Joseph BURNELL, the son of Joseph BURNELL (1750 - ?) and Hannah PALMER, was baptised at Plympton Erle, Devon on 5 Jan 1775. He married Margaret Cooke VODDEN, daughter of Lawrence VODDEN (1750-1831) and Mary SNELL (1762-1812) at St Giles in the Wood on 12 Apr 1784. Margaret Cooke VODDEN was baptised at St Giles in the Wood on 25 Apr 1790. She died at Great Torrington and was buried at St Giles in the Wood on 11 Jun 1873. Joseph BURNELL died at Great Torrington and was buried at St Giles in the Wood on 21 Nov 1855.

John CLARKE was baptised at St Giles in the Wood on 16 Mar 1788, and was buried there on 19 Nov 1870.

Grace was baptised at St Giles in the Wood on 26 Dec 1742, and was buried there on 20 Mar 1808.

John FRANCIS, the son of John FRANCIS (1769-1845) and Sarah WREYFORD (1772-1845), was baptised at Credition, Devon on 10 Oct 1811. He died at St Giles in the Wood on 31 Dec 1855, and was buried there on 4 Jan 1856. John attended Worcester College, Oxford and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1833. He was Curate of St Andrews, Yarnscombe from 1834 until 1840, and Perpertual Curate of St Giles in the Wood from 1840 until his death.

After the death of his first wife Grace in 1831 he married Dorothy COUCH on 2 Apr 1832. Dorothy had a base son, James, baptised at St Giles in the Wood on 26 Jan 1824 and he is most likely the "dear Child" referred to in the inscription.
