SMITH posted by Katherine Freistat on Sunday, January 5, 1997

I am pretty new at this internet thing but have been working on my family tree since 1983. I am a descendent of William H. SMITH, sheriff of Sabine County in the late 1800s. William H. was the son of John Bailey SMITH and grandson of John E. and Mary SMITH who arrived in San Augustine/Sabine County in the early 1820s. I live in Florida now and have not been able to physically visit the town of Hemphill where I understand the Daughters of Republic of Texas have put together a museum in the old jail house. I was wondering if you would have any information on this family that you could share with me. I would be happy to submit what I have. Thank you for any help you can give me. I can be reached e-mail [email protected]

CHISHOLM, MCMAHAN posted by Paul McAfee on Thursday, January 16, 1997

I am a descendent of Samuel Doak McMAHAN, founder of McMahan Chapel and an early settler of Sabine County. I have quite a lot of information about him. Enoch P. CHISHOLM, a son-in-law of McMAHAN became a Methodist circuit rider and moved away from the Sabine area soon after the Texas Revolution. I'd like to hear from anyone with information about these names or from anyone who may have questions I can answer.

ALLBRIGHT, LOCKMAN, RANDOLPH posted by Gail Backus on Sunday, February 9, 1997

Searching for parents/siblings of Jane Francis LOCKMAN, b. 1842, TX. She married Jacob ALLBRIGHT on 21 December 1853 in Burleson Co., TX. Recently received information that Jane Francis may have been a RANDOLPH or LOCKMAN. Marriage certificate is definitely LOCKMAN. In 1850 Burleson there is an Elizabeth RANDOLPH with a daughter Jane RANDOLPH, age 8. Living very near other families that are related. Also, IGI entry shows Elizabeth, b Sabine or Milam Co., and stated Jane RANDOLPH married Jake ALLBRIGHT. There was also family legend that Jane Francis LOCKMAN was stolen by Indians, but dates given were around 1885. She would have been rather old to be stolen and kept by Indians. Was it her mother who was taken? Was Jane Francis part Indian? Was she a RANDOLPH or LOCKMAN? Jane is buried in Kerr Co., TX, She died in 1910. Rumored that she was buried outside the fence because it was thought she was Indian. Jane Francis is a mystery that we would like to solve. Can anyone out there help? Anything would be appreciated.

MORRIS posted by Doris Webb Dunn on Monday, February 10, 1997

I am trying to find information on my ggggrandfather Shadrac MORRIS, who I am told received a land grant from the Mexican government in Sabine County at the mouth of Palo Gaucho Creek on the Sabine River. He and his family fled Texas to Louisiana during the "run-away scrape" and lived there until sometime after 1850. I am told upon his return he donated two acres of land for the town of Sabine. I am looking for information to verify this and am also trying to find descendents. He had sons Benjamin George, Amon Perry, John, William Shadrack, Christopher and Fountain and daughters as well. Five of the sons were killed during the Civil War. My gggrandfather Amon Perry MORRIS is buried at Galveston, Texas where he died in the Civil War. Would appreciate hearing from anyone that may have information to share on this family. Shadrach was born in North Carolina(Now Tennessee). Thank you.
