Marion C. Campbell
Springfield, Ohio, plant retiree lived in Brookfield Marion C. Campbell, 320
Golf Drive, Brookfield, died at 3:50 a.m. Sunday (7-22-01) in the hospital of
Sharon Regional Health System. He was 98.Mr. Campbell was born in Emory,
Texas, on June 27, 1903, a son of Howard W. and Dora H. Miller Campbell.
He moved to Brookfield in 1995 from Springfield, Ohio. Mr. Campbell had been
a turret lathe operator for Steel Products Engineering Co. in Springfield for
33 years. He retired in 1969. He was of the Methodist faith and was a member
of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 352 in Jamestown, Ohio.He also belonged to
Local 1192 of United Auto Workers. Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife, the
former Elizabeth "Lena" Matlock, whom he married April 26, 1924. Other survivors
include: a son, Marion Francis Campbell and his wife, Bertha, Springfield; three
daughters, Mrs. Roger (Helen Jane) Bayes, Springfield; Carol Honel-Batchelder,
Brookfield; and Miriam Colleen DuCharme, Salina, Kansas; a brother, Roy Stanley
Campbell, Mineola, Texas; a sister, Helen Herring, Garland, Texas; 17 grandchildren;
27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.He was preceded in
death by his parents; a son, Vernon Campbell; a daughter, Shirley Campbell;
three brothers, Aldon, Harold and Homer Campbell; and two sisters, Marjorie
Sanford and Grace Longbrake.

Austin Cooke Dead
Wm. Cooke received a message Sunday morning telling of the death of his brother,
Austin Cooke, which occurred at 12:05 o'clock Sunday morning at his home in
Baird. Mr. Cooke received the message too late to attend the funeral, which
occurred Sunday evening. Austin Cooke was one of the pioneer business men in
Emory, and was known to most all of the old settlers in Rains county. He was
sick only about 2 hours, and died with something like heart trouble. The Leader
offers its sincerest sympathy to his brother, our fellow townsman.

Mrs. Freeman Drowned
Mrs. A.R. Freeman was drowned in the Canadian River near Porum, Okla., the 26th
of April. Mrs. Freeman, with her husband and little daughter were fishing and
while Mr. Freeman and the child were off some distance hunting bait, she fell
into the river and her body carried 100 yards down the stream, where it was
recovered six days later. Mrs. A.L. Cates of the Cold Hill neighborhood, mother
of Mrs. Freeman, was notified and got to Oklahoma in time for the burying. Mr.
Freeman and little daughter and Mrs. Cates returned to Rains County Wednesday
and will remain here awhile. The Leader sympathizes with the bereaved family.

The Leader learns through Judge W.H. Clendenin of the death
of Chas. Landers at Mineral Wells a few days ago. He was for several
years a resident of Emory and married Miss Eunice Gee. He has a number
of friends here who will be grieved to learn of his death.
D. F.Higginbotham, former well known citizen of the Bonanza community, died onAug. 13, 1925, in San Angelo where his family went several months ago onaccount of this health. Born in Rains County, east of Emory, Texas, Jan.19, 1873. The remains were brought back to Sulphur Springs and carried to Liberty (Hopkins Co) where burial took place. He was 52 years old and leaves a wife,one son, and five daughters. One child preceded him death. In hisyouthful age he moved from near Emory to Bonanza, in Hopkins County. He married Miss Mary Campbell in the year 1902.

Mr. D. J. Nabors, formerly of this place, but for the past several years
a citizen of Tupelo, Oklahoma, died very suddenly at his home in that place
last Monday. He had been in bad health for some time, but recently got better
and was able to go to town. Mr. Nabors was about 65 years having spent the major
portion of his life in Rains county and in the edge of Hopkins County, near
Bonanza community. He had been married three times, five children surviving
him by the first marriage, namely: W. I., D. L., and Rogers Nabors, and Mrs.
D. S. Nettles, Emory; and Homer Nabors, Fort Worth. One son, D. J., Jr., survives
by the second marriage,who was making his home with his father at the time of
the latter's death. There were no children, but he is survived by this third
wife. His remains were buried beside his second wife and his little daughter
who was burned to death a few years ago at Tupelo, Oklahoma. His three son sand
daughter from here attended the funeral at Tupelo.

