To go to Thornton Church, from Groveton, TX take State Highway 94 west for about 11 miles, & turn to the right at the cemetery sign & Thornton Church Road. From Trinity, TX take State Highway 94 east for about 11 miles, turn left on Thornton Church Road & the cemetery sign. Thornton Church is about two miles down the dirt road on the left.

The Trinity County Cemetery books and Trinity County Beginnings give slightly different versions of the beginning to the Thornton Church "cemetery". The structure next to the fenced cemetery was built in 1911, replacing a previous school/church combination. The history goes back to at least 1872, when a church was built, and later used as a school. In 1886, it was Trinity County Community School Number 6. The land was donated by Clarky Ann Tullos Thornton, wife of James D. Thornton. Thornton Church has an interesting history.
