MRS. B. CARTER of HEMPHILL, DIES

Services Will Be Held At 2 P.M. Today at Baptist Church

HEMPHILL, Sept. 24 (Spl) – Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday for Mrs. Beulah E. Carter, 63, who died at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday after a short illness.  Services will be under the direction of the Starr Funeral Home with the Rev. Clarence Howell officiating, assisted by Ronald Spears. The body will remain at the residence until time for services.  Burial will be in Hemphill Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be C. C. Rice, D. B. Speights, George Morris, Phillip Gandy, O. S. Chambers, Willie Self, Julian Smith, and J. H. Minton.  Mrs. Carter was a member of the Baptist Church.
She and her husband, Brad Carter, owned and operated Carter’s Café here since 1937, and leased it only two months ago when she became ill. Prior to this, they owned and operated the Streetcar-Barn Café in Beaumont from 1935 to 1937.  Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Horton and Mrs. Lucille Melding, both of Hemphill; two brothers, Benton Carlton of Hemphill and Alfred Carlton of Ranger, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Ollie Chops of Houston; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

CASSIDY

J. H. Cassidy, 48 Dies Suddenly Rites Held Mon.

James Howard Cassidy, Sr., 48, of Hemphill, died suddenly of a heart attack at 2 a.m. Sunday. He was a native of Louisiana and a resident of Hemphill the past 19 years. He was a saw filer and formerly worked for the Joe Smith Lumber Co. at San Augustine. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Sturges Mill Church with the Rev. Rufus Dickey and the Rev. B. Miller officiating. Burial was in the Hemphill Cemetery under the direction of the Starr Funeral Home. Masonic graveside rites were observed. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Margie Cassidy; two daughters, Elaine Cassidy of Houston, and Kathy Cassidy of Hemphill; five sons, James Howard Jr., Joe Waymon, Paul Rodney, Joe Ed and Jack Friday Cassidy, all of Hemphill; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Cassidy Sr. of Hemphill; two sisters, Mrs. H. Favor of Houston and Mrs. B.J. Woodfin of Ft. Worth; two brothers, B. M. Cassidy of Logansport, La., and J. B. Cassidy, Jr. of the Phillippines.

CAUSEY

John S. Causey Dies Monday

John Sidney Causey, 73, suffered a fatal heart attack Monday at 11:45 a.m. while cutting wood near Poye bridge over Palo Gaucho Creek.  At the time of the attack, his wife was fishing in the creek nearby. Not hearing him fro sometime, she went to investigate and found him where he had fallen.  Funeral services for Mr. Causey were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel in Hemphill. The Rev. Thomas Bailey, a Lufkin Pentecostal minister, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Charles Murphy, Pentecostal minister of Leesville, La. and the Rev. Clarence Howell, pastor of First Baptist Church, Hemphill. Burial was in the Hemphill Cemetery.  Pallbearers were C. C. Russell, Tommy Bragg, Chester Bragg, Jim Wilson, E. E. Maxey and D. B. Speights.  Survivors are his wife, Nettie Causey of Hemphill, two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Wallace, Albuequerque, N. M., and Mrs. Margie Coats, Shreveport, La., three sons, James Causey, Hemphill, Rufus Causey, Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, and Sidney Causey, Jr., Seattle, Wash., 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

CHAPMAN

Final Rites For Jesse Chapman Held Sunday

Funeral services for Jesse Lee Chapman, 44, were held Sunday at 2:30 p. m. at the Oak Hill Church with the Rev. W. T. Love, pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church, officiating. Assisting was the Rev. Clarence Howell, pastor of First Baptist Church, Hemphill and the Rev. Noel Hammock, pastor of Little Flock Baptist Church. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill.
Mr. Chapman died suddenly at 10:45 a.m. Friday in Hemphill Hospital after suffering a heart attack. A mechanic by trade, Chapman had work (sp) for Reeves Chevrolet Co., Hemphill Motor Co., and U. S. Forest Service in Hemphill. At the time of his death he was employed as operator at the Halbert Feed Mill in Bronson. He was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Inez Chapman of Hemphill; his mother, Mrs. C. W. Chapman of Hemphill; three sisters, Mrs. Abbie Horn of Milam, Mrs. Mary Greenlea and Jewel Chapman, both of Houston; two brothers, Albert W. Chapman of Hemphill and Danny L. Chapman of Topeka, Kansas.

CONNER

Mrs. Ada Conner Dies July 7

Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Frances Conner, 76, were held Tuesday, July 8, at 4 p.m. at the East Mayfield Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. L. R. Dunn, officiating. Assisting was the Rev. Dan Marshall, pastor of the Jasper Baptist Church. Burial was in the Springhill cemetery under the direction of the Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill.
Mrs. Conner died suddenly July 7 at her home here at 1:20 p.m. from a heart attack. She was a native of Sabine County and had lived here all her life.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Obie Kindley, Mrs. Floyd Lott and Mrs. Ivy Ferguson, all of Hemphill; Mrs. Marvin Herndon of Huntington and Mrs. A. B. Jenkins of Beaumont; two sons, Alton Conner of Hemphill, and Robert Conner of Beaumont; 24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services For P. M. Coussons Held Saturday

Pole Mason Coussons, 75, died Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Baptist Hospital, Beaumont, after a lengthy llness. Mr. Coussons was a retired banker. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church Hemphill. The Rev. Clarence Howell officiated. Burial was in the Hemphill Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Carrie Coussons of Hemphill; two daughters, Miss Joy Coussons of Hemphill and Mrs. Evon Leediker of Cleveland, Texas; two sons, T. Coussons of Alto and Bobby Coussons of Hemphill; one sister, Mrs. Fannie Pou of Tenaha; one brother, Goodrich Coussons of Hemphill, and six grandchildren.
Pall bearers were Horace Pratt, Abb Howard, V. A. Jones Sr., Deas Fuller, E. T. Killion, C. C. Rice and James Fuller.