Services for Lee M. Fitzgerald, 83, of Emory, were held
at 2 p.m. Monday in the Emory Baptist Church with Rev. William Potts officiating.
Burial was in the Greenview Cemetery. He died Saturday at a Tyler hospital.
Born in Hopkins County on September 13, 1910, he was the son of William Abram
and Rose Ella Yarborough Fitzgerald. He married Audrey Mae Potts in Hugo, Oklahoma
on April 27, 1931. He was a retired welder for a Dallas based freight lines,
a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and a member of the Mars Hill Masonic
Lodge in Emory. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Dennis Fitzgerald of Athens
and Dean Fitzgerald of Kerrville; three daughters, Sandra Weatherford of Emory,
Linda Knight of Longview and Peggy Acosta of Red Oak; thirteen grandchildren
and eighteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two
brothers and two sisters. Tapp Funeral Home of Sulphur Springs was in charge
of arrangements.

Reath Driver, 78, Eldorado, died Tuesday at Harmon County
Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are with Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Reath Idessa Driver, former Eldorado resident, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000,
at Harmon Memorial Hospital at the age of 78. Funeral services are set
for 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Eldorado with Dr. Dean
Goodfellow and Alan Egerton officiating.Interment will be at Eldorado Cemetery
under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Driver had been a resident
of Colonial Manor II Nursing Home for the past 21 months.She was born Oct.
8, 1921, in Emory, Texas, to C.C. and Hattie Mae (Pennybaker) York.
She married Oran L. Driver on Oct. 22, 1938, in Lawton. She lived in the
Eldorado area for the past 61 years. She was a member of the Baptist church
for more than 60 years.Driver was preceded in death by her parents; one
sister, MarjorieWainscott; one daughter, Norma Jean Egerton and one greatgrandchild.
Survivors include: her husband, Oran Driver of Eldorado; one daughter,
Karen Choat of Quanah, Texas; two brothers, Cortez and Douglas York, both
of Amarillo, Texas; five grandchildren and 13great grandchildren.
Doris Walker Belk
Doris Musette Walker Belk, 77, of Wichita Falls died Wednesday, Aug.
5, 1998.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the University United Methodist
Church Chapel with Dr. Larry George and Dr. Bob Lee officiating. Graveside
services will be at 3 p.m. today in Memorial Park in Oklahoma City with
the Rev. Wayne Jarboe officiating. Arrangements are under the direction
of Hampton Vaughan Downtown Chapel.
Mrs. Belk was born March 6, 1921, in Emory, Texas. She and Roy
D. Belk were married May 28, 1938. He died Nov. 23, 1995. She graduated
from Central High School in Oklahoma City and from Bay City College of
Medical Assistants in 1968. She was a co-owner and operator of Belk Enterprises
– Texas Mobile Homes and Texas Travel Trailers in Lewisville, Texas. She
was the founder of Land of Little People Nursery in Oklahoma City. She
was a member of University United Methodist Church Friendship Class and
Beta Sigma Phi.
Survivors include two daughters, Alice Oden of Wichita Falls and Patricia
Trout of Highland Village, Texas; two sisters, Lila Norriss of Wichita
Falls and Ruth Jarboe of Lake Texhoma, Texas; a brother, Carl L. Walker
of Lake Eufaula, Okla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
and a great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to University United Methodist Church or American
Diabetes Association.

Danielsville
J.A. Dake, 77, of 65 Sherwood Circle, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000.
A native of Emory, Texas, Mr. Dake was a son of the late Charlie
and Cynthia Lot Martin Dake. He was a Danielsville resident for 21 years,
was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Danielsville Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Dake; four daughters, Johnnie Dake
Shannon and Linda Baird, both of Danielsville, Carol Dake, Hull, and Betty
LaRue, Paris, Texas; seven sons, James Dake, Comer, Tony L. Dake, Elberton,

William Clayton CARTHAGE, Mo. — William H. Clayton, 87,
Carthage, died at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at a local nursing
home after a short illness.Mr. Clayton was born Jan. 25, 1911, at Emory,
Texas. He was a machinist in the aircraft industry. He lived in the
Los Angeles and Sacramento, California areas from 1945 to 1991, when he
moved to Carthage.He married Sara Nuse on May 28, 1960, at Las Vegas, Nev.
She survives.Additional survivors include two daughters, Elsie Lunsford
and Billie Wilson, both of Boyd, Texas; two sons, Harold Clayton, Las Vegas,
and Jerry Clayton, Reno, Nev.; a stepson, Ed Nuse, Carthage; 8 grandchildren;
seven step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.Graveside
services will be at 10 a.m. today at Park Cemetery, Carthage, with the

