OFFICIAL TEXAS CEMETERY VISITATION DAY SUNDAY, APRIL 2, 2017

Many of Texas’ 50,000 cemeteries in danger. Most Texans pass by cemeteries every day, but might not realize the neglect that puts them in danger of description. Cleaning a cemetery is preserving a cemetery!

Save Texas Cemeteries, Inc. celebrates two decades of sponsoring clean-up days for Texas. The first Sunday in April and the first Sunday in October were declared OFICIAL CEMETERY VISITATION DAYS by the 75th Texas Legislature in 1997 and for the year April 2, 2017 will be a clean-up day across Texas. This official day encourages the public in all 254 Texas counties to participate in this preservation effort. For Sunday, April 2, 2017 cemeteries should be open by 9 a.m. and stay available until 6 p.m.

A small cemetery, that is covered with weeds, is easily bulldozed when land clearing takes place. Every year in Texas cemeteries are destroyed by unscrupulous developers who bulldoze over the tombstones. The best way to not let this happen is to keep the grounds clean and visible.

STC works to be sure the public is allowed onto property where a cemetery is located and having these two official visitation days gives rules for both the visitor and land owner. Here is an official form with complete guidelines.

STC is a non-profit organization established in 1994 to preserve Texas’s 50,000 cemeteries and burial sites. About 95% of Texas cemeteries are public and should be available to citizens.
