MCMAHAN, YOUNG posted by Paul McAfee on Wednesday, May 28, 1997

I am going to be researching the YOUNG family, specifically the line that includes Acton YOUNG, son-in-law of Samuel Doak MCMAHAN of Sabine County, and the .ancestors of Samuel's wife, Phoebe YOUNG. I think there were descendents of Acton Young in the Woodville area at one time and probably some still there. One name I am definitely interested in is Miss Eliza Duvall YOUNG, a neice of Phoebe YOUNG and who lived in Medon (Madison County) Tennessee around 1840. Thanks very much.

MEADOR posted by Micheal McGreevy on Friday, June 6, 1997

My great great grandfather, Dr. Richard A. MEADOR moved to Milam in 1844 and practiced medecine there until he died in 1853. In 1850, his daughter Sarah died and was burried in the garden of their home. Dr. MEADOR removed his son Charles' remains from their resting place and reinterred them next to Sarah's.This site is now the Meador Family Cemetary north of Milam on Hwy. 87.It is on the register of the Texas Historical Commission and is maintained by the MEADOR Family Cemetary Association. P.S. An excellent article on this family appeared in The Sabine County Times on March 20,1996 ( page 17).

My ggg grandfather, Edward WHITE, was born in Va. in 1781 and died in Sabine County in 1870.One of his sons, Henry Strickland White established one of the first churches in Sabine County, was a Mason, owned the White Plantation west of Hemphill, and was the last "paderos" for the return of run-away-slaves in the county.

BUCKLEY, ERWIN posted by Micheal McGreevy on Friday, June 6, 1997

My grandfather was John Preston ERWIN, Sr. For many years he and my grandmother, Clemence Eloise BUCKLEY ERWIN owned and operated the J.P. Erwin Grocery , feed store, and Texaco station in Hemphill. In his youth, he was the oiler at the old Knox Sawmill. After retiring from the grocery, he built and maintained many rent houses in the area and owned a lot property. Preston and Clemence had four children who all still reside in Texas with the youngest, William Buckley "Joe" ERWIN still residing in Hemphill. My grandmother is a lifelong resident of Hemphill. Her family (BUCKLEY) has lived in Sabine County since before the Civil War and many are burried in the Old Hemphill Cemetary and the Meador Family Cemetary in Milam.

ARMSTRONG, DOWLING, SPRINGER posted by Micheal McGreevy on Saturday, June 7, 1997

I was thrilled to find this site. My mothers family's roots in Sabine County date back to before Republic of Texas times. Although I found few of my ancestral surnames, I have made submissions to get them added. My particular interest is the Civil War. I am adjutant of Dick DOWLING Camp 1295 Sons of Confederate Veterans in Beaumont. My great grandmother, Susan ARMSTRONG SPRINGER was the last surviving Civil War widow in Sabine County, and I am researching six of my ancestors from Hemphill and Milam who served in the Confederate armed forces. Due to the loss of the Sabine County records when the courthouse burned, this is a slow task as you no doubt know. I would love to see something on Sabine County's Civil War history included on this web site. If I can help, let me know. My camp's homepage is located at http://members.tripod.com/~csa/ if you would care to check it out. Keep up the good work.

Researching WINDHAM family in east texas. Gr-grandfather, Thomas Henry WINDHAM ( b. 22 May 1855, Alab. d. 7 Mar 1929, Tx.) moved to Shelby Cty and then to Sabine Cty (Bronson). He travelled and preached all around San Aug., Sabine, Shelby & Newton ctys. Married to Ida STEPHENS / STEVENS. They are buried in Woodlawn Cem. in Timpson. If anyone knows any history of Blue Springs, Tx., please contact me. Thomas Henry WINDHAM performed the cornerstone dedication ceremony for a church (probably Methodist) at Blue Springs in Sept. 1923. In the vault of the cornerstone, he placed several family books and Bibles and a written history of his life that I very important to me. Blue Springs is no longer on the map and I'm trying to find out what happened to the church and get my hands on the things in the cornerstone vault. Please help. Thanks, Steve McAlister.