Dorothy Feiner, 70
RAMONA ---- Dorothy W. Feiner, 70, died Sunday, April 9, 2000,
at a local hospital.
Born Sept. 21, 1929, in Ballinger, Texas, she lived in Ramona for 23
years. She was a real estate agent for 15 years, last working for Coldwell
Banker. She was a member of the Real Estate Association and the First Christian
Church of Ramona.
Mrs. Feiner is survived by her husband of 36 years, Jerry Feiner of
Ramona; father W. J. Wheatley of Emory, Texas; daughter Jean Roberts
of San Diego; brother James Wheatley of Duncanville, Texas; and sisters
Wilma Wade of Emory, Fran Sime of San Diego and Patricia Wohlheuter of
Atlanta.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 14, at Ramona
Nuevo Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Bill Zabriskie officiating.
The family suggests memorial donations to the First Christian Church,

CRANE---- Ray Yancey, 81, of Odessa, and formerly of Crane,
died on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Odessa Hospice House. Graveside services
will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at the Crane County Cemetery
with the Rev. David Howard officiating. Services are under the direction
of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Mr. Yancey was born to Carl and Fannie Hughey Yancey on March 23, 1920,
in Emory, Texas. He married Lila Lee Earp on March 23, 1943. in
Crane. He was a World War II Air Force veteran. He was a lease operator
for Mobile Oil Company for 31 years in Crane and Midland before his retirement.
He was a member of the West Odessa First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Carolyn Raye
Yancey-Bostwick on Nov. 25, 1991, a brother, Alvin D. Yancey, and a sister,
Rubye Robinson.
Survivors include his wife, Lila Yancey, of Odessa; a son, Bryan Lee
Yancey and his wife, Becky, of Odessa; three grandchildren, John Cal Bostwick,
of Frisco, Texas, Sonya Renee Bostwick Northcott, of Midland and Kevin
Wayne Yancey, of Odessa; four great-grandchildren, Courtney Leigh Bostwick

Services for Helen Boatright of Rt. w, Emory, were held at
2 p.m. Friday, November 5, at the Emory Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Barksdale
and Rev. Rodney Williams officiating. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m.
Saturday, November 6, at Rest Haven Memorial Park, Shawnee, Oklahoma. Mrs. Boatright
passed away Wednesday, November 3. Born September 8, 1908, she was the daughter
of John Ellis and Sophia Elizabeth Cherry Shepard. She married E.D. Boatright
on July 4, 1959. She was employed by the Shawnee School System for a number
of years, was a real estate broker, and was employed at the Justice of the Peace
in Emory for a while. She was an active member of the Emory Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, James Edward Smith; 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E.D. "Tubby" Boatright.
Pallbearers were Homer Robertson, Bill Roberts, Cass Cooper, Norwin Lennon,
Leroy Potts, and Allen Stuart. Honorary pallbearer was Leon Gowin.

Vernon Dexter Steverson
1909 – 2004
Funeral services for Vernon D. Steverson, 95, of Los Angeles, California, were
held at 9:00 a.m., June 7, 2004, at Inglewood Park Mortuary, Manchester Chapel,
Inglewood, California. Rev. Leroy Brown officiated. Bret and Kurt Ivie, Jerome
Myles, Shawn, Brennon and Damien Ivie, Keith and Mark Ivie, Jacque Shirley,
Rick and Ardie Jr., Ivie served as honorary pallbearers. Interment followed
in Inglewood Park Cemetery. Mr. Steverson was born February 2, 1909, in Athens.
His mother Luesettie and stepfather, Mr. Criner, raised him and his sister,
Marie Steverson Collins. He graduated from Blackshear High School, Athens, in
1928, attended Prairie View College and earned his Bachelors Degree at Texas
College, Tyler, in 1936. He married Odell Ivie in 1935
and taught in the Sand Flat School in Emory for a time. They
moved to Los Angeles in 1942, where he was employed at the Long Beach Naval
Shipyard for the duration of World War II. Afterwards he attended Moler Barber
College and became a Master Barber and later owned and operated a barber shop
in the West Adams District of Los Angeles. He later studied at the University
of Southern California and the University of California at Long Beach and obtained
a Teacher’s Credential in Special Education. He taught for the Los Angeles
Unified School District until retirement in 1972. Mr. Steverson was a member
of St. Marks United Methodist Church in Los Angeles. Survivors include his wife
of 69 years; cousins: Betty Lee Jackson of Athens, Leverne Jones of Houston,
Fay Gentry of Compton, California; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded
in death by his sister, Marie, and a niece, Joyce Ann.

