Cemeteries, although many are neglected and overgrown,
they are records of Rains County and America's past; they are rich sources
of vital statistics as well as revealing a great deal about the lives and
deaths of our ancestors.
Cemetery Law
Bishop Cemetery
From
the town of Emory, go 2.9 miles on Hwy. 19S to FM 2324W. Turn right and go
0.7 miles to the driveway of the home on the right side of the road. The cemetery
is in the woods just past the yard. George Washington Bishop had 7 wives &
15 children, some of who are buried in this cemetery, The cemetery is located
on the land he owned & lived on.
Bois d'Arc Cemetery This cemetery has not been located but is known to have existed close to Lake Tawakoni.
Burke-Yandell Cemetery A very badly deterioriated cemetery on the east side of the county. The cemetery is fenced & has several stones that are evidently marking graves. However, there are only 2 tombstones that are readable and one that is so badly weather-worn that it is only partially readable.
Campbell Cemetery A small fenced area with only 1 unusual marker in it. Located on and visible from the Willow Springs Road (FM 3274). The cemetery is fenced and covers an area about 10' x 8'. There is what appears to be a birdbath inside the fenced area; attached to the birdbath is a heart-shaped object with the date 09-19-1968 carved on it.

Clark Cemetery
Located
within the fenced boundaries of the Cam Dowell Ranch between Point and
Lone Oak.
Clewis Cemetery
From the intersection of Hwy. 19 & 69, take Hwy 19S for 0.5 mile to FM
3274S (Willow Springs Rd.); turn left onto FM 3274. Go 4.2 miles to RSCR 2300.
Turn right onto RSCR 2300 and enter the main entrance gate to Greene Ranch.
The cemetery is on a hill after you pass the buildings on the ranch.

Church of Christ Cemetery
Located close to Alba.
Danley Cemetery Located in a grove of trees with only 2 smooth rock markers that appear to be a headstone and a footstone for a grave.
Deaton Cemetery Located on the very edge of the Rains/Hopkins Co. line. It is a public cemetery although it is in a privately owned pasture. The main road to the cemetery is off of Hwy. 19N and in Hopkins Co.
Dement Cemetery
Located 2.5 miles northeast of Point.
Ira Bradford Dement, Sr. is buried in the cemetery along with many slaves.
Dougherty Cemetery
"Partial"
Located 4 mi. north of Emory on FM 275, then east on CR 4320. (Often spelled
Daugherty).

City Cemetery
Located in Emory.
Fitzgerald Cemetery
Family plot consisting of 3 graves, located just outside and at the back of
the Emory City Cemetery.
Forbis Cemetery
Travel north on Ravine St. to Forbis Rd.; turn east. The cemetery is located
0.5 mile from the intersection, on the north side of the road.
Greene Cemetery Located on the Greene Ranch off of the Willow Springs Rd.
Henry Ivey Cemetery - Henry IVY, reportedly, was a slave who was freed prior to the Civil War and who accumulated land and wealth in Rains Co., TX.
Hooker Cemetery
"Partial" Located 1/4 mile from the Hunt Co., TX line. Referred to
as Hooker Ridge Cemetery by locals.
Hopewell Cemetery Located
next to Emory City Cemetery.
Lake Fork Baptist Memorial Cemetery - Established in 2003.
Lone Star Cemetery
Take Hwy 69 to CR4525 cemetery is 1 mile NW
of Point.
Lynch Cemetery
"Partial" From
Emory, starting at the blinking light at 69 & 276: Go West
on 276, exactly 9 miles, headed toward Tawakoni.
Lynch Cemetery is on the Left side of 276.
McBride Cemetery No longer exists. Graves were moved to Bright Star Cemetery in Van Zandt County when Lake Tawakoni was built. Someone sent info on this cemetery - have lost it. Please Contact Me!!!!!!
Magee/McCord Cemetery
This cemetery is located in the Bright Star community on
the east side of the county. The cemetery originated when a family that had
been traveling through the community had a death in the family; they could
not bury the family member at Pilgrim Rest Cemetery because of the rainy winter.
Eli MAGEE allowed the family to bury their loved one on his property.
After others in the community &
members of the MAGEE family were buried there, Eli MAGEE deeded the land for
cemetery use. Since the cemetery adjoins the McCORD land, who were cousins
to the MAGEEs, the cemetery has sometimes been referred to as the McCord Cemetery.
In 1980 there were reportedly approximately 100 graves in the cemetery along
with unmarked graves for slaves.

