County area. However, I believe this may be her second marriage; so I phrase that search this way , giving you all the facts that I know. I search for a Nancy DUNKLE and her parents. Let me state my case and what I think Nancy's profile is: I am looking for a Male DUNKLE/DUNKEL born about 1794 that married a Nancy about 1814; and he died about 1826. His wife Nancy was born about 1794 and died about 1836. After our male DUNKLE died, Nancy remarried to a William Gragg, Jr. born Augusta County April 15, 1758 (this his second marriage)and moved to Ashe County, NC where Harvey GRAGG (my wife's great grandfather) was born in 1827. Nancy and William may have had three male children born between 1815 and 1820. The 1820 Census should have listed a Male DUNKLE as Head of Household at age 26, with a female at age 26 and perhaps three male children 0 to 9. It is Nancy's last name and parents that I seek. Can you help, even if it is only locating them in the wilderness!! Regards, [email protected]

HORTON, ARTHUR - Looking for information on the HORTON's of Amherst County. I can trace back to 1730, but all is verbal. Kate was apparently a pension applicant, although I cannot find for what at this point. They had ten confirmed children - William abt 1870; May or Mae 1872; Arthur 1873; James Madison II 1876; Richard 1878; Annie 1881; Lulu 1886; Minnie 1888; Edwin 1892; Emma 1893. It is rumored that James Madison served for the Conferacy, although I have no proof of that as of yet. Perhaps that is where Kate's pension would be from?? I am also looking for the Centinary Methodist Church Cemetary, Naola, where many of these folks are buried. I hope to find James's parents and grandparents in this cemetary as well, although I really have no clue where they might be. I have never been to Amherst County, and would like to plan a trip to investigate this cemetary, as well as the church records. Any guidance would be much appreciated!

WOOD BEVERLY PHILLIPS - WOOD/BEVRLY/PHILLIPS - Amherst Co. I am seeking information regarding the parents of an AURORA WOOD b: 1846 according to her marriage license. On her 1881 marriage license to RICHARD BEVERLY b: 1843 she list her parents as "CABELL & MARY WOOD". Aurora & Richard's marriage license may be dated 1881, but on the 1900 Amherst Co. census report they apparently told the census taker that they had been married 35 yrs. And indeed, they are found together on the 1870 Amherst Co. census with a child named, MORRIS BEVERLY b: 1866. Aurora is quite often found listed as RORA ANN, NORA ANN, and ROWANNA. Her marriage license simply states AURORA, but I suspect her middle name was ANN. In an 1863 Will at the Amherst Co. Courthouse for a CABELL WOOD b: 1786 there is an AURERA ANN WOOD mentioned as an enheritant along with his other children. This could be the Cabell she gave as her father, but he is married to an ELIZABETH PHILLIPS b: 1790, and both these persons would have been well into their 50's when she was born. His other children are: OLIVER C. WOOD b: 1825, ELIZABETH WOOD (MITCHELL) b: 1828, and JAMES WOOD b: 1835. Perhaps there is ANOTHER Cabell Wood? Perhaps ELIZABETH WOOD is actually MARY ELIZABETH WOOD? Perhaps AURORA is the daughter of another deceased son, therefore "entitled" in Cabell's Will on his behalf? HEGARTY - If you are descended from a Peter Hegarty (Hagarty), who was born in County Cork, Ireland, in the 1820s and who emigrated to Virginia, possibly Amherst County, in the 1840s, I would be very interested in talking to you. I am publishing a book this spring on the Hegarty family (he had five brothers and two sisters, most of whom settled in Canada), their origins in Ireland (I have found their farm and house they lived in) and the lives the eight children carved out in North America. Peter’s younger brother Michael joined him in Virginia and spent his life there, dying in an accident at Richmond in 1879. I have next to no information about Peter and I really want to include him in this book. He may have married a Foley, but I don’t know. If you can help, please e-mail me. If not, thanks for your time and sorry for the intrusion. P.S. If you’re descended from any of Peter’s brothers, Michael, Cornelius, Timothy, John or Daniel, or sisters Ellen and Bridget, I’d also be happy to hear from you. Thanks again, Jim Hagarty

