Military Records

Civil War pensioners in Sherman County
The Texas state goverment awarded pensions to Civil War veterans and widows between 1899 and 1975. A complete statewide index can be found on the Texas State Library website, along with information on how to order a copy of the pension file.

World War I Selective Service draft registrations
During World War I there were three draft registrations. The first, on June 5, 1917, was for all men between the ages of 21 and 31. The second, on June 5, 1918, registered those who attained age 21 after June 5, 1917. The third registration was held on September 12, 1918, for men age 18 through 45. This transcription gives only the draftee's name, date of birth, location of birth, ethnic group, and location of registration. Additional information on the actual card may include the registrant's address, the name and address of next of kin, occupation, work address, and physical description. Registration cards have been microfilmed and are available from the National Archives and from many libraries.

World War II Army Casualties
Sherman County names from the World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing Army and Army Air Forces Personnel from Texas, 1946. Information provided includes serial number, rank and type of casualty. Land Records

Land Survey Abstract Indices of the Original Land Owners of Texas
Sherman County was first surveyed in the 1880s using a block/section grid. Every other section was awarded to a railroad in return for doing the survey. These records represent the initial transfer of Sherman County lands into private hands. Early maps and documents showing the first surveys of Sherman County can be found on the Texas General Land Office website.


Vital Records
Texas began registering births and deaths in 1903. Statewide registration of marriages began in 1966. The following transcriptions are taken from statewide computer indexes; indexes for earlier time periods are available at many libraries. Copies of birth and death certificates can be ordered through the Texas Department of Health or through the local registrar.