is a small private family cemetery.
Parks Cemetery
This
small family cemetery is located on private property at the northern edge
of Rains County. From the intersection of Hwy. 69S and Spur 161N at
Point, travel north for 0.4 mile to FM 514. Turn east and travel on 514E for
3 miles to Rains County Road 4470. Turn north on Rains County Road 4470; travel
0.5 mile to curve in the road; turn west onto Rains County Road 4460; travel
0.6 mile to Rains County Road 4480, which is a gravel road. Turn east and
travel 0.6 mile to gate that
enters private property. Travel through the gate on a dirt road for 0.4 mile
to a 2nd gate. The road then becomes a dirt path. Travel 0.5 mile on the dirt
path; the cemetery is located in the wooded area to thenortheast of the path
and is enclosed in a chain link fence.

Rest Cemetery #1
From Emory – take US 69 SE for .9 mi., left on FM 2795 for approx 2.6
mi. take a left on FM 2946, cemetery is about 1.25 miles on your right. From
Tyler/Mineola – take US 69 NW to Rains Co. line. Proceed 1.6 mi. and
take a right on FM 2795. Proceed 3.5 mi. to 2946 and take a right. Cemetery is
about 1.25 miles on the right.
Pippin and Hill Cemetery Located in northern Hopkins Co-- just over the Rains Co line. Near the County Line Community. Linked from Hopkins Co site.

Cemetery
(Also known as Sand Flat Cemetery) From the intersection of Hwy. 19 and Hwy.
69 at Emory, travel Highway 19N for 0.5 mile to F.M. 275. Turn west on F.M.
275. Travel 1.8 miles to the Prairie Grove Baptist Church and cemetery, on
the south side of the road. This is one of four African-American Cemeteries
in Rains Co. TX

Cemetery From
the intersection of Highway 19 and Highway 69, proceed north on Highway 69
for 3.1 miles to County Road 1235, turn left. Proceed .2 mile to County Road
1230,turn left. Proceed .2 mile and the cemetery is on the right.
Richland-Benton Hill Cemetery "Partial" Located in the Black community known as Richland. Could use a reading for this cemetery.
Robertson-Henrys Chapel Cemetery: See Henry's Chapel
Rocky Point Cemetery From the intersection of Hwy. 69 & 19, take Hwy 19S 2.3 miles to RSCR 1156; turn right onto country road. Cemetery is on the left side of the county road, just behind the Rocky Point Community Center. There are marked graves in diagonally opposite corners of the cemetery.
Ryan Cemetery Located on private property; consists of 4 graves.
Shooks Cemetery Located on the very edge of Lake Tawakoni
Simpkins Cemetery
"Partial" Located on the edge of Rains Co.; the road to the cemetery
is off of Hwy. 69S in Alba, Wood Co., TX
Slatter Cemetery
This
is a family cemetery located in the eastern part of the county, on the very
edge of Lake Fork. 1 ac. of land was donated in 1912 by J.E. and
Maggie BROOKS after several graves were already on the land. A small
oil well is on the property. Many SLATTERS and SELLS are buried in this
small cemetery.
Smyrna

The original cemetery
was located on the MOTES place, along with the church. The cemetery
has been extended south and west. Take SH 19 about 3 mi. to FM 2324,
go west about 2.5 mi.to Cemetery Rd.

Worcester-Cooper Cemetery From the intersection of Hwy. 69 & 19, travel 6.5 miles to 4th St. at Point, Texas; turn right. Go 0.3 mile to Ave. D.; turn right. Go 0.5 miles; road ends at two gates/cattle guards leading into pastures. Go through gate on right; cemetery is to the right about 0.5 mile among trees.
