Dean Cemetery

Historic Texas Cemetery

This cemetery is on private property. From Groveton take SH 94 west 2.8 miles to Joe Hudson Road. Left (south) 1.3 miles to locked gate & entrance to Dean Creek Hunt Club. Follow private gravel road 1.3 miles to gravel road split to west. Follow road as it curves at total of 1.9 miles to cemetery on east side, upon a small rise. It is on a large hunting lease, so no one visits during hunting season without checking first.  The cemetery is also known as John Dean Graveyard.

There is no "official" association for this cemetery, a couple of families make an annual trip to clean the cemetery. One family, years ago, road horses down Caney Creek until they reached the vicinity of the cemetery. More recently, when the bridge is in good repair, they take pickup trucks. We do not recommend regular automobiles to travel these roads, even under the best of conditions. Despite the annual clean-up, the grass becomes knee high to a giraffe within a short time.

There are stacked bricks, or rocks set upright to indicate unmarked graves, many of the people named are from a 1960s plat drawn by two brothers who had accompanied their grandparents riding down Caney Creek.