Coussons

W. E. Coussons, Prominent Local Citizen, Dies

William Ersel Coussons, 62, of Hemphill, died Friday at 6:15 a.m. in his home of a heart attack, while preparing to go to work. This was his second heart attack. He had one five weeks ago. He had returned to working part time at his store a week ago last Monday. Mr. Coussons was a native of Hemphill and was a prominent merchant and businessman. He owned and operated the W. E. Coussons store in Hemphill since 1929, in addition to other real property. He was, at the time of his death, a director of the First State Bank of Hemphill. A veteran of World War I, her served overseas and was in France when the Armistice was declared. Mr. Coussons was a member of the Sabine Post 197, American Legion. He had also served as a Hemphill city councilman from 1940 to 1952; as a member of the draft board, and as a trustee of the Hemphill Independent School District. He was a member of the Little Fowler Masonic Lodge. Funeral serviced were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Lovis Dunn, pastor of the East Mayfield Baptist Church officiating, assisted by the Rev. Clarence Howell, pastor of the first Baptist Church of Hemphill and the Rev. C. A. Bly. Burial was in the Hemphill Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Novie Pratt Coussons; three daughters, Mrs. Dan Williams of Hemphill, Mrs. Joe Neal of San Augustine, and Russell Duke of Indiana, Pa; three sons, Dr. Charles Coussons of Nacogdoches, Sammy Coussons of Hemphill and Paul Coussons of Houston; three sisters, Mrs. Dalton Smith of Hemphill, Mrs. John Bowers and Mrs. Vincent Kickerillo, both of Houston; two brothers, L. A. Coussons of Blythe, Calif., and Luman Coussons and 16 grandchildren.

CURRIE

Mrs. Currie, 77 Dies Saturday in Orange

Funeral services for Mrs. Bethel S. Currie, 77, of Orange were held in Orange Monday morning at 10:00. The body was then brought to Hemphill where graveside services were held at 2 p.m. in the Hemphill Cemetery.  Pallbearers were grandsons.
Mrs. Currie died in the Orange Memorial Hospital at 5:30 pm. Saturday following a stroke which she suffered the week before.  Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. M. C. Self of Orange; four sons, Allen B. Currie of Sulphur, La., Johnnie B. Currie of Orange, Bethel S. Currie, Jr. of Port Neches and James R. Currie of Beaumont. She is also survived by a brother, sister and numerous grandchildren and other relatives. She was a resident of Hemphill and was related to Mrs. J. D. Huff, Charles Huff and John R. Parker, all of Hemphill.

FINAL RITES for Mrs. CURRIE, 84, Held Thursday

     Funeral services for Mrs. Frances E. (Montgomery) Currie, 84, were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 27, in Starr Funeral Home Chapel, Hemphill, with the Rev. Clarence Howell of Boling officiating, assisted by the Rev. W. T. Love, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church. Burial was in Hemphill Cemetery with Starr Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.Pallbearers, all grandsons, were William A. Parker, John R. Parker, Charles B. Huff, Daniel V. Currie, Van A. Currie, Robert L. Currie Jr., William M. Currie, and Charles Todd Stinson.Mrs. Currie died at the Jasper Nursing Center Tuesday, May 25, after a long illness.Survivors include two sons, Oscar S. Currie of Buna and Robert L. Currie of Fort Worth; three daughters, Mrs. J. D. Huff of Hemphill, Mrs. Ardath Waldrop of Jasper, and Mrs. Cecil O. Stinson of Vidor.

Frances Elizabeth Montgomery was born Sept. 4, 1886 in Newton Co., Texas. She married Van Buren "Dutch" Currie July 29, 1900 in Merryville, Beauregard Parish, Louisiana. She died May 25, 1971. Three sons preceded her in death, Arthur Currie, William Francis "Buster" Currie and Van Buren "Pete" Currie, Jr. - KPM

CURRIE

Funeral Services for W. F. Currie Held Friday

Funeral services for W. F. (Bill) Currie, 58, of Jasper were held at 3 p.m. Friday in J. O. Stringer Funeral Home of Jasper. The Rev. William Drake officiated assisted by the Rev. Milton Jordan. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery with nephews as pallbearers.
Currie died unexpectedly at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in Mary Dickerson Hospital in Jasper.
He was a member of the Frist (sp) Presbyterian Church of Jasper and was a veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Elks Lodge and Findley Masonic Lodges and all Scottish Rite Bodies. For 34 years he was associated with Marathon Oil Co. and for the past six years, was associated with Pat Adams Real Estate Agency in Jasper.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty Currie; his mother, Mrs. V. B. Currie of Jasper; two brothers, Oscar Currie of Buna and Robert L. Currie of Fort Worth, and three sisters, Mrs. J. D. Huff of Hemphill, Mrs. Ardath Waldrop of Jasper and Mrs. C. O. Stinson of Vidor.
