First White Settler Burial in Box Elder County

"The first death, the result of a harmless dog fight, occurred in Box Elder while the people were living in the 'Old Fort' [later Brigham City]. Nute Clifford and another boy were displaying the prowess of their respective dogs and the young people of the Fort had assembled to watch the encounter. All went well until a bystander became enraged over something, took a stick from the willow fence close by, and struck Nute Clifford a blow over the head, causing his death almost instantly. The assailant, who by the way was a stranger, left the country at once. No legal action was taken because of the fact that there were no civil officers nearer than Ogden City at the time. Mr. Clifford was buried a short distance from the Fort."

Utah Gravestones Organization - The mission of this project is to capture digital images of gravestones of our ancestors. As decades pass, many stones are becoming harder, if not impossible, to read the inscriptions they originally contained. By archiving the images, we can help save these important records and also assist researchers using this valuable resource. Volunteers are needed to help with this project.

Find A Grave - Find a Grave's mission is to find, record and present final disposition information from around the world as a virtual cemetery experience.