DAVIS JEFFERSON COLLINS - John Davis (b. ca. 1732) m. widow Jemima Jefferson Collins in Goochland, later Amherst County. They later moved to Albemarle. Family tradition has it that she was related to president Thomas Jefferson. I'd like to do a quick reality check on this Jemima Jefferson Collins Davis connection. Let's examine all the facts. 1. We know from written sources that three of John and Jemima's sons, Robert, Thomas and William, claimed to be first cousins of President Thomas Jefferson. 2. In order for them to be first cousins with President Thomas Jefferson, Jemima would need to be a daughter of Peter Jefferson's (Thomas' father) father, Thomas Jefferson (the president's grandfather). 3. In order for them to be first cousins once removed (more likely) she would have to be a first cousin of President Thomas Jefferson and would have to be a daughter of Peter Jefferson's only brother, Field Jefferson. 4. In order to be first cousins twice removed (actually less likely due to the dates involved) she would have to be a daughter of one of Field Jefferson's four sons: Thomas (b 1743), Peterfield (b. 1735), George (b ca.1745) or John Jefferson. 5. None of these six men are known to have had a legitimate daughter by the name of Jemima. 6. In the FIRST LIST OF TITHABLES OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, YEAR 1767 (an early form of census) on the list of George Jefferson there appears "George Jefferson (Mechkenburg), John Davis, overseer, & Negroes, to-wit: Sam, Chance, Pompey, Phillis, Patt & Lacy" 7. On the same list there appears Daniel, William and Samuel Collins. Those are all the facts that I have regarding this pair. Given recent revelations, including DNA evidence that a Jefferson fathered at least one child by President Jefferson's slave Sally Hemings, I find the conjecture that Jemima (b. ca. 1736) was a bastard child of one of the Jeffersons quite plausible. The best candidate would be the president's Uncle Field Jefferson (b. 1702, m Mary Robertson 1734, d. 1762) though it is also possible that Field's father Thomas Jefferson (b. 1679 d. 1735) is her father but this seems unlikely. If Jemima is Field Jefferson's illegitimate child it would make the Davis brother's claim of being first cousins with the president valid (although they would be half first cousins once removed). If Jemima was fathered on one of Field Jefferson's slaves, and Field was as good at keeping slave records as was his nephew the president, there might actually be a way of proving or disproving this conjecture. Are these records still extant in the Virginia Archives? It would certainly be worth a search to solve this long standing family puzzle.

GREGORY - John GREGORY was b1808 Amherst Co., VA. He was in Marion Co., MO in 1838 where he married. The problem is that I think he may have had no parents. I would either like to prove this or find his missing parents. In a later census, he claims that he did have a father and that his father was born in England. But you know that you cannot always believe what the census says. . . I am not sure if his parents and the whole family moved to MO or if it was just John. He settled in Lewis Co., MO. EDMUNDS HUGHES LAVENDER THOMAS WRIGHT - I believe that my husband's family decends from Wm. Edmunds. Based on what I have found, William Edmunds of Amherst Co. VA married Sarah (or Sally) Hughes in 2/1789 producing Samuel, Willis, Lavender,James, Nancy, Moses, Rebecca and Charley Lavender. (This info is from a message board posting and I need someone to verify this) Moses moved to St. Francois Co, Mo. where he married Mariah Thomas on 11-Feb-1832 but is not the Mose Edmonds that we are looking for. At first I thought that this was an earlier marriage of Wm. Edmunds, son of James and Sarah Lavender Edmunds. I now think that this William might be the son of Samuel (James' brother) and Alice Edmunds. It seems that the Lavender name appears in our line and one question is whether Alice (who was a widow with the married name of Wright at the time of the marriage) might have been a Lavender. Part of the problem in tracing our roots stems from the fact that my husband's great grandfather Mose (or Moses may be the given name) Edmonds (Edmunds may be the given name) was orphaned days after his birth (possibly born in Arkansas 1-2-1867). His parents Charles Lavender Edmunds (b. 1812 in Lovington, Nelson Co.VA) and Jane Copling were married in St. Francois Co. MO on 1-22-1854 and both of them died 1-7-1867 (along with Mose's twin) We also believe that it was during this time that spelling of the name Edmunds was changed to Edmonds. We are hoping to verify the names of the parents of Charles Lavender Edmunds as well as their birthdates. At one point, they believed them to be Samuel Edmunds (b. 1795 VA) and Sarah (Sally) Thomas of Amherst Co. Married in 1808, they came to MO in 1824 and settled in St. Francois Co. It seems that they both died in Farmington, St. Francois Co. on 9-29-1845. I have not been able to verify this are exactly how this all ties into William and Sarah (or Sally) Hughes Edmunds. My husband's father remembers going out to a cabin in MO to check on the welfare of "Lav" (probably Lavender) so the names are familiar. Do you have any ideas or information on our branch of the family? Thank you very much in advance. Jan Edmonds
