Message:Dear Mike's Family, I only knew Mike for such a short time, but my memories of Mike will always last in my mind. I will never forget his opening line to me each time in chat "Howdy Marie!, Marie who lives in CA and wishes she was living in Texas", as well as the lunch where he was teased for being the rooster with the flock of hens. But most of all, I will remember how Mike's face lit with pride and joy when he talked about his family, especially his son. Mike was a true son of Texas and liked by all. He will be missed.

Message:I met Mike for the first time at the FGS meeting in Dallas. He was very helpful to me in setting up the GenWeb page for Coke County, TX. I knew nothing about web publishing but he was kind and patient and very helpful. I am so glad that I got to meet him in person and I feel very flattered that the picture on this page is of Mike and me. One of his last acts was to affirm me at the new County Coordinator for Smith County, Texas. He was trying to help me get on Rootsweb when he sent me an e-mail on Monday evening at 6:09. Even though I knew him but a short time I felt he was my friend and mentor. Nancy I was looking forward to meeting you when Mike was to come in November for the East Texas Genealogical Meeting. I hope we will have another opportunity to meet. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. Mike's loss to the Internet Genealogy Community is great but I know yours is even greater. Location: San Antonio, TX
E-mail: [email protected]
Message:It is a bit ironic, Mike passed away on the first anniversary of my launching the county I chose to sponser with TXGenWeb. I never met Mike in person, but felt I knew him through our on-line contact and the interaction as he worked at developing TXGenWeb. This thing is as much his as it is anybody's as I don't believe it would be what it is without his direction. I believe Mike has left a great legacy that his family and friends can be proud of. I had hoped to meet Mike personally last month when he spoke in Hillsboro, but a death in my own family occured the same weekend. My condolences go out to his family.

We have truly lost a great friend and leader. I personally have lost a cousin (5th) that I never got to meet face to face. I have been the Runnels County sponsor for just a few weeks but I have felt like part of the family, and it was mostly Mike's doing. Location: Hamden, CT
E-mail: [email protected]
Message:I was at first surprised to feel such a strong personal loss for someone whom I've never met, only communicated with in a few brief personal email messages and a couple of months of postings related to TXGenWeb. Mike was a great leader, making me feel at home and immediately active as part of TXGenWeb, encouraging innovation and excellence and creating a feeling of community. Some have questioned whether this is possible in an electronically linked community in which no face-to-face contact is made, but Mike proved this is indeed more than merely possible. Mike's guidance, ideas, comments, commitment, leadership and humor will be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family and those who knew him best. - NJZ (Karnes County Coord.)

I have had the pleasure of corresponding with Mike, often starting with : "you are the only one with more counties than me, and I would like to know how you do this !" :) Of course, he always answered kindly and positively. I truly admired his page, and how well organized and helpful it was. Mike was so kind as to forward me many positive comments he heard about Georgia GenWeb at the convention in Dallas, and I greatly appreciated it. His loss will be felt in USGenWeb. Location: Hamilton, X
E-mail: [email protected]
Message:Many of those who signed this guestbook have emphasized how much help Mike was in helping them learn how to put up a website. Let me add my name to theirs. Any time I asked for help he acted as if my questions were not as silly as I sometimes thought they were. My wife and I were fortunate in that we were able to have him in our home for 2-3 hours when he came to Hamilton in June for our genealogy meeting. Not only did he help me with GenWeb related problems, he also helped my daughter on somethings totally unrelated to GenWeb. We offer up our prayers that God will be a source of strength and peace to the family during the difficult times ahead.

Message:Mike Basham was an inspiration to me and was helpful in my efforts to bring genealogy to radio in Texas; and helped spread the word about it. Always friendly, always there to help others. He was invited as a guest on the radio program one night but couldn't make it, and was about to be re-scheduled at the time I heard about his passing. A missed opportunity, but he's still there in my heart and memories. God bless.

Message:My husband and I sat and ate dinner at the same table with you and Mike at the Old City Park the last day of the FGS conference. We were shocked and saddened to hear about Mike. Words are inadequate especially since we don't know you very well, but we do want you to know that Mike has made a difference in our lives with his talents. I shall ever be grateful to him for his efforts in helping us to use the computer for our genealogy work. We believe that a loving Heavenly Father placed us here on earth in families where we could learn about Him and His Son's love for us. We also believe that families can be together forever according to His plan for us. We hope and pray that our Father in Heaven will wrap his loving arms around your family and keep you comforted when you need it. Sincerely, Katie and Reid Madsen

I am also grateful to Mike's brother, Dwaine, for maintaining Mike's internet home page in his memory.
