Burketown Cemetery

Burketown Cemetery is six miles north of Apple Springs, Texas. From Groveton, Texas to Apple Springs, turn left on FM 2501, go approximately 5 ½ miles, turn left on Burketown Cemetery Road (next to Cedar Hill Ranch), go about 1 mile, turn right on first road which goes to the cemetery.

This cemetery is a genealogist gold mine for the several families! Mr. Gilbert Spring has done a great deal of work to preserve this cemetery and to honor his ancestors. He has replaced numerous old headstones with new ones, procured military markers for those deserving men who served in various wars. Etched on the stones are the names of children and grandchildren of these people, as a way of recording for posterity, the genealogies of Benjamin Burke and Adeline Gandy Odom Smith with her two husbands.

This Cemetery was originally on the property of Benjamin Burke, Sr., who was the first one to be interned in this cemetery. His grave display Citizen of the Republic of Texas and Texas Historic markers. You can read the Texas Historic Marker information here. On a granite marker that Mr. Gilbert Spring raised is the Citizen of the Republic of Texas citation, which reads:

"Dedicated to the memory of Benjamin Burke, Sr., born in Kentucky AD 1793, Married January 19, 1829, came to Texas 1829, served as a volunteer in the War between Texas and Mexico 1836-1837, Died May 4, 1863, age 70 years."  "Susan Ogden Burke, born in Montgomery County, North Carolina, October 21, 1808, died July 27, 1890, buried in Rising Star, Texas, was the daughter of Benjamin Ogden and Susannah Moore Samuel Burke, born circa 1800, married circa 1826, died 1828 and buried in Arkansas, Susan's first husband"  On the back of the large headstone of Benjamin Burke, Sr., are the names of his ten children, their children, and grandchildren.

For the compiled list, both Trinity County Cemeteries ©1980 and the second edition Trinity County Texas Cemeteries © 1992 both published by Trinity County Historical Commission (TCHC) were consulted.  Letty Harrington took photos of the tombstones, which will give you more information. Choose the Burketown Cemetery under the Trinity County TXGenWeb Tombstone Project.
