Boggy Slough Burial Plot

This cemetery is on private property.  To find it, take State Highway 94 east from Apple Springs to within a mile of the Neches River Bridge. On the left you will see a road with a sign indicating Boggy Slough. Stop at the main building for further directions. Boggy Slough is in the North Cedar Creek area, and lies within Temple Eastex property. You will need an escort to access the cemetery. 

In 1870-1880, Sam and Mose Turner had a section or more of land between Apple Springs, Texas and the Neches River. Mose traded his land for horses, wagons, rifles, and provisions and headed back to Alabama, never to be heard of again.  Markers or headstones have disappeared over the years, though it appears it was a community cemetery. It is a short distance from the old Dave and Annie Johnson home place, hence the only remaining headstone. 

Mr. Robert C. Roach had told Mrs. Arminta Roach about this cemetery, saying that as a young boy he had seen three markers. Some sixty years later, Mrs. Lillie Grumbles knew of two markers. As of September 25, 1990, Mr. Donald R. Dietz, Game Management Supervisor, Forest Division of Temple-Eastex, and Mrs. Arminta Roach found evidence of one or more graves within a small fenced area, and the one marker mentioned above. When Chris Dyer, Texas Historical Commission, Cemetery Survey Group and Trinity County Historical Commission members surveyed the cemetery in September 2004. 

To find it, take State Highway 94 east from Apple Springs to within a mile of the Neches River bridge. On the left you will see a road with a sign indicating Boggy Slough. About one and a fourth miles north of State Highway 94.