Katheryn L. Hays
1923-2004
Funeral services for Katheryn L Hays were held at 12:00 noon, Friday, July 9,
at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel, Dallas. Mrs. Hays was born July 27, 1923, and
passed away Monday, July 5, 2004. She was a former resident of Rains
County. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bruce (Sonny) C.
Hays; son, Terry W. Hays; sister, Delores M. Carter; five grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren. Laurel Land Funeral Home Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Marshall
1944-2004
Funeral services for Shirley Ann Marshall, 60, of Point were
held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 7, at Peters Funeral Home Chapel with Rev.
Danny Carter officiating. Burial followed at Memoryland Memorial Park. Mrs.
Marshall died July 4, 2004, at a local hospital. She was born April 22, 1944,
in Greenville to Truman and Mary Williams Tate. She was married to Allan J.
Marshall on Nov. 20, 1999, in Campbell. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist
Church of Campbell and a member of the church choir. She retired from Texas
A&M University-Commerce after 28 years of service in the John Gee Library.
She is survived by her husband of Point; a daughter, Tami Keirn of Campbell;
a son, Michael Wallace of Campbell; two stepdaughters, Shelby Marshall of El
Con, Calif., and Terrie Marshall of Santa, Calif.; two sisters, Janis Edwards
and husband Cliff of Greenville and Dianne Francis and husband Garland of Alexandria,
Va.; two brothers, Truman Tate of Grapeland and Rickey Tate of Tyler; one aunt,
Patricia Connally of Richardson; two grandchildren, Owen Bigler IV of Paris
and Bradley Bigler of Campbell; and a special caregiver and friend, Tammy Miller
of Point. Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother;
and a sister. Memorials may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Melba Hale Bullard West
1925-2004
Melba Hale Bullard West, 78, of Beaumont, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Memorial
Herman Baptist Hospital of Beaumont. She was the daughter of Thomas Hale and
Cora Hart Hale, born October 30, 1925, in Hunt County. She grew up and attended
schools in Rains County. She was married to Bruce Bullard. They were
residents of Emory and the owners of B&B Foods there. Bruce died
in 1988, and in 1990 she married Harlan West of Sulphur Springs. She was preceded
in death by her parents, her husbands, Bruce Bullard and Harlan West; sisters,
Edith Kirby and Thelma Samples; and brothers, Claude, Albert, and John Hale.
She is survived by her son, Marvin Bullard and his wife Linda of Beaumont; granddaughter,
Kelly Bullard Wilson and her husband John of Dallas; grandson, John Seth Bullard
and his wife Patricia of Beaumont; great-grandsons, John Stackhouse Wilson,
Jr. and Gray Birdwell Wilson of Dallas; brother, Carson Hale of Rowlett; sisters,
Stella Shipley of Greenville, Pauline Smith of Dallas, and Nina Phillips of
Bedford. She was a member of North End Baptist Church in Beaumont. A graveside
service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the Emory City
Cemetery with visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Wilson Orwosky
Funeral Home in Emory. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Broussard’s
Mortuary in Beaumont. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Melba’s memory

1914-2004
Funeral services for Lois Malone, 90, Emory, were held at Wilson-Orwosky Funeral
Home Chapel, at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 15, with Rev. William J. Vickery
officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Ft. Worth. Pallbearers were
Keith Martin, Karoll Martin, Joel Martin, Donald Martin, Elmer Edney Jr., and
Allen Martin. Mrs. Malone died Monday, July 12, in Balch Springs Nursing Home.
She was born in Rains County on March 23, 1914, to Henry L.
and Mellie Taylor Martin. She was married in Rains County to Speed R. Malone.
They were married for 36 years. She was a home-health care giver and member
of the Assembly of God church. She is survived by a brother, Luther Martin of
Crowley; sisters, Emma D. Martin of San Angelo, Violet Vernon of Plainview,
Lillian Windham of Balch Springs, Lola B. Cherry of Elgin, Okla., and Christene
Martin of North Richland Hills; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded
in death by her parents; and two sisters, Rosie Lee Nance and Ola Mae Walker.

John L. Bone
1922-2004
Funeral services for John L. Bone, 82, of Canton were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday,
July 29, at Eubank Funeral Home Chapel, Canton, with Bro. Larry Page officiating.
Burial was in Haven of Memories in Canton. Mr. Bone died Monday, July 26, in
Tyler after a long illness. He was born Feb. 13, 1922, in the County
Line community in Rains County to Bascom Ramon and Zula Viola Pippin
Bone. He married LaVerne Barnes in 1945. He served in the Army Air Corps in
WW II. He was a fireman and retired from the Dallas Fire Dept. He was affiliated
with the church of Christ. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, LaVerne,
of Canton; daughter, Donna Kay Cooper of Mabank; sisters, Rama Kelso of Dallas
and Irene Smith of Emory. He was preceded in death by brothers, Elvis Bone and
Loy Bone; sister, Jennie Moses. Eubank Funeral Home of Canton was in charge
