Nancy E. Pepper, 88, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004.  Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Rose Hill Cemetery with Doug Gardner, pastor of Full Gospel Mission, officiating. Arrangements are by Kornerstone Funeral Directors.  Mrs. Pepper was born Nov. 3, 1916, in Swisher County. She married Walker Albert "Abe" Pepper on April 13, 1945.  Survivors include three sons, Wayne Byrnes of Albuquerque, N.M., Glyndol Albert Pepper of Vernon and Brady Pepper of Seymour; nine grandchildren.

Jack Sturman, 82, died Friday, June 25, 2004.  Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home.  Mr. Sturman was born May 21, 1922, in Elida, N.M., to John Floyd and Ruby Bell Sturman. He married Wanda Haislip on Dec. 24, 1950, in Portales, N.M.  They moved to Tulia in 1951, where they owned and operated J-Gee Department Store for 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Tulia Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis and the Swisher County Industrial Foundation.  He was a World War II veteran and received the French Commemorative Medal of the 1939-1945 War for his participation in the French Campaign of 1944.  He was preceded in death by his wife on June 3, 2002.  Survivors include a son, Craig Sturman of Amarillo; a daughter, Jeffie Hamar of Clovis, N.M.; two brothers, Bill Sturman of Fresno, Calif., and Frank Sturman of Boise, Idaho; two sisters, Floydene Groves of Las Cruces, N.M., and Janie Sturman of Salina, Calif.; two grandchildren, Cricket Hamar of Los Angeles and Tyler Hamar of Portales.  Amarillo Globe-News, 27 June 2004.

TULIA - Holland Edward Toles Jr., 85, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004.   Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob Lindley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Happy Cemetery by Kornerstone Funeral Directors.  Mr. Toles was born in Centre, Ala., on Aug. 11, 1919. He moved to Happy at age 2 and graduated from Happy High School in 1937. He also attended West Texas State University, where he played for the Buffalo basketball team as a freshman. He served with the Air Corps during World War II.  Mr. Toles entered the grain business in Happy in 1946 as president and co-owner of Harman-Toles Grain Co. In 1956, he moved to Tulia when Harman-Toles opened a second location in Tulia. Other locations were later added at Union, Wayside and Arney. He served as a member of the board of directors for Panhandle Grain Dealers Association in 1958.  Mr. Toles was also a founder and co-owner of one of the Panhandle's largest feedyards, Swisher County Cattle Co. Mr. Toles had farming interests in Swisher County and served as a charter member of the board of directors for Tulia Savings and Loan. For several years beginning in the late 1960s, Mr. Toles served on the board of directors for Mesa Petroleum Co., a NYSE company then based in Amarillo.  Mr. Toles was active in community affairs throughout his life. He was a city commissioner in Happy from 1950 to 1954 and was mayor of Happy from 1954 to 1955. He also served six years on the board of trustees for Tulia ISD, where he served two years as president. He was the first chairman of Tulia Housing Authority and over the years, he served as chairman of the Tulia Parks Board, as a member of Swisher County Airport board, the board of trustees for First United Methodist Church of Tulia and West Texas State University Ex-Students Association.  He married Mary Del Johnston of Happy in 1949.  He was preceded in death by his brother, John Frank Toles of Happy. Survivors include his wife; a son, Ed III of Houston; two daughters, Tanya Lott and Labob Ebeling and husband, Allan, all of Georgetown; two grandsons, Holland Toles IV of Austin and Slayton Ebeling of Georgetown; and four granddaughters, Britni Ebeling, Andi Lott, Calli Ebeling and Raini Lott, all of Georgetown.   Amarillo Globe-News, 16 November 2006.
